It’s been rumored that at least half of The New Mutants will be reshot

Man, THE NEW MUTANTS just can't catch a break. Originally slated to be released next month, 20th Century Fox pushed the Josh Boone film back to February 22, 2019 in January, and last night they pushed the film back once again to August 2, 2019. That's quite the delay, especially for a film which wrapped last year, but what's the reason behind it? The good folks over at Collider have a possible explanation, and it's not pretty.

We've known that THE NEW MUTANTS was due to undergo reshoots in order to beef up the scares and add a new character, but the studio is reportedly still concerned that the film isn't scary enough and wants it to stand out in the same way which LOGAN and DEADPOOL have. In order to get to that point, it seems that some major reshoots may be in order, and it's been rumoured that at least 50% of THE NEW MUTANTS may be reshot and that one or two new characters will be added who will be present throughout the film. Collider also states that director Josh Boone has been having creative differences with 20th Century Fox over these changes, which further goes into explaining the delay. It's wise to take this with a grain of salt, but I would hope that all the disappointment and frustration over the delays will eventually lead to a better film. Josh Boone had previously said that THE NEW MUTANTS would be "a full-fledged horror movie set within the X-Men universe," and later added that the film will probably be the "hardest PG-13 ever made. I mean, we’ve pushed it. The horror is pretty dark, but there’s also an emotional core, too. If I can scare you and make you cry: that’s the goal." Fingers crossed.

As for X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX, which found its release date pushed from November 2, 2018 to February 14, 2019, the reasons for its delay comes down to simple scheduling. Like most blockbusters, X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX will be undergoing reshoots, but due to the busy schedules of its cast, it's not easy to get them all together once again, especially as Collider states that the earliest they would be available would be in August or September. Obviously that wouldn't leave much time to complete post-production on those scenes, so instead of rushing through it, the studio elected to push the release back.

So, THE NEW MUTANTS will hit theaters on August 2, 2019, unless of course we're hit with another delay.
