Jada Pinkett Smith says she will not be back for season two of Gotham

03.06.2015

With a drove of villains introduced on the series, GOTHAM may be losing their lone original creation. Jada Pinkett Smith, who plays Fish Mooney on the FOX series, has explained that her time is about up on the Batman prequel. In an interview with Extra (via TV Line), Smith reiterated that her single season contract will expire at the conclusion of the show's debut run in a couple of months.

“We’re done, I did my year and I had a good time,” adding that Fish will go out with a bang. “The show is gonna [have] an awesome finale.”

The character of Fish Mooney is the only aspect of GOTHAM that does not have roots in a DC Comics creation. She has been a central focus for most of the season both in the Maroni/Falcone crime war and the development of Oswald Cobblepot from thug to crime lord. In recent episodes, Mooney has existed in an isolated story arc that involves Dr. Dulmacher (Colm Feore) and even saw the character prove her nature by gouging out her own eye.

Jada Pinkett Smith's performance rubbed many the wrong way but I have enjoyed her over the top take on the character. Not being based on an existing character also made Fish Mooney the most unpredictable part of GOTHAM. With the series already locked in for a second run in the Fall, it remains to be seen if they will be killing Fish off or leaving a return open in later years.

GOTHAM airs Mondays on FOX.

No surprise

Wasn't this the thought all along? The rumor coming out of Comic Con 2014 was that Mooney would die by end of the first season. Each season is about another villain's rise to super villainry. The question and answer: "What does a Penguin eat? Fish!" seemed to fall in line with this. It would seem likely that Penguin's final step to the big leagues is killing Fish Mooney. Now if the series can just get rid of the awful young Bruce Wayne sequences they may have something.

GOTHAM

TOTALLY UPSET ON HEARING ABOUT FISH MOONEY'S DEPARTURE. SHE'S ONE OF THE REASONS WHY I WATCH THE SHOW EVEN THOUGH SHE;S NOT A DC CHARACTER, I JUST LOVE HER ROLE AS A STRONG WOMAN WHO'S NOT AFRAID OF ANYTHING OR ANYONE.

Thank christ. Her detestable line delivery and overdone sssssslow speech made me instantly hate this character in every possible way. Like, I seriously felt the entertainment value of the show dropped when she was on screen, meaning the following section was forced to be responsible enough to return the show to something fun and watchable. But the ratio was never fair: 5 minutes of Fish Mooney means Gordon and Harvey then had to beat someone up, solve a crime, rescue a character we all know

...And this is usually when Fish fucking Mooney returns to the screen and leeches entertainment back from you, collecting it and storing it to never be shared with anyone, real or fiction.

...or you could just say Fish Mooney sucks.

I'm disappointed. This clears the way for her to appear in other things instead.

The show should go with it... one if the biggest disappointments of a show i have ever seen. I stopped watching after like 4 or 5 episodes, but had to tune in when they introduced The Joker... and seeing that episode solidified why i stopped watching it, almost as if the show was written by ppl who have ZERO interest in the Characters and just wanted a popular hook for a VERY run of the mill show.

Good she was fucking terrible in this. Her overacting hamminess was a terrible fit for this show. She would have been fine for an episode or two, a glorified cameo, to introduce the penguin. However the fact that her terribleness stood out among an already terrible show speaks volumes. The sooner she is gone the better. There is so little good in this show, losing her ass will give them a chance to concentrate more on what little is good (Bullock and Penguin and the mob battles). I might

Probably not a bad thing. I don't mind the show for the most part particularly the casting which I think is great but man they introduce their villains in a shockingly anticlimactic way. The way they've jammed so many of the rogues into one season feels a bit desperate...I'm hoping they have something great up their sleeves...

Glad to see her go

There are lots of scenery chewing actors and actresses. Some do it and are phenomenal, some just show a one-note style. Pinkett is the latter..sort of like Master Thespian (ACTING!!)

Sad to hear Fish is going to sleep with the fishes.

I am no Batman expert so I enjoy this show for what it is. That said, for me the only time the show comes alive is when Fish or Oswald are on screen. Fish can be over the top but she is at least entertaining to watch. The show runners really should have cast a different actor as Gordon. Ben McKenzie was good on Southland but he is miscast here. He's bland in the role especially when acting against the great Donal Logue.

Fish Mooney will go through a physical tranformation and will be played by another actor or actress. The last episode showed that the doctor shes with is capable of transforming a male with a female body. Fish will ultimately become a DC villian, just not in her current form, presumably someone with blue eyes

The show is so much going into all the wrong directions, you're probably right. They will probably change COMPLETELY the origins of a DC villain, a La Poison Ivy, with her...

also: GORDON needs a major villain to fight....

AND NOT one of Batman's villains... somebody new... somebody BAD that he and his partner can go toe to toe with during the entire season.

i liked her character BUT...

after she goudged out her own eyeball and stepped on it so that Jeffery Coombs (Frighteners) wouldnt get her eyes (at least a matching set) it seemed that either 1) she'd do all or most of next season with an eye patch or 2) she'd be dead.... very dead.
and not liking any spoilers linked to Gotham, she's a goner... thanks Jada for ruining the surprise for us... you rule.
also as she spelled out that her character would go out with a bang, and that the season finale would have an awesome

Annnnnnd

Neither will I.

I've heard others say it - it speaks volumes that there are Batman nerds who will consume all Batman stuff, like myself, but didn't even give this a chance. I heard Harvey Dent was an adult? How is he considerably older than Bruce?

yeah Harvey was a district attorney. He even flipped the coin during his brief stint on the show (one episode)
its tough to do a prequel... I mean, all of Batman's villains are around his same age... on Gotham he's TEN freakin years old.... FOX would have to create some villains for uh.... you know... GORDON to fight instead of introducing us to all of BRuce Wayne's (Little Wayne) arch nemesis's to fight.
I switched to Supernatural, Flash and I still need to watch Constantine.

its a typical cop show... we've see it in the 70s... it was called Starsky and Hutch
all this show needs is its own Huggy Bear.

Getting out while the getting's good?

Given the reviews Gotham's been getting from this site and others, I'll be surprised if it makes it to a second or third season.

BTW: a "dearth" means a lack of something. Try a "plethora" or "an excess of" if that's what you're trying to say.
