Is Tarantino planning on making Inglorious Basterds and Django Unchained into a trilogy?

Oct. 29, 2012by:

DJANGO UNCHAINED shares a lot in common with INGLORIOUS BASTERDS aside from being sprung from the insane mind of Quentin Tarantino. Both deal with significant historical periods involving the subjugation of an entire minority group (The Jewish people in BASTERDS and African slaves in DJANGO UNCHAINED). Both films also feature the great Christoph Waltz in a major role. Even visually, the two films look closer in cinematic style than any other prior Tarantino films. Could this just be a new phase in the director's career or was this intentional?

When asked recently about the possibility of these films being the first two parts of a trilogy, Tarantino had this to say: "I don't know, INGLORIOUS BASTERDS and DJANGO UNCHAINED bespeak a trilogy," Tarantino said. "As different as they are, there is a companion piece quality. There might very well be a third one. I just don't know what it is yet."

MTV Movies Blog theorizes it could be a 1930's gangster movie or a Cold War spy thriller. You could even go back and say KILL BILL was really the first chapter since it dealt in revenge and subjugation of women. But, on the other hand, KILL BILL is another entity entirely.

There are numerous sub-genres that Tarantino has not played with yet that could make a great final chapter to this thematic series. I personally would love to see him make something like OCEAN'S ELEVEN and gather all of the great actors from his prior movies and a classy 1960s era heist flick.

DJANGO UNCHAINED opens everywhere on Christmas Day.

I'd love to see him tackle a Native American revenge flick. Seems that's the one genocide hollywood always stays away from.

Other than the insistence on a white or half-breed protagonist I can't see how that historical chapter has been neglected by Hollywood.

cool

I was just thinking today that even though i love all of Tarantino's films (even Death Proof to some extent), i long for another crime film like the good old days. Another Reservoir Dogs or Pulp Fiction. Something with criminals shooting the shit and being themselves. Now that you mention it, a 60s era crime film that harkens back to "Oceans 11" and "Italian Job" would be perfect for him. Whatever his next project is, i'm sure its a good one. And i really hope he doesnt quit after #10

I can see the 3rd movie being a cowboys vs. indians type film, with the Native Americans has the heroes. Django is more of a "southern" than a western, according to Tarantino. But Tarantino doing a traditional western would be really awesome.

Okay, so we've got Jewish revenge. We've got slavery revenge. What other kinds of twisted historical payback do you think would interest QT while giving him something different. Because I'd argue all his movies have the distinction of trying something a little different.

Maybe post-war Japanese Americans. Or colonial Native Americans. What's the population that got really screwed over in a way that could lend itself to a bloody good reckoning? I'm guessing his Australia movie will be a

Jewish, Black... Asian?

If the third movie in the 'trilogy' follows the trend then it would deal with another race/religion/group of people and knowing QT's love for martial arts flicks I could see him incorporating that into it somehow, someway. Not necessarily kung fu itself but perhaps something to do with the railroads? Sounds perfectly fitting.

A while back he was pretty into the idea of doing Casino Royale, so the idea of a cold war type spy thriller thing with a Tarantino spin would be a great idea in my book. I would love to see what kind of insane Tarantino flair he would put on a Bond-type character. And without being constrained by the rules of the James Bond universe (so to speak) I think we could get something quite amazing.

I've wondered if he's reassessed himself. Certainly his movies don't bear much resemblance nowadays to Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs.

the title will probably begin with ONCE UPON A TIME... assuming he'll take his own advice that he once bestowed upon Robert Rodriguez for the third El Mariachi movie.

@Extratidbit

QT is unpredictable but a cold war thriller sounds good if its going to be in same vein of 'revenge flicks' I propose the Cuban Missile crisis with Christoph Waltz as Soviet double-agent working with the Cuban underground and Brad Pitt as an uptight white-house bureaucrat who dismisses the spy-plane photos as a bluff/hoax or whatever while keeping the president in dark ('Need To Know' basis and yada-yada) and is also frustratingly in love with Jackie Kennedy.

And also Marylin Munroe is an

And also Marylin Munroe is an MK Ultra brainwashed sleeper-agent who arranges the assassination!! but defects at the last minute and we know how that will turn out so on to plan B... NUKE THE CAPITALIST PIGS! VIVA FIDEL because F**K YOU THATS WHY!

He's already said that the things Kill Bill, Basterds and Django all have in common is the theme of revenge.

A film centered around gay & lesbian characters might be interesting fare to round out a trilogy. And might fit in with a 50s/60s Cold War spy theme as gay people were often lumped in as Communists by McCarthyism. Despite the fact that LGBT people were brutally persecuted under Communist regimes from Cuba to Moscow.

Civil Rights Movement

I think he'll stop dicking around and just make a film set in the late 60's/early 70's, base it technically on the civil rights movement and then follow gangsters or something.

Remake Doctor Strangelove?

like how he remade "Inglourious Basterds" and "Django", in spirit more than an actual hollywood remake. Have the basic element of an army General orders the bomb in McCarthy's America. It could be really funny and right up Tarantino's alley. Just ballparking ideas here. Any thoughts?

How about the people of Dresden revenge film for the fire bombing? Or how about a revenge movie about white African farmers killing the murderous pieces of shit that went farm to farm in large numbers preying on white familes?

Or is this just restricted to PC stupidity that makes hipster tards feel better about the guilt they felt during their stunted high school history classes?

Probably not. At the end of the day QT dropped out of the 3rd grade and is at heart a displaced hillbilly.
