It's morphin' time! The Power Rangers hit the big screen on July 22, 2016

11 months agoby:

Lionsgate and Saban have now officially set the release date for everyone’s colorful morphing teenagers. POWER RANGERS will hit theaters on July 22 2016, a prime summer release which opens opposite Guy Ritchie's KING ARTHUR. Saban's POWER RANGERS franchise is the brainchild of Haim Saban, creator and producer of the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series that launched in 1993. That was the only series I ever watched and I think most of us are familiar with. There were two previous movies, Mighty MORPHIN POWER RANGERS: THE MOVIE in 1995 and TURBO: A POWER RANGERS MOVIE in 1997.

Here’s a brief synopsis:

Based on a story by executive producer Roberto Orci (The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Star Trek Into Darkness) and screenwriters Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller (X-Men: First Class, Thor) comes a modern reinvention of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a group of ordinary high school kids who find themselves infused with extraterrestrial powers and must harness those powers as a team to save the world.

Last month we told you that TRANSFORMERS and STAR TREK producer Roberto Orci opened up about the movie which is still in very early stages. He revealed that the film will exist in continuity with the world of the TV series and also discussed the kind of research that he, Miller, and Stenz have been doing in preparation for the script. Here are those quotes again, no sweat.

Orci said he and the writing team have been researching the history of POWER RANGERS:

“One of the first things we did was learn and read… [Saban] has 600 pages of research that they have on their stuff. We read through the synopsis of everything they did and we are actually taking into account quite a bit of the canon in a real way. We’re not just a leave it behind reboot. [Haim] Saban cares very much about that. This is something that he created. I had to go to his house, personally, to tell him, ‘Listen, I’m your man. Miller and Stenz, these are your guys. I promise you I won’t ruin your franchise.’ And he said, ‘It’s very important to me, because kids around the world know what the Power Rangers are. So you can’t just come in here and walk all over it. It better be consistent with what I’ve been doing.’ And I said, ‘Yes sir!’”

Whether the POWER RANGERS movie will exist within the continuity of the TV show:

“It’s got a continuity within the world. I can’t tell you what, but it does have continuity.”

So will you be watching on July 22, 2016?

It HAS to be better than TMNT

This is the last hope of my childhood becoming a modern movie. The past few reboots/remakes just sucked and had no soul. Hopefully Lionsgate will put out a movie made for the original fans and not the teens of today who only know the 13th generation of power rangers.

Just feel empty

I want to love it but it will probably just feel soulless like all the other reboots I've seen. Robocop, Total Recall, TMNT, Nightmare on Elm Street. I want to love these movies, they are pretty and all but just feels like something is missing. I'm just waiting for them to put the final nail in my childhood and remake Gremlins and Critters.

A GREMLINS remake is happening. The writer of ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER and DARK SHADOWS will write the script.

I don't really know what to think right now. Power Rangers has always come across as a cultural thing that was more relevant to Japan than to the west. By this I mean that, despite it's popularity, it never came across as anything more than a whimsical amusement than a serious franchise. This is different from treatment of sentai series in Japan, where these things do huge amounts of money and something like Kamen Rider comes in number one at the B.O. whenever a new movie comes out. I have no idea what to expect from this since the only thing I know about Power Rangers is the goofy shows and films that have come out in the past. If this is some kind of reboot and they are looking to make big money, I can't imagine it being anything less than a serious effort that does away with pretty much anything we saw in the original series. Everything will have to be serious and cinematic, which is a far cry from the rest of the franchise.

Maybe what they mean by continuity with the show will just be that it is based on the original MMPR series in that same world or whatever, just 20+ years later (really that long...). And maybe there will be cameos.

The show's world 20+ years later? That's POWER RANGERS MEGAFORCE, which doesn't really explain anything (read my post below).

This is making less and less sense.

How can you make a reboot with the MIGHTY MORPHIN' team and still have continuity with the show? Specially since it's been confirmed that TOMMY will regain his GREEN RANGER powers for the upcoming Mega War.

This is an idea I'm not opposed to. They could explore a grittier side to the Power Rangers universe which could be great. I would absolutely geek out if they had cameos from the original rangers in various capacities (obviously excluding Thuy Trang who tragically passed away in 2001). Throw Austin St. John, Jason David Frank, Amy Jo Johnson, Walter Jones and David Yost into the mix as former rangers or something like that (reprising their original characters) and that will really get a buzz

To whoever does the costume designs,
Your job should be easy. Nobody watched the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers because they were interested in deep character stories. They watched the show because the costumes looked cool and the fought some shit. Don't bother with trying to "modernize" the costumes or add a bunch of gears, pockets, layers, plates, parts, pieces, or other stuff. You're not making a period piece. You're doing the Power Rangers. Just go with what works.

Question though... if this has continuity how can it be connected to the series if it's about the original "mighty morphin" rangers?

Power Rangers? Fucking seriously?

I know I've said this before, but geek nostalgia is ruining cinema. Power Rangers was one of the worst children shows produced in the past 20 years. It had horrendous writing, bad acting, bad production value, bad everything. But because it aired during someone's childhood, they'll pretend its the greatest thing ever. It was a bad show meant only to entertain very small children with its goofiness & high energy.

I hated the Power Rangers! Couldn't get me to watch it to save my life. It looked terrible and cheesy and everything else you said here. You summed it up pretty good.

Podcastin' the classics.

If you want to relive the craziness of the original, my friend and I do a podcast called Mighty Morphin' Ranger Danger where we go back and watch the original episodes and revel in their straight- up insanity.

We've done the first 40 episodes already, including the legendary Green With Evil miniseries.

You can download the episodes at [link] or subscribe to the show on iTunes, Stitcher or YouTube.

I don't remember off-hand, but I believe in the Super Sentai season the first Power Rangers used footage from, the green and white ranger were two different people.

Fuck yes!

I agree with nick2903, in that I hope they keep it close to the original as possible since that's what it made work as well as it did and also the whole nostalgia feeling of it all.

And hopefully it doesn't go in the same direction as the new TMNT film in that it has no respect to the source material and shitty character designs.

So you no longer want a first class style power ranger movie?
You are one confused child.

No, I still do. I just don't want something in the vein of the new TMNT film. There's a BIG difference between the quality of the new TMNT film, and First Class.

If anything, I think this new Power Rangers film should try to do what Pacific Rim did in terms of scope and tone.

Wow. This was such a terrible show. No way I could ever take this shit serious as a movie. Maybe if it were some kind of spoof.

I'd love for the suits to be as close to the original mighty morphin suits as possible. It's the nostalgic factor that will get asses into seats.
And I hope that political correctness doesn't affect this film and we still get a black guy and an Asian in the black and yellow suits respectively. Just for old times sake!
