UPDATED: Isla Fisher in negotiations to join Baz Lurhmann’s The Great Gatsby

UPDATED: Deadline is reporting that Ben Affleck will not play Tom Buchanan. This is due to his commitment to direct ARGO, which is about the 1979 Iran hostage crisis in the Middle East. Apparently, they tried to work something out, but it just wasn’t happening.

The lovely Isla Fisher is in negotiations to join Baz Lurhmann’s 3D adaptation of THE GREAT GATSBY.

Fisher will join Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan. Ben Affleck is also in negotiations to join.

Here are the details:

“DiCaprio is pegged to play the wealthy and mysterious Jay Gatsby, while Maguire is playing Nick Carraway, who in the novel is the narrator. Mulligan is playing Gatsby’s love, Daisy Buchanan, who is married to a wealthy chap named Tom Buchanan, whom Affleck would play if his deal makes. Fisher will play Myrtle, a married woman having an affair with Buchanan. She is later killed by a speeding car, an event that leads to the book’s tragic ending.”

She will also be slapped by Ben Affleck. During a party, Myrtle says Daisy’s name which causes Tom to backhand her. That’s all I remember, besides her dying. It’s actually all really depressing. Myrtle is having an affair, gets slapped, then dies in car crash.

The casting choices thus far are great. The only stupid part is the whole 3D thing. Lurhmann makes very visually appealing movies, but there’s only so much you can do with GATSBY.
