I've seen Captain America's costume and this is what it looks like!

05.28.2010

Some superhero costumes, like Iron Man, make fairly easy transitions to the world of movies. Others, like Captain America, prove to be a little more difficult. What works in the comics doesn't always work well with an actor actually having to wear that costume. So I've been curious to see how they were going to adapt the Captain America suit for Chris Evans to resemble the original design but work within the WWII world that Joe Johnston is creating for the film. I got an exclusive look at one of the approved costume tests for CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER and while I can't pass along anything here, I can describe to you what I saw.

Captain America will have two different costumes in the film, according to Johnston. He told the LA Times that he'll have a costume designed by the Army for his initial USO appearances that's slightly more flashy and a nod to the original design. As he gets called into active duty though, Steve Rogers (who hated the original suit design), creates a new costume that's more battle-ready. This second costume is the one I saw and will the primary costume for the film.

The first thing I noticed is that the trademark wings that flank the side of Cap's hood are gone. In fact the "hood" is gone entirely. In its place is a more traditional M1 Army helmet though this helmet does come over the eyes to give Cap a traditional "domino mask" look. Still present is the white "A" in the middle of the hat (nothing fancy, this is the traditional font), though like the rest of the costume, the blue of the helmet is much more muted than the blue in the comic costume. A thick black strap comes down over the ears and connects under the chin.

Cap is wearing a blue neck piece but from what I saw, it's hard to tell if this is connected to something under the helmet or whether it's something like a turtleneck (I'm gonna guess the latter).

The many looks of Captain America

On his chest still lies the white star though it's not as prominent as the comic version. The costume is still split horizontally through the middle with blue on top and red and white stripes on the bottom. But instead of stripes, it's actually just a white base with two red utility straps acting as stripes. These straps affix to a metal loop at the midpoint of the chest and a black strap extends up to the shoulders from that point.

His shoulders have pads over them that extend down to about mid-bicep and are attached via a brown strap under the arm. The sleeves (for lack of a better word) are white with a fairly standard brown glove.

The fabric of the costume doesn't look like the scaled material of SPIDER-MAN but more of a leather fabric, like something you'd see on one of the X-MEN. Cap wears an old school utility belt, the likes of which we haven't seen much in modern superhero movies. Utility belts were a staple of comic superheroes but haven't made the transition but here Cap sports a rather thick belt made up of brown pockets with a silver buckle. (It actually looks something like the belt on this Captain America toy.)

As you might expect, there's no codpiece to be found and Cap is wearing blue pants tucked into brown utility boots. The pants aren't skin tight but they aren't baggy either. And for those who are curious, the pants actually have a fly so Cap can take a leak if he needs to.

The suit actually has a practical WWII military look to it with some of the obvious Captain America flourishes that we would expect. It's hard to really pass judgment on a costume until you see it properly lit, in motion and doing what it's meant to do. But based on what I saw, I'm pretty impressed with how they were able to adapt the costume for the film.

As for the shield, it actually hews very closely to the classic design of red/white/red rings with the white star in a blue circle at the middle.

Extra Tidbit: Any questions?

Sounds Great

I have complete faith that Marvel will get the look right. EVERYTHING they've done as a solo studio has looked great. Iron Man, War Machine, Hulk, Black Widow, Thor pic and Hammer... ALL perfection.

The only thing I like about the Ultimate Universe is the look of Cap. Can't wait to see the first official photos.

Hm... I hope it's just for this movie.

I hope this costume is only for this film, much like the WWII suit in Ultimates. I'm cool with this, it's practical, but hopefully once he's unfrozen they will give him a more traditional costume. I personally love the Ultimate Cap Modern Costume.

bad

Anyone, and I do mean anyone, who says Captain America would look silly wearing the winged cowl & all thats traditional with the costume as seen in the comics is stupid. Not real enough for a movie??? Come on, its supposed to be a fantasy movie/comic. You want "realism"?? Go check a generic action movie then!!!!!

sounds to me like

the folks who were bitchin earlier about the cap movie costume either don't have basic visualization skills and or a severe lack of imagination, never read an issue of ultimates or never stepped into a comic book store because if you had you would have seen ultimates as it's pretty damn popular or they're just people who want to complain for the sake of complaining.

Clothes make the man?

Hmmm. Well, it can't look any worse than poor Cap's other on-screen costumes. It never seemed like such a difficult costume to get right. I wonder if it just boils down to these people always having too damn much money to throw at these things -- I mean, remember all the screwing around with Superman's costume in the last movie, and there simply isn't a simpler, more iconic outfit than that -- it's almost impossible to screw up. And yet, they did.

What to wear.

In my opinion it would be best if they can make the costume as close as possible to the original. There would be a lot of spandex involved.

Nice

Glad to hear this. Comic fans know this is a positive for the franchise. He'll move on to the more common suit for Avengers, this suit has to look military and utilitarian as Hitch's designs for WWII Cap did.

Is that the genuine costume artist's rendering?

Because that's a bit of a let down if I'm honest.

The costume artist would've been more utilitarian than that. This looks like a fan creation done in 3D, as a direct response to the description in this article.

cap's costume is difficult!!

we have to remember that Captain America's costume is not easy to translate into film, but it sounds like a good beginning to the coming avengers film, which will probably show the ultimate avengers costume.we have to wait and see...

I honestly don't like the WWII costume for the costume after looking at some of the earlier pictures some of the guys posted. But looking at the pictures Guy posted, that design actually looks normal. Looks like it can work. Im going to leave my option open

Peh....

Not impressed by this. Cap is going to be the lynch pin here for the future of the Marvel characters, and needs to be done right.

After saying that I'll hold further judgement for later.

I'm upset that they haven't painted the wing shapes on the side.

Perhaps they just hadn't got round to that bit yet as it's only a costume test.

Or maybe they just looked daft.

A part of me still wants the traditional design with the wings, but I can understand if that makes it look too silly. It's difficult to make Cap look convincing on film.

All I can think about now is, did they _have_ to remove the wings in order to make it work? Is there no other way?

I'm pretty sure he'll have a more updated costume for the Avengers, this one sounds a bit hand made other than fabricated like the Iron Man suit, can't wait till Tony Stark gets his hands on the Captain America suit blueprints for an upgrade.

I have to see it first.

I LOVE Cap, and have been reading him forever, i even own the dvd of all his comics (till the point of the dvd). Before i get onboard with this i have to actually see it. I like the WW2 style and think it could suit the film, but Cap is the costume. He is wearing the flag - i loved his costume both now and as a kid (i am canadian btw), and i want the real costume. Why cant they do it? They did it in the superman movies (with reeve, not that garbage returns movie), i just dont get it. why

This sounds pretty good, and I'm optimistic about the design. My only complaint is the red stripes being replaced with straps.

There has yet to be an on-screen Cap Am costume that has looked good. They went completely faithful in one film and it sucked, and they went for a biker motif a la Evil Kneivel in another and it sucked. This will not go well.

We've seen the Batman costume go through many faithful and horrible translations but eventually someone gathered the right team to develop something really great in Nolan's films. I'm a little speculative too but at the same time the idea's really exciting.

How can anyone take this film serious with such a daft looking character. He has bloody angel wings for ears for starters lol.

Also...

Cap does not wear a Domino mask, Bucky does. What he wears is a mask commonly described as a cowl (like Batman). Pretty lame to have someone doing a costume review who can't even get basic descriptions right.

Be that as it may it was still the best we could get out of it. This is the first costume description and there will definitely be more. Either Sam was excited about the news and decided to write on it as best as he could or there was no time to spend for accurate research. We're not going to expect a fully detailed description. Just bear with it and wait for a pic.

Sounds like a mess

I expect a strong backlash from fans if this is true. People unfamilier with the character may like it, but it just sounds like an overcomplicated but dumbed down mish-mash, and trying to justify something that they don't really need to explain.

Sam described it the best way he could. I know it sounds complicated but we can't really judge until we see a picture. I'm pretty psyched about it but I'm holding my optimism until I see some proof.

I'm all for a WWII style costume in this but I also think we'll eventually see a more traditional Cap when he makes the jump to the modern day.

the suit is what makes our hero our hero.. all the recent comic book movie characters looked exactly like their comic books. Some minor tweaks here and there but basically the same thing. From the links posted below I guess it makes sense for a starter suit... but it should be/better be the suit we all know in The Avengers or the sequel.

Why?

Captain America wears the colors of the flag because he is a "symbol" of the United States. Utility straps instead of red stripes?!?! Its obvious that the people making this film have no respect for this character. The suit is SUPPOSED to look like the flag. He's the Sentinel of Liberty! It's sad to see how much people have lost respect for this country and it's heroes, both real and fictional.

Sort of but not really. The mask/helmet and torso design is much improved. I know it's confusing. I'll try to sketch out what it looks like and post.

It's not a huge change

they did the same thing in the comics flashbacks because his costume makes no sense in a war environment.
the ww2 movie costume will look just like the ww2 comic costume i.e. this:

I mean I don't mind them losing the wings but not making his dominantly patriotic and American just rubs my rhubarb the wrong way. I mean the guy represents America, the good and the bad, the right and wrong, it's purposes and it's convictions, it's principles and ideals, everything. What the fuck are they afraid of? Make him who he is.

They're not changing it much once you think about it. Just like lacon5 had said before, they're following the Ultimates costume design. Look here: [link]

So in a way they're actually being pretty faithful.

just google it

for those wondering about the look, just image search "WWII captain america" and you'll see what it will be like.
it sounds like followign the ultimates where cap has the old costume through the war and when he's unfrozen he gets the modern comic costume. sounds sweet as the classic comic costume would really seem out of place in the middle of world war 2

Sound cool

Captain America always seems to have an impressive upper body. Is there anything on the costume that would accentuate that? I have friends that don't think Evans is good for the role mainly because he is not built like him.

I have to say though, I am impressed with what you gave us. It sounds practical-very practical. And the look sounds like something the military would make to publicly show off and exploit to enemies, especially of that era.

Sample/Mock-up?

Is there any way you can whip-up a sketch/mockup/or composite of what the suit looks like in photoshop? I'm super confused between the description and the images posted...

@angershark

I'm not holding back, I just don't want to be too judgmental at this point. Trying to be more informative. Like I said at the end, I like it quite a bit but I'm more curious to see how it looks when it's lit properly and how it moves on camera.

Don't buy the idea it has to change to translate

I think many of the times they don't even try to translate it for film but rather start from scratch with a few logos still in place. There is a reason characters generally look the same over long spans of time, its because the design works. So just find a fabric that works and keep the design.

I don't like the sounds of the helmet, I like the old school utility belt. I don't know, all together it doesn't sound amazing.

@anomaly7

Meant straps not belts. He only has one utility belt. The vertical red straps are connected via buckle to the "shoulder pads" and essentially holding them on.

Thanks, that makes so much more sense. I thought maybe they were doing horizontal stripes instead of vertical, but the straps make sense.

hmmm. it sounds like Mike Sampson is holding off on saying 'the costume is amazing'...does that mean it sucks until proven otherwise in motion? skeptical at the moment.

3 utility belts?

2 red utility belts acting as stripes + another belt with brown pockets and a silver buckle? Did I read that right, because that is a lot of belts for one man. Aside from that, seems like it could work.
