Is Knight and Day causing a shakeup of Mission Impossible 4?

Jul. 13, 2010by: Paul Tassi

With KNIGHT AND DAY performing beneath expectations, questions have been raised about Tom Cruise's ability to be able to still draw a crowd after all these years. The man hasn’t had a hit in quite some time, and now that might affect his next project, MISSION IMPOSSIBLE IV.

Brad Bird is helming and JJ Abrams is producing, but the question is now how prominent Cruise should be in the film. Deadline reports that the script is good, but it might be rewritten so Cruise is now mentoring a young operative rather than taking on center stage all by himself.

Personally, I don’t buy it. I don’t think Cruise has lost his magic at all, he’s just chosen the wrong projects for a while now. VALKYRIE was something of a trainwreck, but that had A) an ending everyone already knew (Hitler doesn't die!) and B) Cruise trying to be a convincing German while speaking full–on American English.

I hated KNIGHT AND DAY, but it wasn’t because of Cruise at all. Rather, the problem was with the script who was written by this guy. Who is that guy? I have no goddamn idea, which is kind of an issue when you have that much talent attached to a project.

I’m actually looking forward to MI:4, and I think between Bird, Abrams and Cruise, it will be a return to form for the actor at last.

Extra Tidbit: If you think Cruise has lost his star power, imagine trying to pitch another LETHAL WEAPON movie right now

I just saw "Knight And Day" and was very impressed. I think it's failing because it's one of the most confoundingly stupid titles ever, and it has terrible timing- looking like a cross between "Salt" and "The Killers" probably made people quite disinterested.

I'm not a huge Cruise fan or a hater, but they should consider bringing in some new talent in some form to continue the franchise similar to the way they do Bond and since Bond is in trouble now it would be nice to see MI be something of a long term franchise. I gotta go with MI:2 as the best, but I'm a huge Woo fan. Either that or do a new Flint series.

Valkyrie was actually quite good and underrated, and whilst it's fine to blast someone for turning out a poor script, you shouldn't do it just because they're a first timer - people should take risks, how does new talent get out otherwise?

Cruise is a great actor, and he generally brings a certain amount of charisma and bravado to each scene he plays, that I find him facilitating each film he does, as opposed to taking away from the experience.

With that said, the idea of taking him away from the focal point of mission impossible is retarded and unecessary. Kick up the budget, get better writers, and cash in some fuckin' success. God it's like hollywood forgot its OWN formula.

Brutal truth? Cruise is done as a movie star. Not necessarily as an actor but he'll never be a major draw for audiences again. MI3 was an established franchise and still didn't make half what the second one did. Everything else since the couch fiasco has been an absolute disaster. I know you'll argue that it's just that he's been picking the wrong projects, but really what's the last good Will Smith movie you've seen? Hancock? Seven Pounds? I Am Legend? What do they have in common besides

Cruise is still awesome, i mean Minority Report and last samurai arent that old and he was fantastic in those. he was really good in war of the worlds, valkyrie and even knight and day its just those films werent great because of him but because of bad directing/scripts.

DONE

I didn't buy Knight and Day, generally Cruise manages to pull of his movies but this one was a disaster as there was no chemistry between the characters . Also the audience doesn't get the whole Cruise power like 10 years ago. Since most of the movies are sold on animation or super heroes I doubt people care about star power.

I believe

I don't think Cruise has lost it. Valkyrie was blah and Knight and Day had Cameron Diaz. No one cares for Cameron Diaz, so there was that. If he does an all out action movie with a good cast and story, he's back, baby!

Tom Cruise is Mission Impossible.

M:I-III is so underrated. I love the original, but 3 is actually my favorite of the series. Tom Cruise owns the role of Ethan Hunt, and imo it would be a huge mistake to take him out of or diminish his role. Even with being released at the height of his worst press, M:I-III was a pretty solid hit. I say bring on 4 with another great villain like Phillip Seymore Hoffman and it will be awesome.

People hated knight & day because all it did was continue this lame ass male spy and female spy are lovers trend that mr. and mrs. smith started. I on the other subject think that mission impossible 4 should happen because part 3 had alot of cool moments like when the helicopter shot at the bridge and Tom flew back into the car or when he ran a whole mile in five minutes.

IMP

Can we at least get back to basics here!! IMP 1 was awesome! The second sucked -- felt like just action flick like any other. three, at least, got it back a bit to basics!! Can Cruise and company look at the series please! IMP is about the crew, and not the individual!

Well German's don't usually spend the whole time speaking in english either. We must ditch some things for an international audience.
I think MI4 just needs a good bad guy. Why not put pitt against cruise and see if that shakes things up. The passing of the torch has never ever been good in a sequel.

This is great!

Dump this movie, send Brad Bird back to Pixar where he can make another animated movie . . . say perhaps, The Incredibles 2?

Valkyrie

If you watch Valkyrie, it actually starts in German and slowly blends into english... similar tactic used in 13th Warrior. And Tom Cruie was selected for that role because he looked just like the real officer.

I enjoyed Knight and Day. I think that alot of people went into K&D wanting an action flick like MI. I went into the movie ready to laugh and laugh I did! I think the trailer mislead alot of people. That brings us back to the misleading Predators trailer. Lets just do away with trailers and wait until the movie comes out!!!!!!

I actually enjoyed Knight and Day. It was a decent action flick. My expectations for it weren't high, which was thankful in a summer that has been full of high expectation films. I don't think Cruise has lost his status as well. I agree, it's only been the projects he's chosen. I think marketing is also another reason for his films doing so poorly. However, Mission Impossible has a built in franchise, and MI III was a great action film. I think MI IV could be a great film for Cruise.

It's Not O'Neal's Fault

Patrick O'Neal should not be blamed for the disaster that was this film's screenplay. This film was an example of too many chefs spoiling the meal, with 8 different screenwriters contributing to this script. Here is the trivia entry on IMDb that explains the situation:

This was originally a spec script written by Patrick O'Neill entitled "All New Enemies", before being retitled "Trouble Man". It was then retitled "Wichita" before finally being called "Knight and Day". The script was then

This was originally a spec script written by Patrick O'Neill entitled "All New Enemies", before being retitled "Trouble Man". It was then retitled "Wichita" before finally being called "Knight and Day". The script was then rewritten by Scott Frank, followed by a draft by Dana Fox; then a draft by Laeta Kalogridis; then a draft by Ted Griffin & Nicholas Griffin; then a set of revisions by Timothy Dowling; and finally some revision work by Simon Kinberg. Director James Mangold also contributed to the script as well in some capacity. Patrick O'Neill remains credited for the film.

There are some very talented writers among that list of people. Scott Frank has written some excellent films (Minority Report, The Lookout, Out of Sight, Get Shorty), and Ted & Nicolas Griffin wrote Matchstick Men, which I enjoy (Ted also wrote Ocean's Eleven). James Mangold has written some good movies and Simon Kinsberg was even involved in some entertaining films (Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Sherlock Holmes). I think too many writers screwed up this screenplay. The final product probably does not even closely resemble what Patrick O'Neal first created. It's not his fault.

Wait, what?

Brad Bird?

As in Incredibles/Iron Giant Brad Bird?

Boy, am I late on that one or what...

But seriously, unlike Mel Gibson (who's career is pretty much over now IMO), I still believe in the drawing power of Tom Cruise. I believe he redeemed himself in the eyes of the public with Tropic Thunder, but that Knight and Day was just badly marketed (I barely heard of it).

Mission Impossible IV, on the other hand, could be his big comeback in terms of box-office revenue. But then again,

I think people forget how good of an actor Tom Cruise is. Just go back and look at his career and tell me that he isn't a great actor.

Cruise is one of my favorite actors and is one of the finest actors of all time. Dude has made so many classic movies and has has so many memorable roles throughout hiw whole career. Knight and Day looked fun, but since it underwhelmed, that doesn't mean Cruise shouldn't have another shot at Mission Impossible. All 3 of the films are great, entertaing movies

What the fuck.

Once again, agreed. Cruise is one of my favourite actors but he wasn't the reason why Knight & Day had to be one of the worst films I've seen all year.

The problems stemmed from the screenplay, which in part Mangold didn't get the action right. Which is strange because Mangold can do action but I could find something wrong with every action sequence in the entire film. It was trying to be Bourne with a hint of Mr. & Mrs Smith and was too sarcastic with its humour.

The point is Cruise

The point is Cruise should have been making M:I-4 instead of K&D in the first place and if K&D's failure will fuck-up the momentum M:I-3 had going into #4, that's some bullshit.

Mission Impossible is a well known series though. I think if they made another with the talent attached to it now would be Cruises biggest blockbuster since MI:3.

I really disliked K&D too... Mostly because of the script and casting of Diaz and Dano (complete misuse of him).

Cruise was amazing in the first 45 minutes but once his character suddenly changed and it turned into a romace and that stupid ending that was just pure scripting luck made the film unwatchable for me again.

Cruise is the man and KNIGHT & DAY was pure fun. If they fuck with the movie just because one movie didn't bring in that much money (mainly because of Diaz and shitty marketing by Fox), they'll regret it.

Cruise lost his magic because celebrities are no longer brand names for movies. The movies are now center stage so they have to completely re-think established franchises by either reworking them or rebooting them in to properties that revolve around plot and visuals rather than its stars.

I agree with your take on "celebrity" in this day but that wouldn't explain how Cruise "lost his magic." Cruise is still a charismatic guy and an extremely talented actor. Will Smith still opens movies huge, even Hancock, because he's Will Smith.
