Jack Black might not return as R.L. Stine in Goosebumps sequel

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

I loved GOOSEBUMPS as a kid. Weirdly, I kind of just collected them for their covers, rather than reading them. It was only later that I actually gave a few a look, and found them to be fun, light reads. Well, most of them. However, even though I had fond memories of the FOX Kids TV series (which…uh…don’t hold up…), I was wary about the GOOSEBUMPS film that came out a couple years ago. Especially with Jack Black in the lead, who hadn’t really been doing so hot at that point in his career (minus BERNIE).

However, I found myself pleasantly surprised! It was a fun, sweet movie with an actual emotional center that I’ll admit go to me in the eye-feels. And Black was actually really funny! He was a bit broad (and I’d argue if he was more subdued or deadpan the film would’ve benefited), but he certainly didn’t ruin it. I was looking forward to seeing what the sequel had to offer.

Unfortunately, according to Variety, there are many scripts floating around, and one in particular – from screenwriter Rob Lieber (PETER RABBIT) – doesn’t have Black’s character at all. While there’s no guarantee that version will be used as the final script, it is still interesting to note that Sony is prepared to do the film without him (possibly as a cost-cutting measure).

So what about you, Schmoes? You down for more GOOSEBUMPS? And if so, how would you feel about a sequel without Jack Black‘s blusterous R.L. Stine? Either way, sound off below!

Meanwhile, GOOSEBUMPS 2 should scare up theaters September 21st, 2018.
