Is Toy Story 3 really a Holocaust metaphor?

06.21.2010

This is an interesting little article that will probably offend a whole host of people, but Jordon Hoffman at UGO had a thought that the plot of TOY STORY 3 often looked like a metaphor for the plight of the Jews in the Holocaust.

Intentional? I doubt it. Interesting? Yeah, a little bit. Read the parallels below, but if you haven’t seen the film yet, warning, there are SPOILERS ahoy.

Andy is seventeen and about to leave for college. These toys are left behind, just as host nations left behind the Jews as the Third Reich conquered Europe.

Woody holds a meeting, where the assembled toy family discusses possible outcomes for their new position in the world. Change a few words and it is the same exact scene at the train station from Roman Polanski's award winning Holocaust drama The Pianist. No, we won't just be abandoned. Surely we can be useful to them somehow. Yes, we've lost friends (Bo Peep), but surely that can't happen to us.

Buzz Lightyear stands forward and suggests sanctuaryIN AN ATTIC. Are you kidding me?

The cattle car comes for the toys in the form of a horrible garbage bag - but they don't go straight to extermination. They find themselves alive and at Sunnyside where they are put "to work." (Consider this, then, Dachau instead of Treblinka.)

Once there, they meet the toy version of Sonderkommando, toys who live the stay fed and well-sheltered (like Ken in his dream house) while leading other toys to a certain death. Newcomers are bashed and abused in the "Caterpillar Room" by non-age appropriate children until they resemble Muselmann and are eventually thrown into the trash chute.

The trash chute leads to a systematic sorting of metal (e.g. any last valuables) until, eventually, the fiery crematoria.

Our heroes get saved at the last minute, of course, and they find themselves a new homeland. It is a place where many of their kind already live and have an established foothold, and it would appear that security, finally, is at hand if they are vigilant.

I’ll be honest, I had glimpses of concentration camp ovens during that final terrifying scene, and some of the other stuff is curious to note. I highly doubt this was intentional on Pixar’s part, but it certainly is interesting to think about in retrospect.

What do you guys think? Wild conspiracy theory, or is there something here?

LMAO

What a stretch, this guy pulled it outta his ass pretty much because everything hes talking about: attic, sunnyside etc. all has 150% more relevance to toys (where do you put toys you dont want to get rid of but have no use for... (well if you dont have an attic then the basement) the friggen attic! or donate them! Thats what made TS3 awesome was the relatablitlity to all of it, not in the sense of the holocaust though homiee, lol but it got UGO some attention so good fer him I guess

Seriously?

Ok I AM Jewish and come from a pretty religious family. I can kinda see where it was going but then again not. I honestly don't think this guy ever had toys in his life. I watched that movie and I swear I hated myself for any toy I ever threw away or didn't keep with the rest of the ones I own. Holocaust? No. Hard truth and realization that the things we grew up with still can have sentimental value? Yes. I understand the guy trying but sorry my Grandfather who was in the Holocaust said that

Oh and the woody wears a yellow star? Priceless Joblo. I love you guys.

If Hoffman is trying to make a case that Toy Story 3 was intentionally written as a Holocaust metaphor, that is beyond absurd. However, if he is merely pointing out the various curious intersections of world history and the story elements of Toy Story 3, his article is intriguing.

Wow, thanks to the internet insane and incredibly lame ideas can be viewed at the speed of light. This movie is only 4 days old and we got this? Freedom of speech really is a double edged sword.

I would say this is insane, except twice during the movie I said, "Holy shit...this looks like a concentration camp." I'm not Jewish. However, holocaust imagery is so much a part of our zeitgeist that it's difficult to abandon it or even avoid using it.

By the way, remember those weird [link] They have one of them on top of the "prison" the toys are in and when backlit by the moon it looks just like f'ing barbwire. I actually noted that while in the theatre.

interesting

While this is interesting and pretty funny to read through after having seen the movie, I can't say that ANY of this was intentional by Pixar. Everyone is always looking for some hidden, dark, and inappropriate message from kids flicks. If that's what you have to do to get into a movie, then do it. But I don't think you're successfully going to ruin a movie with an article like this. Nor are you going to add readers, cuz you sound ridiculous.

Kindergarten Cop is a Holocaust Metaphor

In this prequel to Jingle All the Way, Detective Kimbel is sent to a concentration camp to oversee day-to-day operations, such as yelling at children, hating children, ordering children around, and in the end, beating them into submission. Also, he fights and kills a Jewish sympathizer who infiltrates the concentration camp and tries to rescue one little Jewish boy.

Jingle All the Way is a Holocaust metaphor

Detective Kimbel, who is Austrian, which practically makes him German - and therefore a Nazi - gets sent on a terrible errand that he'd rather not do. This reflects the idea that there were Nazis who disagreed with Hitler.

Clearly

Jurassic Park is clearly a Holocaust metaphor

John Hammond is a white Nazi doing bizarre experiments on innocent dinosaurs who are trapped behind electrified fences. When the dinosaurs want to get free, they are hunted. In the end, Hammond flees in a helicopter (just like Hitler committing suicide). Also, it's got to be more than coincidence that Hammond and Hitler both begin with an "H". Don't forget Alan Grant and Ellie Sattler both had BLUE EYES - just like the Aryans. Also, Schindler's List and Jurassic Park were both directed by

Ruin the movie much?

I can see where people can see the similarities but this has been done to death with almost everything. I just hope those who haven't seen the movie yet decided not to read this. Such a great movie to have ruined, especially in a form like this.

How could he miss that both Andy and Adolf start with an A? Surely that's the final piece to the puzzle...

What a hack. I want the 3 minutes of my life back that it took me to read that ridiculous crap.

I think that is a pretty interesting theory. I think some people might make the mistake in thinking that if it really was a metaphor for the holocaust then it is a bad thing. If it is so what. We have watched holocaust movies before and have been touched by them. I don't think Pixar intentionally went for that but if they did then good for them for being able to translate that into movie about toys. It would be a difficult task to do that and make it as amazing as Toy Story 3 was.

Oh, come on. Of course a movie about imprisonment could have similarities to the Holocaust. There's no real way around it. And for someone trying to be all conspiratorial, this is the laziest attempt I've seen in a while.

This "reporter" is not clever, and any attempt at trying to be the one who cracks the case on Pixar, tried too hard and not hard enough, all at the same time.

These guys trying to be all deep are just obnoxious.

If you're LOOKING for conspiracies, you'll FIND conspiracies. It's always the case. Same can be said for a lot of Pixar movies. Truth is, you see what you WANT to see. I saw a great movie that had its heart in the right place and had nothing to do with the Holocaust. For the ones that were looking for subliminal notes, I'm sure they were there, probably by coincidence. Same can be said for hundreds of other movies.

its comlpetely unintentional

the guys at Pixar said they saw a lot of prison escape movies when making this movie. so maybe they saw a holocaust escape film. i dont really think theres anyhing wrong with this story stucture, its pretty well hidden and doesnt sympathis with any negative viewpoints.

also i always though Harry Potter was a analogy for Holocaust. Voldermont is Hitler with his growing group of follows trying to take over the government and kill mudbloods.
