It's official, Warner Bros. confirms standalone Batman film with Ben Affleck

04.12.2016

Standalone Batman film Ben Affleck DCEU

Update: Again, not a big surprise but Warner Bros. has now confirmed that Ben Affleck will be directing as well.

It's not exactly a big surprise, but Warner Bros. has finally confirmed that there will indeed to a standalone Batman film starring Ben Affleck in our future. Warner Bros. chairman and CEO Kevin Tsujihara made the announcement at CinemaCon in Las Vegas and our own Paul Shirey was in attendance to bring us the big news.

There has been plenty of speculation that Ben Affleck will direct the standalone Batman film in addition to starring in it, but Tsujihara's comment doesn't exactly clear that up. However, it seems to be a good bet that Affleck will take on directing duties as it's something that both Affleck and BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE director Zack Snyder have hinted at in the past. Several weeks ago Affleck also said that he was working on "something" with DC Comics Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns, which many took to be the standalone Batman film. As Affleck's Batman was easily the best part of BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, giving him control over the character both in front and behind the camera is something I can definitely get excited about.

Great News!

I've had my issues with Affleck in the past, but he was just not recognizable as Ben Affleck in BvS. He carried himself differently; more regal. He committed to this role wholeheartedly. I look forward to what he has to offer. .

He may have acted in some poor movies, but the dude is a bonified Homerun hitter behind the camera as a writer and a director. I have a feeling things with the DCU will start swinging positive the more movies that come out that are NOT directed by Snyder. He can shoot action and visuals well, but storytelling just hasn't been a strength. I have some hope for the handful of films on the docket for them. David Ayers is proven and doing Suicide Squad, The woman who directed Monster is doing

Although I'm still not down recasting The Flash...having Phil Lord and Christopher Miller writing/directing..is another potential slamdunk.

Personally, I really enjoyed BvS, saw it twice. A lot of it had to do with how great Ben Affleck was as Bruce/Bats, also Jeremy Irons as Alfred. I gladly look forward to seeing more of them!

Who cares at this point. If there's someone on Earth who loved BvS, they should be expelled to another galaxy as they represent a danger to mankind.

I already dislike the idea of giving the DC characters their solo movie after appearing in another movie. It just feels redundant. It's even more reduntant to make yet another solo BATMAN movie. Well, at least Ben Affleck has proven to be a good director.

I was fine with a lot of BvS to be honest, and there's plenty of routes they could go with an Affleck Batman movie, including something set before BvS. No need to shoehorn a direct comicbook adaption either - nothing wrong with a fresh story if they can come up with something suitably compelling. Hopefully WB is actually learning what works and what doesn't, but I'm glad they're trying multiple options like Suicide Squad alongside the major characters.

Since Affleck was the best part of BvS, I'm excited for this film. I hope they give him enough creative room to make it his own. I hope it will be a Batman film, not a Justice League film with a little more focus on Batman.

Not interested, as it will no doubt suck just as hard as MOS and BVSDOMARTHA.

Or let mel gibson direct it

But i would like to see Mel direct every movie anyway so....
Or maybe george miller with Mel as a bad guy.
So George Miller directing, Mel as a bad guy(would have made a great menacing joker)
and Ben affleck providing the script.

This could be the biggest 180 in the history of sequels. Afleck directing a solo Batman movie (if they get around the murdering issue) could be both the definitive take on the character and a genuinely incredibly movie spinning out of what is literally the polar opposite of that.

Noooo

It's a shame it won't be a reboot. It could even be with Affleck (before you think I hate the Fleck, I don't)... but I'd prefer Batman had nothing to do with that xenophobic meathead from BvS, who lacked any character motivation, development other than... "Martha"

Well, keep in mind Affleck didn't write BvS and there isn't exactly a ton of improv when it comes to Snyder films. Those traits were likely far more on Snyder/Goyer than Affleck. Not to mention Affleck's track record of films he directs/writes is pretty strong. Dude co wrote Good Will Hunting and was responsible for writing Gone Baby Gone and The Town. Then directed Gone Baby Gone, The Town and Argo. He may have starred in some poor movies in the past, but behind the camera, he is kind of a

Hope they bring in Catwoman and she can finally be in multiple films after that whole Batman Forever-90s fiasco when the studio panicked and went for PG movies.

As much shit people gave BvS, most will agree Affleck and Gadot filled their roles perfectly and that is why the DC cinematic universe is fine for now.

Affleck is a surprisingly good Batman / Bruce Wayne and he's a good director. I'm sure he'll direct a great Batman movie.

After the Knightfall inspired Dark Knight Rises, I'd love to see Batfleck's movie tackle the 'Knightsend' part of the Knightfall comic book storyline, where he has to fight the more brutal Jean-Paul Valley (Azrael) for the Batman cowl. But since Geoff Johns is involved, it's probably going to be a fresher story or something closer to his Batman: Earth One.

I think it was quite obvious that Affleck would be getting his own solo Batman film, but what I'm really most excited about is if he ends up directing as well as starring. The Under the Red Hood Storyline would also be a great starting point for Affleck to build Batman's side of the DCU.

Took them long enough

Hoping it's a live action adaption of Mask of the Phantasm or Hush with Matt Damon as Thomas Elliot.

Great news

Hopefully WB gets the picture that they need to get rid of Zach Snyder. He needs to go after Justice League Part 1 (only because it would be pretty hard to either get someone else with short notice or to push back production). George Miller would be great for Part 2, or for a standalone Superman film to help rehabilitate their other iconic character.

Let's just hope he'd direct it. An Under The Red Hood storyline would fit perfectly for Ben's directorial style.

Affleck's done great as a director so far, so this is good news. I still prefer Bale and Keaton to Affleck's Bruce Wayne/Batman, but I would still welcome a solo film with him. I'm secretly hoping he casts Matt Damon in a role (Riddler?).
