Is Philip Seymour Hoffman taking Joaquin Phoenix for a ride in this trailer for The Master?

Jul. 20, 2012by: Niki Stephens

Paul Thomas Andersons films are always a breath of fresh air. His eye for detail and perfect ability to catch a moment paired with an amazing score are something to admire. If I loved this man anymore it would be awkward.

The theatrical trailer for THE MASTER finally debuted last night. Im sure I dont have to tell you that this film is going to be amazing. While I think that Joaquin Phoenix will do an excellent job, I have to wonder what it would be like to see Jeremy Renner in his place. Oh, and the Scientology parallels are in there. Check it out below.

A charismatic intellectual (Hoffman) launches a religious organization following World War II. A drifter (Phoenix) becomes his right-hand man but as the faith begins to gain a fervent following, the drifter finds himself questioning the belief system and his mentor.

Extra Tidbit: This might be a difficult one, but what is your favorite scene from one of PTA's films?

Goddamn, what a trailer.

But I'm pretty sure it would be a hell of a lot more awkward if it was me instead of the lovely Ms. Stephens who was a bit too smitten with PTA.

Amazing trailer.

TidBit: A tie between Tom Cruise's bedside breakdown in Magnolia... that was the first time I realized Tom Cruise could actually really make me feel something. And of course the, "I AM THE THIRD REVELATION!" scene from There Will Be Blood.

YES!

I've been waiting for this for a while, and they don't even give us a release date? Bummer. I really love There Will be Blood and Boogie Nights, Magnolia I've only seen once but my personal favorite has to be Daniel Day Lewis' "Are you envious?" speach from TWBB. I saw it in the first trailer and it just fascinated me. This guy who just didn't like people and it resonated with me.

A MASTER FILMMAKER

I suppose I can thank puberty for bringing me to Love Paul Thomas Anderson Films. I was 17 years old when I saw the trailer for BOOGIE NIGHTS. And being a young man I thought I would see some awesome sex and naked girls in a film about the porno buisness. What I got was a masterpiece that I didn't expect and every film of P.T. Anderson's since BOOGIE NIGHTS ( MAGNOLIA, PUNCH-DRUNK-LOVE & THERE WILL BE BLOOD) has been just as brilliant and amazing in their own wonderful & haunting way. I expect

Favorite PTA scene

Hands down this goes to the opening scene of Magnolia. The scene from Punch Drunk Love where Sandler's on the phone with Phillip Seymour Hoffman's character rivals it slightly but yeah, Magnolia's opening. Even when I can't sit down for three hours and check Magnolia out I find myself watching that opening again and again. Absolute perfection.

The Master looks superb, by the way. Can't wait.

Extra Tidbit

Hands down the tracking shot in Boogie Nights where Macy kills his wife and himself. That tracking shot rivals (but does not beat) Goodfellas
