Updated: Is Arnold Schwarzenegger going to work with James Cameron again as the villain for Avatar 2?

09.18.2013

Update: 20th Century Fox has told THR that Schwarzenegger's involvement with AVATAR 2 is not true. Maybe things could change or perhaps Fox just wants to keep things quiet for now, but at this point the actor is not attached to the film.

Original: It's been almost 20 years since the last movie directed by James Cameron featured Arnold Schwarzenegger, but it looks like the two of them may be reuniting in a big way. According to Latino-Review, Schwarzenegger will be playing a villainous general for Cameron in AVATAR 2. It was recently announced that the AVATAR series will be a quadrilogy, but it's not clear if Arnold Schwarzenegger would be playing the villain in just the sequel or all three of the upcoming films.

If true, this is a huge deal. THE TERMINATOR launched James Cameron's career and helped establish Arnold Schwarzenegger as a movie star, so it almost feels like a circle is being completed by having Schwarzenegger joining AVATAR, especially as a villain. Of course there's a chance the report is complete bullshit, but this rumor sounds fairly legit.

I thought on a technical level the first AVATAR was very good, but in my opinion there are a lot of flaws with the film. Arnold Schwarzenegger being in the sequel doesn't mean all the problems from the first will be fixed, however it does mean I'm very interested in the sequel now, and I'm positive that I am not the only one.

ABADAH 2 AVATAR 2 is scheduled to be in theaters December 2016. The third and fourth films will be released in 2017 and 2018.

Extra Tidbit: I hope Arnold Schwarzenegger's villain has a little more depth to him in AVATAR 2 than Stephen Lang's character did in the first film. Great actor, but it was a very one-dimensional character.

Call it Avatar: the schwarzenegger chronicles

I hope it is true, cameron brings out the best in arnold, he knows excactly how to make him rise above himself.
Altough i really dont understand why cameron isnt using michael biehn more in his movies, has something happened between them because he did play in quit a few movies of him.
Anyway, my real dream would be if cameron eventually did make a real sequel to aliens with the return of hicks, ripley and newt, would be even better if arnold gets a role in that too, that means he he has been

I want him too be in it. Does anyone feel that studios leak these stories as feelers to see how people react to it. Then if positive they move forward with it. Except sometime obviously (Ben Affleck) they don't use this method.

Sometimes. And sometimes I get the feeling some fan thinks "What would be really cool is if James Cameron reunites with Arnold Schwarzenegger for the next Avatar movie," and they just run with it. I mean, I'd really like it if this actually happened, but it also feels a little too good to be true.

for some reason when I saw the title of this article I thought it was saying Arnold would be playing a villian in True Lies 2, which would be very interesting but would probably never happen. This is however really cool news, and it makes since that he would play a commander of the military.

This is very cool.....however Arnold has his limits as a villain

After Arnold played the awesome villain in The Terminator he made it well known he would not play a villain of that cruelty again. This was true. Then he played the villain Mr. Freeze in the dreadful Batman and Robin. Not only did he not kill anyone, he was also redeemed in the end. He started off as a great villain in The Terminator, but his limits made him a joke in Batman and Robin. If Arnold wants to once again play a villain for James Cameron, he needs to lift his limitations as a villain.

If this rumor is true, I'm sure he will be a more threatening, and more complex character than Quaritch. He'll likely play another military man, but maybe infuse a bit of Dutch in the role. Make him a man of principle with keen insight into the Na'vi. I think Cameron did a disservice to the audience when he made the Marines such a hateful bunch. He wrote them to be men driven by service, but by making them all a bunch of mercenaries made them easy fodder. If we get a Marine who also appears

If we get a Marine who also appears like a full himan being (even if he looks like Arnold Schwarzenegger) then that could make a more interesting movie.

I kind of still want to see Jake Sully tried for treason. Just a little bit.

Look at all the liars saying they would skip it unless Arnie were cast.

I stand by my theory that Avatar haters are more excited to buy their tickets to the sequels than anyone else. Never seen so much venom spit at a film as this one....

I usually think that about any big franchise (like all the people up in arms about the TMNT movie who will stil go see it opening weekend). I don't think Avatar 2 will have nearly the same pull that the first one had, unless Cameron works extra hard to make it a good movie AND a crowd-pleaser. The fact that Avatar is, in essence, an original property, does give it a slight edge with regard to myself, since I won't be rolling my eyes and waiting for a reboot in five-to-ten years like I would

But at the same time, Cameron's got to have an ace up his sleeve in the marketing department to get me back in the theater after being somewhat underwhelmed by the first movie. Usually I'm just trying to get my Oscar-hopefuls seen that last week between Christmas and New Year's. And I can always ask my sister, since her daughter freaking LOVES Avatar.

They need someone larger than life to fill the shoes left by Stephen Lang. Can't think of someone better than Arnold, really. I hope he gets to tell a Na'vi "you are one ugly motherf**ker."

Considering they'll be aiming for a PG-13, and because that wasn't one of Cameron's lines, not very likely.

While I wasn't a huge fan of the theatrical†version of Avatar, I did like the extended collector's edition better. However, any way you slice it, it's still pretty much just a high dollar Fern Gully. I have to admit though, the visual effects we're amazing, but effects don't make a crappy script better. So as of now I'm mildly interested in the 1st sequel. I won't know if I'll even give a shite about parts 3 & 4 until after I see 2. As far as Arnold goes, I kind of like the notion of him

As far as Arnold goes, I kind of like the notion of him teaming up with Cameron again, but I honestly can't get behind him being the villain if he's just playing a character similar to Lang's from part 1. Of all of the problems the original had, Lang's character was the biggest for me.

"I thought on a technical level the first AVATAR was very good, but in my opinion there are a lot of flaws with the film."

I think anybody who puts in even the slightest effort can find flaws in just about any film. That being said, the above quote personally sums up my feelings as well. Avatar is highly impressive technically, but from a narrative/character standpoint it really disappointed me and I didn't feel it had much new to say (which doubly disappointed me since it was a James Cameron film). Even so, I will be giving the sequels a shot and if this rumor proves to be true it will be some of the coolest

Arny will be playing the Terminator sent to Pandora to kill John Connor who unbeknownst to us in the last movie was on his way to Pandora in cryosleep to try to escape.

I'd watch that movie in a heartbeat, just for its sheer ridiculousness. But apparently some thought it was in poor taste.

I love Armold, but is he just playing the Stephen Lang role from the first one? Man, is Cameron even trying anymore?

Cameron's a moron.....

I couldn't care less who he gets to play the "villain," if he continues to write idiotic stories about painfully moronic stereotypes, the films are going to have diminishing returns. The first one was idiotic, but people went because the technology was new and cool. Now that we've seen it, if he can't write any better than Dances With Pocahontas, people aren't going to care. There's plenty of big screen eye candy that actually has a plot......

The Dark Knight Rises shamelessly ripped off The World is Not Enough, ripped it off plot point for plot point, and used the exact same twists (it was basically a remake). Where is the complaining against Nolan? Oh yeah, Cameron is king of the box office, and trolls hate that kind of success more than anything.

Great success breeds great contempt. Trololololol

That's odd, considering that the script received great reviews back when Avatar was considered a dead unproduced project. Its script even received a glowing review in the book "The Greatest Unproduced Screenplays". When the movie finally came out it got a lot of love from critics. Then after it started breaking records & winning awards, it suddenly had a bad script. Funny how that works.

Gotta admit, this would pique my interest in the sequel to have Arnie on board. I'm with you on developing the villain. I've said many times Stephen Lang was my favorite character from the first one, but he was still a hopelessly two-dimensional character. Considering he was a colonel, it would make sense there'd be at least one general out there he might've been in contact with.

And don't get me wrong, I loved Avatar, I just couldn't think of any reason for why we needed a sequel. With Arnold on board as a villain in a Cameron movie, I don't need a fucking reason! I'm seeing this bitch!
