It's not a bird, a plane, or a man, it's our first look at CBS's Supergirl

05.13.2015

CBS has just released their first look trailer for Supergirl, the new DC Comics series which stars Melissa Benoist as Kara Zor-El, and it's a whopping six and a half minutes of awkward office flirtations, getting coffee for the boss, and cape problems. Check it out for yourselves and let us know your thoughts in the comments.

If I can say anything about the trailer it's that I'm glad her costume isn't quite as drab as those first photos led us to believe.

Supergirl comes to us from Greg Berlanti, the man behind The CW's Arrow and The Flash, and follows Kara Zor-El who has been hiding her powers on Earth since she arrived years ago; however the time has finally come for her to be the hero she was always meant to be and Kara begins to embrace her superhuman abilities. Melissa Benoist landed the title role with Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant, Chyler Leigh as Alexandra “Alex” Danvers, Mehcad Brooks as James Olsen, and David Harewood as Hank Henshaw rounding out the main cast. Original Supergirl Helen Slater will also be making an appearance as will Dean Cain.

Will you folks be checking out Supergirl on CBS?

Not my thing....

But this may be perfect for my teenage daughter, who is 13. I just hope the writers make her a strong role model and not a bimbo. I'm also hoping they keep it somewhat wholesome and it doesn't devolve into a soap opera where everyone is sleeping with each other. So far, The Flash is keeping a pretty good balance with that tone so I'm encouraged that this is the same team.

It looks great! I can't wait. Anyone with Superman's powers is badass to me. So I'll love to see Supergirl kick ass. I remember my college roommate thinking Smallville looked cheesy and he was shocked when I said I wanted to see it. Sometimes a little bit a cheese is ok if you can see the potential in the show.

HELLO JOBLO!!!!

My FB just got hit with the trailer for next year's Legends Of Tomorrow. Vandal Savage??? Really??? Looks stupid cool! The action was good, the characters were cool (albeit a bit of an odd mix), and it looks about 100 times cooler than this trailer for Supergirl.

This site seriously needs a tip link.....

... Meh. This looks like a cross between Devil Wears Prada and Lois & Clark... very different feel than CW's Flash and Arrow. And seems separate from MoS cannon. I don't really think I understand DC's endgame right now. Not saying it's going to be bad... I just don't understand where they are going or what they're trying to do.

I know its meant for a female audience but looks too fluffy with stereotypical girlish portrayals. I mean how many times do we need to see the over-the-top bitchy female boss stereotype....so exaggerated. And please tell me that wasn't a gay BFF....

Doesn't look too bad really. Seems to have a comparable tone to The Flash which is fairly watchable stuff.

I enjoyed it - very light hearted and Kara comes across as super cute - definitely a big jump from that first promo photo where I thought she looked very ordinary. My only downside is that they actually made her cousin a part of this world - so does this mean this show won't be part of the Arrow/Flash world? It would fit right in with that universe - I was really hoping Kara would simply be the substitute for Kal-El (as Arrow is for Batman). Kinda sucks they've made him a part of this

I'm hopeful.

I think it looks good. It looks fun, like a comic book show should be! It honestly looks like a decent Supergirl TV show.

I think it looks cute. Its light, fluffy, girly, not overly serious. I'm surprised at how much I enjoyed the main character in the teaser. We have plenty of dark foreboding superhero things on TV. This looks like it can be a perfect yin to that yang. Clearly it's not for everyone judging the comments but I'm gonna check it out. I like fluff on my peanut butter sandwich sometimes.

Seriously i think it's the best looking thing DC have done even if it's on the "girly" side, maybe my girlfriend will love that ! Less serious then other DC stuff and i think its the best approach for there material cause it's less grounded than marvel stuff !

The superhero stuff looks fun and well executed. The mix of quippy, youthfulness and super-powered battles could have been something akin to what Buffy managed back in the day (or when she started flying in the comics). However literally everything else about the trailer is (to quote Ghostbusters) "the worst kind of popular tripe". Don't get me wrong, I'm all for light-heartedness and pep, just not ancient archetypes and out-dated ideals.

Also is the real Jimmy Olsen stood behind that large athletic male model?

What the....?

I never thought I would agree with the easily offended, cry-baby internet social police, but man this is the most insulting trailer I have ever seen.. This is so bad they should never let this show see the light of day. I can't believe this is actually real. It's like they mixed Catwoman (the Halle Berry version), The Devil Wears Prada, and Aly McBeal into a blender and took a shit all over the remains. Just write a fucking superhero story! This shit is not this hard.

This could improve

if they lost the DEVIL WEARS PRADA ripoff and the teenybopper angst. Give it a season, hopefully it'll find its footing.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer needed two seasons to get its act together and Agents of SHIELD needed half a season.

It looks like it had potential...

... and then it go thrown away by pandering to teenage girls. Some of the scenes and shots looked decent but they left in too many cliche's in the writing. If their intent was to empower women, they should have just written interesting female characters. It's condescending to the audience for the point of the story to be that women "can" be *insert positive adjective here* too. You don't have to tell us that, we already got that. Show it through the writing.

Doesn't look horrible like the other commenters are making it to be

I'm actually surprised how decent this looks. However, it doesn't look like a show I will NEED to watch, but I understand this will have a pretty big following especially from the female audience. Will be keeping tabs on this show for sure. (plus its not dark, gritty, dour like the other DC properties)

It feels very pre-Iron Man but I can live with it. Certainly too tweeny for me (this looks more like a CW show than the one's that have been on the CW). I'm not an expert on the charecter but I'm pretty shore that's not Jimmie Olsen (no issues with the race swap but Isn't he suposed to be more weak and nerd-like). Also some of the CGI looks like crap (not that it's not to be expected for a TV series).

That being said it doesnt look terrible and I'm super (no pun intended) into Melissa

How did she get the scar between her eyebrows? Kryptonite chicken pox?
Is that Calista Flockhart? I seriously cannot tell. Damn she looks awful. When she said she was hot I threw up in my mouth a little.
Jimmie Olsen is black now too? Will the PC BS ever end?
This looks WAY worse than Smallville ever did, and that show took a lot of crap. I don't see this making it past the first season.
Daredevil this is NOT.

1. Nitpicking
2. You don't think she's attractive. Okay, don't be an asshole.
3. Jimmy Olsen isn't a big deal. In Man of Steel Jimmy is a woman. You don't care about Jimmy and you know it. Stop. Just stop.
5. Not everything has to be like everything else. Super Girl and Daredevil are two different shows with two different tones. To compare this with Daredevil is irrational and unfair.

I have no idea if this will be good. Right now, I'm a bit wary myself, but it's shit rants like yours

It reminds me a lot of the Black Widow: Age of Me spoof SNL did - but for everyone who keeps complaining that DC is all grimdark, something light-hearted and in a different genre which could reach a different audience shouldn't be a bad thing. Did cringe pretty hard at some of the dialogue, but I am glad they reference Superman and are involving the DEO. Of course it's a low, low benchmark, but this looks a lot better than the 1984 Helen Slater-starring film. I hope they'll be able to balance

Fingers and toes crossed.

I was thinking that too!!

This is just the wrong direction to take this series though. If it was Superboy, you wouldn't be seeing a million stupid romantic Comedy moments that just deter the fact that this chick can do some serious damage.

This is just lazy writing.

Superman may be the more popular character, that doesn't mean there isn't room for a show without him. The Supergirl comics have been around for quite some time.

WIth this trailer, I didn't think Jimmy Olsen knew Clark's identity as this new show is letting on. Oh well.

I'm mixed.....

That had some really good moments, some adequate special effects (pretty good for TV), and an interesting superhero (the first one that we've seen that can't seem to make up his/her mind if that's what they want to do).

The bad is all the cliche stuff (mean boss, women's power issues, potential boyfriend turned helper, etc...). This could turn out to be cool (at least deserving a place with AoS & The Flash), or it could turn out to be Smallville II. From this commercial I really couldn't

It will depend on how they handle the tension and villains. And they should have at least one appearance from her "cousin" if they're going to constantly name drop. The idea that he wouldn't take 5 minutes out of his day to see how she's doing is stupid, and will be an albatross around their neck.

Nope. I feel like this is already confused and doesn't know its audience.

So they are trying to make this a feminist show, with all of those "girls are strong and capable" lines thrown in the mix but then it goes and looks like EVERY horrible RomCom that set feminist back ten steps.

"Oh my god, you're gay!!" - is that seriously a line just spoken by the gay actor playing a straight guy??

Had some definite doubts when I read the shows description.
Looks like they are going after the female audience so expect all the online male fans to hate this even though it ain't made for them.
The humor MIGHT carry it though.
