Is Michael B. Jordan set to flame on for Josh Trank's Fantastic Four reboot?

May. 2, 2013by: Paul Shirey

Casting rumors are "heating up" for Josh Trank's reboot of FANTASTIC FOUR, with the latest rumor coming in that CHRONICLE star Michael B. Jordan could be set to "flame on" as Johnny Storm a.k.a. The Human Torch. The role was previously held by the current Captain America, Chris Evans, and has yet to have a black actor take on the role. The choice to cast a different race will likely ruffle some feathers, but I can see both sides of the argument. The "why" and "why not?" can both be pleaded equally, but in the end I think it comes down to the strength of the actor.

Jordan could potentially join the as-yet-to-be-confirmed Allison Williams, who is also rumored for a role, potentially that of Sue Storm, a.k.a. The Invisible Woman, which would make a bit of a conundrum given that they are brother and sister. Very little is known about what direction Fox or Trank are going with the reboot, but regardless of age, ethnicity, or anything else, I'm not exactly blown away by these choices. There's potential, but they're both way too unproven to get excited about. At this stage in the game, I'm more intrigued by Trank, but he still has to prove that he can capture lightning in a bottle a second time as well.

FANTASTIC FOUR is set for release on March 6, 2015.

Extra Tidbit: When does race matter in terms of casting a character differently than their original incarnation?

Just make Black Panther already

If they're so desperate to have a leading black superhero, just make Black Panther or Luke Cage already! They're great characters and could easily make the transition to the silver screen! Hell they could even reboot Green Lantern with the John Stewart character instead of Hal Jordan. It doesn't help that this decision makes no sense given that the Fantastic Four are a family.

A black actor as Johnny Storm?

That's crazy. Next thing you're gonna tell me is they want to cast Idris Elba as James Bond. Oh wait...

I don't necessarily have a problem with casting Jordan for Human Torch. The only issue is if they keep Allison Williams as Sue Storm, since that obviously wouldn't pass the sniff test of believability. The important thing to remember no matter what changes a studio makes to the source material, it's ultimately your choice to buy the ticket or not. If you don't agree with the casting

Don't see how. Blade's race plays no relevance to his character (Like Johnny Storm). I vote Jason Statham.

You might not see it, but a studio would NEVER cast a white guy in a defined role for a black guy. Like I said, too many people would consider it racist.

Stan Lee and Jack Kirby are obviously racists

Come on people, let's stop pandering to the politically correct brigade and stick to what's white...I mean right. Seriously though, this dudes probably a decent enough actor but I don't see how changing the ethnicity of a character will make for a better movie. Personally I don't care if Sue is Asian, Johnny is African American, Ben is Mexican and Reeds a Native Indian as long as the script is awesome and the movie kicks ass. Ask yourself, what were the times like when most of these characters were created? Then ask yourself, do those times reflect today's society? If you can understand all that I've mentioned above, then you might be a bit more accepting of these changes.

I have no problem with the guy being white or black. I will still see it or not see it, depending on the trailer. However, I do have a problem with the hypocrisy behind people's arguments. I've seen folks defend Goku being white and the characters in Avatar being white, but whenever the race is switched from white to black then suddenly a line is crossed. If you're going to defend one case, then you should have no problem defending each case that comes up.

The problem with this proposal, like others have alluded to, is if you make Johnny black then you have to also make Sue black unless one of the two are adopted or not related at all. I understand wanting a 'mixed cast', but I think The Thing or Reed Richards are better for that type of experimenting.

I say this as a very proud black man and progressive liberal, but I hate character race swaps. Why can't they just show reverence to the source material and leave the characters how they are? I wouldn't want a white guy playing Luke Cage and I don't want a black guy playing the Human Torch. I'm still not and was never really all that okay with Samuel L. Jackson being Nick Fury but at least there's an Ultimate's version of the character that exists in comics.

I was already looking for an excuse not to see this, and I think I just found it.

Okay, so Johnny and Sue aren't going to be blood siblings anymore? Why not just make Ben be Reed's love interest, and show how progressive and hip you are. Jesus Christ, just let Marvel have all their heroes back and give us Secret Wars please.

Nope!
We live in times were racism is almost eliminated, at least in the civilized world. That being said, when casting for characters that have history attached to them, they should be casted based on that history. If you wish to make the character based on a new age comic character i.e Ultimate Spiderman then no problem at all. Getting away from race, fans get upset when actors are casted for a role, and do not portray any characteristics of that character they are casted for. Look how

Get over yourselves nerds.

Let's consider the integrity of these characters for a second and open ourselves up to a different interpretation. These characters are symbols. They are deeply embedded in our culture. I think as long as the character's personality is maintained, you'll be alright. I kind of see superhero movie casting on the same level with Shakespeare casting. To those of you brilliant people that INSIST on going to the Black Panther defense: if there is a director who can make a white African king work, go

Still think the only good thing about the previous two movies was Johnny and Ben's exchanges!

So tired of this....

Guess what? Johnny Blaze is not black, never has been, never should be. Your telling me Sony cant find a white guy who would be perfect for the role? While they're at it why doesn't marvel follow their lead and make the Black Panther a 60 year old Vietnamese women... I have no problem with Sam Jackson's Nick Fury but I still feel that the integrity of these characters, and their race, should be maintained from the creator's original vision.

I say no.

As far as I'm concerned, the race (or sex) of an established character should never change. There is absolutely no reason it should even be happening. If there is a need in Hollywood to change these characters, then do that, change them into something else, but don't tell me this is one character then put something unrelated, other than the name, on the screen. Variations on the theme, fine, but a complete departure (yes, I consider a race or sex change a complete departure), why bother?

Why make the decision to create a live-action version of an established property just to turn around and change the core elements? If there is a need to reflect the current time and state of the world we are living in then create a new character with similar abilities and introduce them into the story. Why take an already established figure and change them? With that change it is no longer the same character.

See we just disagree on what we consider core elements. In some examples the characters race may be core and in others it's not. What I consider core is origin stories, costumes, enemies, and super powers. Things like that.

To be fair I think a person's race and gender are a heck of a lot more essential to their character and core identity than superficial details like their costume, although I get frustrated when they mess around unnecessarily with that too.

Now that I'm older (and want to be in the industry one day) people tend to forget that comic books and movies are two separate mediums, and because they are seperate mediums, the producers and directors can take chances like this and we should really be happy for that. (seriously, how many of you want to change or experiment with existing titles?) We claim that we don't want race to matter yet we get upset over things like this. Like Electro, their race does not matter so who cares if they change it? It's not Black Panther, it's not Captain America, it's freaking Johnny Storm. If they want to go with the adoption aspect, by all means, go for it. I, for one, am really curious and excited to see how Michael and Allison's brother and sister dynamic will work. Thoughts?

It is not impossible to have siblings of different races. What if mom is white dad is black? It does happen so the switch doesn't bother me that much. Then again, I am not a huge F4 fan so I don't mind. If Peter Parker was suddenly changed up it would bother me. The new comic based in the future has a black Spider-man and I am fine with that. I think certain people changing is a bit odd. For some reason Johnny doesn't bother me.
I find it much more amusing that Jesus is a white christian when

Black Panther must be black...

because of the historical significance of him being the first mainstream black superhero and the ramifications it had. Is that not a good enough answer? That's the best reason, and the only one I really need, though more could be provided. He's from an African tribe. Africa, a continent known to have tribes of only black people. It's not Krypton. It would just make sense to have him be black rather than cast a white guy, say he was raised by a tribe in Africa, etc, etc. A character

I would be fine with Reed Richards, Ben Grim or Victor Von Doom being black, those choices could work.

Hmmmmmm....

I totally agree with Tearlis on this one. This just isn't going to work. I thought MKD was brilliant as Kingpin....the best part of that movie. Whats next??? I KNOW...... MARK WAHLBERG SHOULD PLAY THE BLACK PANTHER!!!! That's inspired casting too right?

Im black, and I have to say that casting a black actor as johnny storm isnt something I agree with. Certain characters in the comic word it might work, but this isn't one of them. Don't mind Jamie Foxx being Electro. Didn't mind the late Michael Clarke Duncan as Kingpin, even Heimdall in Thor was acceptable. But not every character can be black. You make Johnny black, then make Sue black.

You don't really explain why you don't think some characters can be black. Why can't this character be black, but those other one's can? If the only hang up is explaining a white sister, then that's as easy as pie. I mean it would be super effortless to write why two siblings would be of different races. Or just make her black, like you said.

I agree. Why go to lengths in the movie to explain that the characters are adopted siblings, which is a departure from the source material? Just make them the same race. I don't think people would mind if Sue and Johnny Storm are both black. It just seems ridiculous to cast him to play the brother of a white girl. Either make them both black or make them both white. I think people just want to have some consistency with the comics if they're going to cast against source material.

I'd say the lengths are minimal and inconsequential in scope of the entire film. A small hurdle and one that might add to more interesting material than what the source has to offer, giving the characters more dimension and conflict. Still though, I'd like to hear why tearlis thinks some characters can have their race switched while others can't.

So Sue will be Black too?

Aren't they brother/sister? You can change spiderman, batman, whoever, but it has to make sense. It can't just be because you can pay some unknown as little as possible. If Johnny is Black why not make the whole team black (except for Thing, he will be purple) and cast the Waynes brothers. That would turn out to be a better movie somehow anyways.

You can't just change a characters race to be different, that's stupid. Nick Fury is different because he's not a superhero and they changed his race in the comics more than 10 years ago. Once you change Johnny, then you have to change Sue and Sue is married to Reed and so on. You might as well make a different movie. People get mad and shout racism, but it's not. Comic readers just want the story to be as accurate as possible. When you read a comic series your whole life and wait for the movie

I would hate to see a white Blade, just like I hated Micheal Clark Duncan as The KingPin. It made no sense. The KingPin has appeared in so many comics besides Daredevil, so he's pretty iconic. So for them to change him from a Big Fat White guy to a Tall Muscled Black guy was off puting. Just my two cents. And if anybody out there thinks that thats a racist train of thought, they're wrong, just ask my son. His middle name is Blade.

Just curious....has anybody realllly raised a stink that Electro's being played by a black actor in the new Spiderman movie? Or when Billy Dee Williams played Harvey Dent? Or Eartha Kitt was Catwoman?

I mean...if you are only getting pissed off when black people are cast as the traditionally white heroes, but not so much the villains, what does that tell you?

Mike Dundee is adamant!

This kid is a good actor. Anyone that watched Friday Night Lights knows that. No problem with him being Jhonny Storm. It would make his being Sue's brother difficult, unless they plan to make her black too, but as an actor for a character this guy would be great.

i think race matters when it's central to the story of the super hero's alter-ego. for example, if steve rogers was black, it wouldn't make sense. i mean captain america can be black as long as its isaiah bradley. but let's be honest... during WWII the "face of america" at all those USO shows wouldn't have been a black guy.

Correct. So long as you are telling the Steve Rogers of WWII (not updating it like how Iron Man traded Vietnam for Afghanistan) I'd say yes, he would have to be white to reflect the reality of that day.

But the movie made smart use of the 'Howling Commandos' by having them originate as this motley crew of POWs on the Italian front. The Italian front being where the legendary segregated Nissei (Japanese-American) and Buffalo Soldier (African-American) units fought the Nazis in real life.

So when Rogers is assembling his team, he has both Jim Morita and Gabe Jones. Far from tokens in story-telling defiance of the times, they are actually smart tributes to the history of WWII blended with the enlightened nature of Steve Rogers' character.

@tarantinodork. i agree and appreciate the way they handled the howling commandos and traded vietnam for afghanistan in iron man. i also agree making little tweaks to the alter-ego's story can work. but they have to be little tweaks. if you took out the WWII aspect of steve rogers... well, you might as well just use a different character altogether. WWII is critical to the steve rogers story, thus if you're casting steve rogers, you need to cast a white guy.

People...no, its NOTHING like making Blade or Black Panther white, and you sound stupid when you say that.

Until Black Panther came along in 1966...every superhero essentially HAD to be white for the comic to get published. Which is why the entire DC catalog looked like the Aryan Race for the first four decades. Hell, when he first published Fantastic Four Stan Lee was breaking massive ground just having Ben Grimm be Jewish. If Siegel and Shuster had had the freedom to creatively do so

There are lots of reasons to cast or not cast people in franchise superhero roles. None of those reasons should include the societal prejudices and injustices of 50 years ago.

There is not now nor has there ever been an outright BAN on white superheroes. This is why you sound stupid.

Prior to Black Panther, that is what existed in the world of comics. To insist all these characters must forever be played by white people because their creators 50-80 years ago were forbidden to draw anything BUT white heroes is to continue propogating that racism. NOTHING in Johnny or Sue Storm's origin demands they be played by white people. Nothing.

Black Panther has to be black because he's BLACK PANTHER. His race, origin is this massive part of his story.

As I said above, Steve Rogers likely does have to be white to reflect the realities of the WWII era. I'll also volunteer Hal Jordan as a white character because of the role his race played in the great Dennis O'Neill comics of the 70s.

Having said that everything can be ripe for subversion. Batman Begins had white & japanese actors playing R'as al Ghul. And if you show me a

But its just silly to equate the two things as you are. Black Panther is black because Stan Lee & his crew had the creative freedom to make the character they pleased. Superman is white Christian because thats the only thing Siegel & Schuster were allowed to publish.

First of all STOP CALLING PEOPLE STUPID!!!! ITS RUDE AND VERY UNCALLED FOR!!! Just because you don't respect other peoples OPINIONS, but still expect them to respect yours, does not make those people STUPID! Second...you cannot have it both ways. I get that Black Panther must be black due to his awesome backstory, but nothing says Blade has to be Black, or Falcon for that matter. But I would be just as PISSED OFF if they cast white actors to play those characters.

Umm, just in response to your comments about Superman. You do know that Superman has a lot of Jewish traits that have been incorporated into his origin to reflect that of a Jewish immigrant post WWII. In many ways, Superman is actually a symbol of an American Jew.
1) Kal-El means "Voice of God" in Hebrew
2) Events in his childhood are similar to that of Moses
3) Kal-El coming to Earth after his homeworld is destroyed is very reminiscient of Jews coming to America after WWII when Europe

4) The character of Superman is a modern day take on the Jewish folk legend of The Golem.

So you're point on superheroes being created to solely reflect White America 50-80 years ago is moot. It just isn't the case. That being said, you haven't really explained TheRealKalEl's question of why it's ok to cast a white character as black, but not ok to cast a black character as white? It would be different if these characters existed as novels, but they were in comics. People have seen a visual representation of this character as white for 50 years. If in a movie you can explain why a white character is now black, why can it not be done to explain why a black character is now white?

Just because Black Panther has black in his name, does not mean he has to be black. Explain it as a white person raised or inducted into the tribe and he overcame being an outsider to gain the Black Panther title and rule the tribe. That sounds just as plausible to explain in Fantastic Four the entire back story to how Sue and Johnny are adoptive brother and sister.

In reading most of the comments, I don't think people really have an issue with casting a black person in the role of white character. It's the idea of changing the relationship in the movie to being adopted siblings. It somehow changes the tone and sanctity of the book. I think people will overall be fine with having a black Sue and Johnny as opposed to a white Sue and a black Johnny and have to sit through a 15 minute segment in the movie to explain their adoptive history.

if sue storm and johny storm are adopted siblings or step siblings, then it could make for some interesting group dynamic. fantastic four is essentially supposed to be the "superhero family" so throwing in that variable (especially when they're multi-racial) kind of modernizes them from the standard "family". they should just go ahead and make the thing homosexual and mr fantastic a devout buddhist to cover all the bases.

I like the actor, but not for this role. The Fantastic Four are a family of superheroes. Always have been, and that's why it works. They're even called 'Marvel's First Family' on the comics themselves. If you make it that Johnny is Sue's adopted brother, you've just added another unnecessary layer to the story that you have to explain. Even though Ben Grimm isn't related by blood or marriage, he and Reed have been portrayed as almost like brothers due to all the history they have together. Ben

I don't understand what Fox is doing with this Fantastic Four reboot. I'm not racist, but in no way do I want to see a black Johnny Storm. The character isn't black, so why make him African American. I can understand Fox wanting to differentiate the new films from the older ones, but this is definitely the wrong way to go. Just cast a white actor and have the character be white like the character is in the comics.

I swear if they go through with casting Williams and Jordan for Sue and

this is starting to get that Fox marvel movie stink on it already, I've already said i dont care about the color, IF both sue and johnny are black (altho if i had my choice id keep the source material) but i can see it now, Johnny is the adopted brother of Sue, they dont go into space instead its an accident in Reeds lab, the Thing can turn his powers on and off like the rest, Dr. Doom is just a doctor not a supervillian and they face off against mole man

I agree with both of you guys 100%. It's a just a bad idea. Like you said, if the suit upsets us fans, then I can only imagine how bad it would be if they changed the race of an established history.

Adam Brody?

Still think Adam Brody would be a good choice as 1) he has shown that he can act (In The Land Of Women) and 2) He can pull off being cocky. But he is 33/34 so maybe the age is too old? i dunno....i am not against a different race. They changed up Kingpin but that I could understand because of the size of the character it made sense they got the late Michael Clarke Duncan.

Too Unproven???

How can you call them too unproven, Jordan was the main student character for the final two seasons of Friday Night Lights AND the emotionally resonant character in the first season of The Wire. He's indisputably more proven than Chris Evans was when he took the same role OR Chris Hemsworth was when cast as Thor.

I agree that they could easily be adopted brother and sister. I just hope they let Williams use her natural hair color as opposed to making her look goofy as a blonde.

And Michael B Jordan is most likely being considered because he is coming out of fest circuits with a really strong performance (Fruitvale Station)

I really only have one rebuttal to people who make the "this didn't happen in the comics" argument: This isn't the comics.

I'm with you. If they go through with this, I will also not go see it. The Human Torch is White. Cast a White actor and stay true to the source material.

Makes no sense if Allison Williams is rumored for Sue Storm. If they cast 2 black actors as the Storms I'd be cool with it.

that would be the way to go if they want to make the switch, something tells me fox wont do that though

I don't mind switching so long as certain things are kept the same. I think it is an odd choice considering this is a brother/sister thing but it is also not impossible either. I may have prefered changing Thing though. Meh. As long as it's good I don't care.

Not trying to sound racist here

buuuut if Sue is white, how is her brother going to be black? unless they are no longer brother and sister? which would lead me to believe they are changing a lot, and it will become another horrible Fox marvel movie, I liked him in Chronicle, and he could even jump into a good Marvel movie and maybe play Black Panther? hes a little young but so was Panther when he took over the mantle so it could work

Have you ever heard of adoption? Plenty of people out there have siblings of a different race, they're just not biological.

yet johnny and sue storm are biological...how many changes do you want made to the movie? either cast them both black or dont, too many changes = pissing off the people you make these movies for, i have more of a problem with them screwing with origins than the race of the character

Adoption. Origins get messed around with all the time. Characters are quantum. Also you sound really racist when you preface a sentence with "not trying to sound racist."

This whole adoption idea makes me think of Different Strokes. It takes Different Strokes to move the world, yes it does.

Who's playing Willis?

So what else is it ok for them to change before its only fantasic four in name? someone made the point that people freaked out about megan fox being cast as april because shes not a redhead, so ofcourse this will make them go nuts, i guess i dont care either way if hes black or not, but sue has to be black too if thats the case. They start making too many changes then we dont get the characters we grew up with, we get a shitty knock off movie when directors and writers want to put too much of

How about Sue Storm actually looking like an all-American blonde this time around, and not some bronzed bimbo. January Jones perhaps?

Yeah, or instead of January Jones you could get someone who can act.

Don't think its completely necessary to also have a black Sue as well (though I'd be mightily impressed if they did)...having them be adopted brother-sister would fit in with the unconventional family theme of Fantastic Four. But if you do that, have Sue be the adopted one.

But go ahead, some dickhead insist that a movie about comic book characters created when all superheroes HAD to be white means they still have to be white in 2013.

Thank god for rationality! Reading down these comments, I was very worried that the world went back in time about 50 years. Seriously, thanks for being smart about this.
