by: Dave Davis Aug. 11, 2008

The movie's release date may have been pushed back to 2010, but that hasn't prevented Jake Gyllenhaal from getting into enviable physical shape for the production of PRINCE OF PERSIA, currently shooting in Morocco.

Mike Newell (HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE, DONNIE BRASCO) is directing the flick, based on the popular videogame series. I haven't played any of the games since the original side-scroller, which resulted in many plunges into spiked pits, but I assume the movie will have plenty of daring leaps, sword fights, mystical happenings, and sand.

Just Jared caught some pics of Jake on the set in half-costume, click to check 'em out!

Extra Tidbit: Is it me or does Jake look a bit more scruffy barbarian than Persian royalty?

As with any project though it depends largely on the talent involved. Newell directed Goblet of Fire which managed to be not only a financial and critical success but also please most of the fans; while Harry Potter may be a world apart from Prince of Persia it still shows that he knows how to handle a good adaptation.

movies made from games do more harm than good I feel...almost all of the time they get crappy budgets, directors (Uwe Boll to name one)and cast...even something like this with the great cast and the budget and the people behind it...the story still gets watered down for 90 or 100 minutes from the long hours it took you to beat that game...if they were to make features out of an interactive...

And does he bend or reverse time like in the game?? cause you lose the fundamentals of the game you lose out in the theatre watching Jake "should have been Spidey" Gyllenhaal prancing around and just stabbin people

I actually think this film has quite a lot going for it. Its got a solid supporting cast, I mean Ben Kingsley and Alfred Molina? That's a huge step up from Uwe Boll or Paul W.S. Anderson crap. Plus its being directed by Mike Newell, an incredibly versatile director who's made such awesome films as Donnie Brasco and Enchanted April. The final draft of the screenplay was written by Carlo Bernard...

Plus its being directed by Mike Newell, an incredibly versatile director who's made such awesome films as Donnie Brasco and Enchanted April. The final draft of the screenplay was written by Carlo Bernard and Doug Miro who wrote the underrated war movie, The Great Raid. To top it all of the film's got a $150 million budget which is about three times as big as most of these movies get. Put it all together and it looks like this could be a pretty decent film.

I'm not trying to say this'll do for videogame movies what TDK or Iron Man have done for comics, but hey you've got to coem out with your Spider-Man's and Hellboy's first and work your way up, right?

I'm not a Jake Gyllenhaal fan, but you have to give the dude credit. He definitely looks the part and got into some great shape for the role. Whether the movie is good or not is another story!

Jake definitely looks the part, let's just hope it's not a dissapointing script he's dealing with. Other than that, bring it the f*ck on!!

P.S.: Dave, could you put up an image of Warrior Within or Two Thrones instead of that sh*tty Sands of Time one... the resemblance might be more visible. Peace!

So let me get this straight. It's alright for Angelina Jolie to play an Indian, or lets say, Cate Blanchett to play a FUCKING GUY, a Russian etc etc. But Jake can't play a Persian? I really dont understand all the dislike.

Why is it okay for people who arent American to play American but its not okay for Americans to play something different.

Either way, look at that above picture. Thats the motherfucking Prince of Persia. With this and Max Payne, it seems video game adaptations might actually get some love.

Wow, I didn't believe in Jake at all for that role, but this picture shows: He looks fucking awesome and exactly as he should be for that character. Great stuff.

Now wait one minute
Sure, Jake wouldn't be my first pick but he's an awesome actor (Moonlight Mile, Rendition, Zodiac) and can pull off physical roles (Jarhead), so what's the problem? Yes, it would have been better for them to cast an ethnic actor, but is it really a surprise that the studio instisted on an A-Lister for this big of a project (and unfortunately there aren't exactly an abundance of arab actors that...

Besides there are much, much worst people that they could have cast instead of Jake: Matthew McConaughey, Paul Walker, Hayden Christensen, a wrestler turned "actor" like John Cena or Dwayne Johnson (hey, he's already worked with Disney), some young punk from the OC or Gossip Girl. See all of the sudden Gyllenhaal doesn't seem so bad does he?

Ugh...
I really hate it...

But then again, maybe I will be more supportive of him being in the role when the movie finally does come out.

I'm sure I will say "Gah, he's terrible" now, but come 2010, after I watch this movie, I will be thinking "Wow, I don't think I can picture anyone else taking the role :O"

They could have picked someone better, for...

I've never played any of the Prince of Persia games, so I don't know what the Prince sounds like, but I think Jake's voice is too soft and sweet. He sounds like a baby. Unless he can achieve some fierce octaves, I don't think Jake fits the bill. Also, he doesn't look ethnic enough.

But in the end, I don't really give a shit. I'm not even a fan of the games, and I couldn't care...

He looks fit; Certainly in better shape than myself.

I never really played the games, just one about a decade ago, so I'm all for Jake as 'the Prince'.

Just wish he'd waxed his chest for the role.

omg yes, finally a pic. Listen for those who don't know like the guy who posted this, apparently they decided to go with the look the prince has in "The Warrior Within", which is a lot darker than the "Sands of Time". Honestly i would have preferred someone else but i like Jake and well nothing much we can do now. i cant wait to start seeing more stuff for this movie, sucks i gotta wait another...

"Enviable physical shape"? Looks kinda flabby to me. He was in better shape for JARHEAD. And I can't help but agree with dreamfall below.

I don't see the Prince of Persia in that pic anywhere.
