It's Muppets or Kristen Wiig for one director
Back when I interviewed Judd Apatow last year, he mentioned that after a flurry of produced comedies that came out in 2008 and 2009, the only project he had ready to go before cameras in 2010 was an untitled comedy starring Kristen Wiig. I've been trying to find out as much about the project as I could, but things have been surprisingly hush-hush. All I could find out was that the project was written by Wiig and would shoot after SNL wraps this spring. Now we finally have some quality info.
After quality supporting roles in KNOCKED UP, WHIP IT and EXTRACT, Wiig will get her first starring role in BRIDESMAIDS, a Universal comedy about two women competing to plan their best friends wedding. While that logline makes it sound some cheap BRIDE WARS spinoff, with Apatow and Wiig involved, you can expect there'll be much more to it than that. Apatow, Wiig and Universal are in talks with James Bobin, co-creator of "Flight of the Conchords" to direct the film but there's a slight problem...
Vulture is reporting that Disney badly wants Bobin to direct their upcoming Muppet film saying, "the movie is James' to direct — if he wants it." This is the same project that was written by Jason Segel and Nicholas Stoller (the latter of whom was expected to direct but that no longer seems the case).
If I had to guess, I'd say Bobin would go with the Wiig project, which from what I've heard, is pretty much ready to begin filming as soon as Wiig is available. The Muppet movie may still need more time. Which movie would you rather see first?
UPDATE - Shows how much I know. The Hollywood Reporter was able to confirm this morning that Bobin will in fact direct Disney's Muppet movie and not BRIDESMAIDS for Judd Apatow.
|Extra Tidbit:||This Kristen Wiig character would make an awesome Halloween costume.|
