Is David Goyer being eyed to direct Justice League for WB?

Apr. 17, 2013by: Niki Stephens

AMC's John Campea heard some interesting gossip today concerning JUSTICE LEAGUE:

Hrmmmm...

While I don't mind if Goyer writes, I do mind if he directs. He has yet to show that he is ready to helm something as big as an ensemble superhero film like JUSTICE LEAGUE. That's not me being rude, that's me being realistic. I think MAN OF STEEL will be a step in the right direction for DC comic films since Batman seems to be the only good thing they were turning out. Then again, this is JUST a rumor. So no need to get out the pitchforks at this time.

i wish john hughes was still around to write the justice league movie

because he'd get it. i mean, the justice league is basically your breakfast club high school cliques.

Superman is the class president/boy scout/goodie two shoes
Green Lantern is the cocky jock/troublemaker
Wonder Woman is the cheerleader who doesn't fit in with the other cheerleaders
Batman is the troubled dark emo kid who hangs out by himself
Flash is the witty nerd who gets picked on by the jocks
Martian Manhunter is the foreign exchange student

David Goyer sucks. His pedigree looks better because of the other, more talented people he worked with.

I agree entirely. Everything he's done that has been good has has much more talented people attached to it. Everything he's done on his own has sucked. That should tell you pretty clearly what his talent level is. He just caught a very lucky in being able to work with Christopher Nolan early on and has been able to milk the benefits of that relationship out for the better part of a decade now.

Bad idea. If Man of Steel is good, then let Zack Snyder have the directing job.

I really don't want him directing. I also don't want him handling the script alone. The guy has nice ideas and nice stories, but alone his execution is poor.

he reminds me of George Lucas. They both have great ideas, but they need people to tell them what's stupid and what won't work.

Not no, but FUCK NO!

Goyer is barely a competent writer as it is, and he only writes good stuff when he has a great director looking over his shoulder. But every solo gig he has done has been complete and utter shit. Blade III, The Invisible, & The Unborn range from horrible to forgettable crap.

Nope Nope Nope.....

David S. Goyer is decent enough writer. Granted, I'm a huge fan of Blade 1 and 2, it was the directors' stylistic vision and Wesley Snipes delivery of Goyer's work that made them gold. However, the franchise tarnished in his directorial hands and never recovered. Haven't seen his other films, which I've heard suck.

As far as the Dark Knight trilogy is concerned, I don't mean to shit on the guy but I feel Jonathan Nolan may have done some heavy lifting under Chris Nolan's supervision. I feel

I feel it due to the level of quality maintained in Person of Interest. Goyer may have good dialogue, but is not a very good storyteller.
And as a director, fuck you.

Writing good, directing bad

I am more than okay with him writing. He has good story ideas but he needs help executing them. I definitely don't want him directing though. There are certainly better choices.

dont get me wrong, hes a fantastic writer but dont let him direct please, look at the blade franchise; two awesomes comic book genre films then number three he directed and it was god awful. The man is no Joss Whedon.

Please Dont!

I respect him as a writter, he did a fine job writting THE DARK KNIGHT TRILOGY, But as a Director he has just directed lame movies like: Blade Trinity and The invisible...and that other one Unborn wich only memorable thing about it was that poster with the butt of Odette Anabelle.. he is an ok writter but not a very good director.. just saying.

He only co-wrote Begins, and did not have writing credit for the sequels. Only Story By (aka, "idea by") credit.

Give it to Bruce Timm. The guy has more than proved him self a great storyteller, and he knows DC better than anyone. He should be DC's Joss Whedon.

Goyer is great at getting the ball-rolling and keeping other filmmakers in the realm of the spirit of the source material. I have no faith in him taking the project and running it.

Well...

This could only be true if they already have an idea for a sequel to Man of Steel and there was no way that Zack Snyder could do both. Wasn't there a rumour at one point that Johnathon Nolan would be directing with David Goyer writing?

Uh, yeah about 20 of them...

Alfonso Cuaron
David Yates
Gore Verbinski
Rian Johnson
Duncan Jones
Neil Blomkamp
Drew Goddard
Matt Reeves
Bennett Miller
Joe Wright
Tomas Alfredson
Jeff Nichols
Sam Mendes
Juan Antonio Bayona
Billy Ray
Rupert Wyatt
Joseph Kosinski
Robert Zemeckis
Neil Burger
Frank Darabont
Scott Frank

And that's not even touching the list of obvious dream choice contenders like Guillermo Del Toro, Christopher Nolan, Peter Jackson, James Cameron or Ridley

His name was being bandied about a couple of months back and while I don't know if he'd necessarily be the right fit for this project, I most certainly would not call him underwhelming.

not to take anything away from Affleck, he is a very good director, but most fan boys were none too happy with his name thrown out there, which is why i went with underwhelming, doesnt mean hes bad just nothing for people to be exctied about, love the list Nolan has always been my top choice, but its too bad he doesnt seem to have any interest in doing it, Snyder should get a shot at it since it looks like hes about to hit a home run with Man of Steel, Del Toro is another great choice but

A guy like James Cameron scares me because he seems like a guy who would want to put his own vision into the movie rather than sticking to what makes them great (much like the JJ Abrams Superman Fly By. or Tim Burtons Superman Lives, or even the god awful Joel Schumacher batman movies) I almost want to give a guy like Bruce Timm a shot, hes someone who understands these characters and knows what makes them great, sure he doesnt have a lot of experience directing, but maybe getting him onboard to direct The Flash movie first and try it out and go from there

Are WB secretly putting the people behind the DC animated efforts of the last 20-25 years behind their Justice League movie with say...Nolan and his usual associates in charge of it all? It has to be a secret ...coz it's the only reason I can think of why it appears to not actually be so at this moment in time. Seriously ...how hard is it to come to the realisation that you put the tried and tested people behind a brand you hope can rival (or better) what Marvel is doing? Man Of Steel looks

Man Of Steel looks like it's going to be awesome and whilst they missed a trick by not linking Bale's Batman with this universe ...all is not lost on a supposed reboot of Batman to fit in to this universe ...so long as the right people are put in place. I’d even stick with the crapfest that was Green Lantern as I like Reynolds so much and with the origin out of the way he can be put in a better Green Lantern movie with the tried and tested people looking after it who then don’t have to worry about an origin story.

I don't think he would do a very good job.

My personal picks would be Zack Synder, Ben Affleck, Christopher Nolan, The Wachowskis Brothers, Duncan Jones, or Neill Blomkamp.

Misinformed

The writer of this article is either misinformed or just being plain malicious. 1st - Goyer would never be given full directorial control ala Kubrick. He'll be guided and take counsel with some of the best (Nolans, Snyders, Zimmer, Pfister, etc). So, I don't really care if the writer "minds" that Goyer directs. 2nd - IF this rumour is true, IF, then why not? Who knows this universe better and has brought it to the screen with more success than Goyer? (Have you seen the latest Man of Steel

What success? He only co-wrote Batman Begins, not the Dark Knight or The Dark Knight Rises. So he has one good movie (that he had help on) and a trailer (which primarily shows the visuals, not the story.) Never mind that trailers can easily be misleading.

Here are a few more of Goyers "successes": Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, The Unborn, Blade: Trinity, Jumper, The Invisible. Goyer is a shitty writer and director.

I think if WB really wants to make this happen and make it work, they need to wait till they have an increbile Man of Steel trilogy. After that arrange it with Chris Nolan producing/co-writing & Goyer coming up with the story with Bruce Timm directing. Oh and Jonathan Nolan c-writing with Goyer. That would get crazy buzz.

No WAY!!!

There is no way they should ever hire him to direct their big team up movie that everything hinges on. I can't believe they would even consider it, he as almost no experience, only three movies! They really should just learn from Marvel's mistakes...just look at The Avengers, they hired a one time director and we all saw how much of a clusterfuck that was. They should hire Drew Goddard.
