Is there a Battle: Los Angeles sequel on the way?

Mar. 27, 2012by: Alejandro Stepenberg

In an interview with Collider for WRATH OF THE TITANS (March 30th, folks!), director Jonathan Liebesman was kind enough to give this answer when pressed if there would be a sequel to his relatively successful alien invasion flick:

“We’ve just started the script now, so that’s where we are. We have just begun the script. Just because I don’t want the studio to get pissed at me, I’m not sure what I can and can’t say about it. But what’s exciting is it sounds like the budget will be as big. They’re really going to make it an event.”

So long as Aaron Eckhart is there, I'll be there.  While BATTLE: LOS ANGELES was entertaining enough on its own, I'll turn out for most anything Eckhart sees fit to involve himself in (and he's already said that he's interested).  But I wouldn't hold your breath for more news, as if Liebesman first has to shoot NINJA TURTLES before he could return to direct a BATTLE: LOS ANGELES sequel.  More as we hear it!

In other news, Eckhart's co-star Michelle Rodriguez is very intense...

Extra Tidbit: BATTLE: LOS ANGELES grossed a total of over $211 million worldwide, but only about $83.5 million of that was from domestic box office receipts.

Im game for a sequel. With minor script work, the 1st film would have been way more amazing than it was. But there were alot of things they got right. Just enough for me to say i really dug it.

The first one was an ok way to kill 2 hours, but nothing special. I have no interest in a seqeul. I also have no interest in a sequel to the crappy Clash of the Titans remake, or the Ninja alien turtles movie. This guy could be the next Ratner.

This was always a 'wait for it on video" movie for me. Glad I didn't pay to see it in the theater. It was nothing special. I like Eckhart a lot-- he was even good in The Rum Diaries, which was a total mess-- but the first film had virtually no story, utterly stock characters and second rate special effects. It was a poor man's Independence Day.

I saw this opening day with my Dad who is a retired Marine. When we got there the theater was packed full of other Marines as well. It was probably one of the best cinema experiences I've had.

That being said, Aaron Eckhart is really what drove the movie for me. If the sequel does happen:

1) Aaron Eckhart needs to be back in the lead role.

2) It needs to be different, 'expanded', with a brand new concept that we haven't seen before. Battle:LA is good and fun as a single movie that

please say so...

This was one of the better action flicks of 2011. And it was a global invasion, kinda reminded me of Resistance.

Can't say I was a fan of the first movie. It wasn't terrible, but it was bland. I couldn't remember hardly anything about it a day after I saw it. Maybe the sequel will be an improvement.

thought it was a fun flick

was a cool, unique POV for an alien invasion movie. I'm looking forward to another... anyone have any guesses? Battle: New York? or do you think they'll take it out of America and go somewhere else?

Battle of Los Angeles wasn't a great movie by any means, but like what TarantinoDork said it was a just plain fun action film. I found it to be a good time and would easily watch it again.

Undeserved hate

I really dug it. And I say that as someone who hated the trailers.

Basically one long action scene, but surprisingly coherent and never tiresome. Made some smart plot decisions (i.e. recognizing it was an alien invasion BEFORE the shooting started) very well paced and despite that every single war movie cliche was present in the script it pulled off some genuinely likable characters and a good lead performance by Eckhart. Just a fun, lean, straight ahead sci fi actioner without all the

Just a fun, lean, straight ahead sci fi actioner without all the fluff of unlikely hipster romances or lazy racist stereotypes (yet had an effortless and naturally diverse cast, hard to do even today.)

And yeah, the movie's got a lot of love for the troops (as I do)...but unlike Transformers actually gives them some room to be more than two-dimensional infallible heroes.

I don't know about a sequel, but Battle:LA has earned a spot in my mental go-to 'B-movie action' catalog.

ok, good list, but the sheer epicness of LOTR puts it in a class of it's own imo, but yeah, good list. And yeah, you're right, but it's pretty close to sop of the B list.

Do they even need a script?

It was just mindless action with no plot whatsoever. As for the tidbit, I guess other countries enjoy seeing aliens fucking up the US more than we do...

I was really disappointed by the film. I thought it would be the "good" alien invasion movie to counteract Skyline. However, it was as if the 90s hadn't ended and the steadicam hadn't been invented.

I love alien invasion films. I thought the initial Battle: LA trailer was pretty exciting. But the film ended up boring the HELL out of me. I have no predisposition on this sequel, really. If it happens and turns out to be great, cool. If it doesn't, whatever. I just wished Battle: LA would have been more fun than what it was. At least it was better than Skyline.

Less inspirational "I'll bring you home alive" speeches, more Rodriguez and more alien ass-kicking and I'm there.
