It's official, DiCaprio will be Eastwood's J. Edgar Hoover

06.18.2010

A while back, speculation was that Leonardo DiCaprio might be up for the lead in Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar Hoover biopic. Well, fire up the Oscar machine, because the rumors are true, as confirmed by Deadline today, DiCaprio will be playing the FBI founder for sure.

"He going to spread his wings," one of my studio sources tells me now that Leonardo DiCaprio is set to play J Edgar Hoover in the still untitled biopic.

Imagine had been developing the Dustin Lance Black script for over a year before showing it to Universal, where the reaction was negative. But then Grazer got the screenplay to pal Clint (they did The Changeling and have had a personal relationship ever since), the two men met about it in mid-February, and the film has been on the fast track at Warner Bros.

So it sounds like the film has run into a few snags so far, but now that it’s got both Eastwood and DiCaprio attached, it’s probably going to be smooth sailing. I have to say, it is nice to see DiCaprio separate from Scorsese for an epic film like this, though I’m sure he’ll be back in his Frank Sinatra movie in no time.

It’s one of those times where you just know that Oscar nominations will rain down from the sky for a movie like this. It’s like when I first saw even the poster for THE DEPARTED. One look at it and “yup, Best Picture.” I'm seeing at least a few potential statues here already.

Extra Tidbit: I imagine Eastwood has to work his way into the cast here somewhere.

Tassi is the man!

Thanks Paul for your straight-shooting articles. No B.S., no childish rants - just the meat. BTW there are two titles in the running for this: 'G-Man' and 'Hoover'. Looks sweet!

Eastwood's behind the camera. That's good.

Leonardo di Fake Accent is in front of it. Iffy.

Me? I'll wait and see what to make of this. At least Scorsese ain't directing.

Eastwood is a great director, with an amazing eye for light and shadow. Le's face was made to be in that sort of enviroment.

This is great news. Eastwood and DiCaprio can do no wrong in my book, both are legends and I hope this movie turns out great and maybe it'll finally get Leo his long deserved Oscar. This movie is going to be awesome and I can't wait to see it.

Agreed. As soon as he pulled away from that teen idol status, Leo started to shine. Leo and Damon both really won me over with The DEPARTED though Mark Wahlberg was definitely my favorite character! "feed em shit and keep them in the dark!"

I originally hated Leo in the 90s but lately his acting career turned me to respect & like him as an actor. I hope his career only gets better from this point on and lives to be Clint's age with a great legacy too.
