Jaimie Alexander talks Lady Sif and missing out on being Wonder Woman

02.17.2016

One of the great things about the Marvel Cinematic Universe is that its secondary characters can be just as great as the main ones. The world of Asgard is full of great characters, including Jaimie Alexander's Lady Sif. Alexander is set to reprise the role in the upcoming THOR: RAGNAROK alongside Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, and Mark Ruffalo, and although Lady Sif hasn't exactly had the opportunity to become as fleshed out as I would like, Jaimie Alexander revealed in a recent interview with Variety that she genuinely loves stepping into Lady Sif's armour.

I genuinely love the character Sif. Each time I get to play her, there’s this growth in the character and we find out more of who she is. That is a blast, because I’ve been able to slowly create this woman while still taking directions from all the comic books that existed before my performance. It’s interesting that Sif has such a big backstory, whereas Jane has no backstory at all; they’re very opposite while at the same time both very tough and vulnerable. It’s a bit of a niche for me, I guess.

When the search began for the perfect actress to play Wonder Woman, Jaimie Alexander was at the top the list for many fans. Obviously she didn't end up getting the role of Wonder Woman in BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, but she's not exactly bitter about losing out to Gal Gadot.

I’m excited to see what she’s going to do with the role. I was one of a few people that were an obvious choice for Wonder Woman, but it was never going to happen. I’m contracted with Marvel and it would (be) strange. Sif, in her way, is Marvel’s Wonder Woman. They’re both ethereal and have armor and a sword, and have special abilities; the physicality of the role is very similar. The thing I really enjoy about Marvel is that they start with a character first and all the explosions and costumes, the glitz and glam, are secondary to who the actual character is deep down. That’s something I haven’t really been able to find with DC Comics. I know that’s a bold statement, but it’s been my experience.

THOR: RAGNAROK is set for a November 3, 2017 release and BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE will hit theaters on March 25, 2016.

Would you have prefered to see Jaimie Alexander as Wonder Woman, or did Warner Bros make the right choice with Gal Gadot?

Still have no idea what Gal Gadot is going to be like as Wonder Woman. Everybody is basing their dislike of her character on literally seconds of trailer time. Give her the shot.

I don't think anyone's fooling themselves that Sif is a more important character than Wonder Woman. Sure if you're playing a specific role you become more invested in it, but as we've not really seen anything much from Gadot's WW yet it's probably a little soon to be saying there's a lack of depth to her character.

agreed. Its way too soon to cast Gadot out as wonder woman. Everybody's basing their judgements on literally seconds of trailer time.

In other news, Jeremy Renner hasn't been offered the role of Green Arrow and Jason Momoa hasn't been offered the role of Namor the Submariner.

"the character deep down"

Yeah, Sif is super deep with all of her 12 minutes of total screentime across two movies..

Yes. Jaimie Alexander made that much of an impression in 12 minutes. That's what we call "great acting."

The thing is, if she hadn't played Lady Sif it's less likely that anyone would have thought of her for the role of Wonder Woman. While she has played tough characters before, she was still a relatively unknown actress and it's only from Thor that we noticed she look good in armor.

I'm not disappointed that she didn't get the Wonder Woman gig; from the footage we've seen, Gadot looks perfect.

And do we really need someone else from Marvel taking a shot at DC in how they portray their characters and vice versa???

Agreed, on both points. Not sure what this snarkiness between the MCU and DCCU is supposed to gain anybody. Not like it's gonna increase or reduce box office for either.

If she hadn't been Lady Sif, she'd be perfect for Wonder Woman. Nevertheless, she breaths life into Lady Sif perfectly.
