Is Morris Chestnut a contender to play Marvel's Black Panther?

Apr. 8, 2013by:

Morris Chestnut, perhaps best known as the tragic character Ricky in BOYZ IN THE HOOD, has dropped a very suggestive Tweet that leads us to believe he is either in contention for the role of Black Panther or has already been cast. It's likely that he's in the mix for the role, as there are many names that have popped up in the last year as possible contender's for the role. It's one of the most sought after roles in the Marvel Universe, seeing as there are only a handful of leading black superhero characters in their stable (Luke Cage, Falcon, and Cloak are some of the others).

Here's what Chestnut had to Tweet (along with accompanying image):

I think Chestnut is a good choice for the role.  He's been paying his dues in Hollywood for a long time and has proven to be a great addition to any cast, be it in TV shows like V or American Horror Story or feature films like THINK LIKE A MAN and KICK-ASS 2. He's got the stature and the chops to pull off ol' T'Challa with ease. I don't suspect this is for a solo film, though, as my money is on THE AVENGERS 2. I would bet good money that Black Panther will be enlisted with Earth's Mightiest Heroes when Whedon sets up production by the end of the year. The timing is right to start casting the inevitable new roles and I'm betting that Black Panther is one of the more crucial ones to nail down.

Here's the description of Black Panther for those not in the know (from Marvel's wiki):

T'Challa's birth killed his mother, N'Yami, and his adopted older brother, Hunter, blamed him for her death. His second mother, Ramonda, left the family when T'Challa was only eight, and when he was in his teens, his father T´Chaka was murdered by Klaw over the rare metal Vibranium that comes from Wakanda. Klaw was later driven away after almost being killed by T'Challa.

As a young man, T'Challa traveled to America and Europe for school, and came back to perform his duties in his tribe to become a man to lead the country. After beating the then current Black Panther and taking an herb to link him to Bast, the Panther God, the herb also enhanced him which made him almost superhuman as T'Challa became the new Black Panther, leader of the Panther Clan, and King of Wakanda. This made his adopted older brother hate him even more, and in turn became the leader of the Wakandan secret police, the Hatut Zeraze, and was called the White Wolf.

More as this develops. You can catch Chestnut next in KICK-ASS 2, whick hits theaters on August 16, 2013.

Hmm

It seems to me on joblo with most movies and articles everyone is for foreign black actors versus american black actors.. I think Morris could be a decent fit but I know there is better for the role.

Morris Chestnut is a solid fit, and will be a nice asset to the MCU.

If not him, then Isaiah Mustafa!

are we sure it's Marvel's Black Panther and not a member of the Black Panther Party for some Civil Rights Era period piece?

Get a BP fix in the meanwhile.

Morris Chestnut is a respectable choice for Black Panther. A comicfan can see him playing the role. In the books, T'Challa tends to be an earnest type anyway. On American Horror Story, Chestnut showed that he can play earnest hero well.
Djimon Hounsou would be an ideal Black Panther. He has the accent, the acting skills, and the action skills for the role. Also, he has played the character very well before. Hounsou was the voice actor for the Black Panther motion comic. If you have not,

Thoroughly, I enjoyed watching the disc. It might provide fans a good fix while waiting for Klaw, T'Challa, the Wakandans, and everyone to appear on the big screen. Plus, the Black Panther themesong will stick in your head for days and days.

For me, the right mix of charm, athletic capacities, 'feline' charisma and who could pass for a prince is

Well, Bigger Boat, EVERYTHING I've seen him in proves me he is an average actor AT BEST, and CAN NOT pass for an educated prince.
You don't agree, good for you !

dont care

i hate this guy!!!

also see when the avengers 3 is coming out and there is like 10 "avengers" in it! everyone better start crying about overloading the movie with characters!

the only reason the first worked is because we had 4 main avengers, sure hawkeye and black widow where in the movie but supporting roles. the next 2 will fail for the exact reason the first worked as a good summer blockbuster.

The only actors that I would like to see Marvel cast as Black Panther are Chesnut, Idris Elba, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. I think they would all do a great job.

He's definitely a good choice to play Black Panther and someone who would bring much depth to this kick ass character.

I'm very excited to see him in anything related to the Marvel films. It's about time he got his own movie going.

Get djimon hounsou, He is perfect and if hes too old, Which I dont think he would be, I mean, Robert Downey Jr isnt exactly his "Weird Science" age, but it worked. And if thats not workable, Wesley Pipes, er, I mean Snipes is outta prison.

You realize Morris was not in Kick-Ass right? He is replacing Omari Hardwick's character Marcus. You guys keep talking about him not having a screen presence, well it's because he's not in the freaking movie.

Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje still gets my vote...

Hard to say if Morris Chestnut is the ideal choice...I almost would say to go with someone a bit younger. Wasnt Wesley Snipes attached to play the Black Panther? but anyhow...Morris Chestnut isnt a bad choice..I could see him playing the Black Panther!

Or credit. Paul's got it wrong, he's only in the sequel, though his character exists in both.

I think you'd want someone younger like John Boyega (Attack the Block.) But it could be they're also looking for someone to play T'Chaka, T'Challa's father and Black Panther before him. Always thought it'd be cool to have Djimon Hounsou kick ass in the Panther suit in the first act and then passing the baton to Boyega.

Of course that could make the movie feel a little too much like 'Thor.'

I kind of like this choice. Yeah, he isnt as young as some fans want, but he would be a great addition to Robert D. Jr, Mark Ruffalo and the rest of the crew.

I really really hope Marvel introduces Black Panther soon. He is a badass character and the biggest black superhero, so this is the perfect time! fingers crossed for an Avengers 2 introduction

Forgot all about Housou. Being African it seems he could bring an understanding and depth to the character that others couldn't. A quality actor as well (Amistad, Blood Diamond).

No.

That tweet could mean any number of things. Maybe just an invite to audition?

That said I think he is a poor choice. Not a great actor in my opinion. Physically he meets the criteria, but I cannot see the guy carrying a film. Elba would be my first choice as well. Thor might hurt his chances, but he would be a perfect Black Panther.

i say Foxx because he has star power and could headline his own film after Avengers 2, he has the depth as an actor to do it, watch any of his roles that were directed by Michael Mann, he is barely recognizable Ali. I also think he could hold his own against Downey, it would be Marvels 2nd largest casting decision if they went with him, arguably the biggest since Downey's stock wasn't to high pre-Iron-Man.
