Is Julianne Moore preparing to enter The Hunger Games?

06.27.2013by:

Deadline is reporting that Julianne Moore is being eyed for a big role in THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY (Parts 1 & 2), which will serve as the finale of the series. Moore would play President Alma Coin, "a manipulative politician who figures brightly in the finale as Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) becomes a symbol of rebellion against the autocratic Capitol government."

Director Francis Lawrence is still in the process of finishing up THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE for its release this fall, as well as readying the full trailer to debut at Comic Con, but apparently Lionsgate is keeping their eye on the franchise prize, making sure that THE HUNGER GAMES flow continues.

Here's a rundown on Alma Coin:

President Alma Coin was the President of District 13 and the leader of the rebellion against the Capitol by the people of the districts of Panem. She is the secondary antagonist of Mockingjay, after Snow and the Capitol. She was first introduced when Katniss Everdeen met her in District 13.

Thus far, THE HUNGER GAMES has rallied some massively talented actors to its stable, which is something that didn't happen for the TWILIGHT franchise, of which it's often compared. With Jennifer Lawrence's stock already up to its peak and a bevy of awesome co-stars like Philip Seymour Hoffman, Donald Sutherland, Woody Harrelson, Toby Jones, and Stanley Tucci, THE HUNGER GAMES franchise has shot well above the typecasts usually associated with YA books.

THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE is set for release on November 22, 2013, with THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY - PART 1 set for November 21, 2014 and THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY - PART 2 finishing up on November 20, 2015.

I think she'd be great at it, Moore is brilliant with these types of characters and I'm sure she'll be able to fit into the heightened world of the Capitol just right.

She doesn't seem quite the type for this type of role but then again the lure of money can make many actors go for any role even the more naughtier ones. Im sure Moore is very well aware of that as she has done those type of roles before. That reminds me I need to watch boogey nights again some time. hmm

It's great casting, IMO

Alma Coin, as others have mentioned, is a manipulative bitch and it's a great role for Moore. As for MOCKINGJAY, it's probably the weakest in the series; I suspect Suzanne Collins was under some extremely tight deadlines so it wasn't as good as it could have been.

Excellent Casting

I've read the books and Coin is one hell of a manipulative bitch. I hope Moore sinks her teeth into this role as it is perfectly tailored for her. The 3rd book got weird as shit for me and took me a lot longer to finish whereas I couldn't put down CATCHING FIRE. I can only hope that Francis Lawrence delivers in spades on MOCKINGJAY.

Could be very good casting but she probably won't appear until the 3rd movie.

I liked the first 2 books & thought the first movie was a solid adaptation.Catching Fire was the best book in the trilogy so I have very high hopes for the movie. I could not even finish the third book, it just got too political & strayed way too far from the concept. I am very curious to know how it will translate to the big screen.

I didn't "hate" the third book, but honestly out of probably the 30+ people I know who've read it, I don't know of a single one that didn't think it was the weakest in the series. There are parts of the book that read more like a Resident Evil video game than anything else, and at first you'd think that Hunger Games + Resident Evil would make for a pretty cool combination, and in theory I'm sure that it could, but not the way that Suzanne Collins writes it...

As for Alma Coin, I guess

As for Alma Coin, I guess because of her name I just always pictured her being latina, so I thought someone like Carla Gugino would be perfect for the role, but Moore would do just fine.

Well in the novel she's described as an older white lady around 50 with gray hair and silver eyes. I say again Helen Mirren is perfect

It says she had gray hair and silver eyes, but it doesn't specify her ethnicity.

I'm not sure if this is a good choice or not. In reading Mockingjay (the worst of the three, btw) I pictured Alma Coin being around the same age as President Snow. Perhaps a few years younger, but certainly not hald his age.

That being said, no problem at all with Julianne Moore joining the cast. I have no issue with throwing my vision out the window if it means this franchise continues to get Moore talent (see what I did there?)

great choice

I thought the third book sucked, but i love me some Julianne Moore and she is a great choice for the character.

Also, isn't calling her an antagonist a bit of a spoiler?

it wasn't really the writing of the third book that got to me, it was the main character. Half the time she spends the book moping and depressed about the whole situation. I get that a real 16-year-old girl would get that way when put in that situation, but it just makes for a really boring read and i lost interest in the main character really fast.

The Coin character however was fairly unique. The way the book is written, you never really trust any authority figure from the get-go.

Great choice or...

I think Helen Mirren would be great physically and has the acting chops to pull of the cold character that Alma Coin is

Good casting. I have never really disliked Moore in a role that she has done except for her role has Clarice in Hannibal. Even then she wasn't bad, she just wasn't Jodie Foster/
