suicide squad

Last week it was reported that Tom Hardy had dropped out of Warner Bros. upcoming SUICIDE SQUAD. He was set to take the role of Rick Flag, the Squad's leader. While rumors circulated about the real reason behind Hardy's departure, another name was thrown into the mix, Jake Gyllenhaal.

Well the team is still a member short as Variety reports that Jake Gyllenhaal has passed on the role. The movie is going into production this spring and still currently stars Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, Jai Courtney and Cara Delevingne, with David Ayer directing.

So back to the drawing board as they say; who will fill in the role of Rick Flag on the superhero team? We will update you when there’s more information.

SUICIDE SQUAD will be released August 5, 2016.

Good. He's peaking. If anything, he should be Joker

The script must really suck and this character must really be poorly written

All of the rumors must be true about how poorly this movie is written. Especially the dumb twist with the character that nobody seems to want.

Shame Hardy is out

Gyllenhaal was always a hard catch , he is in the stage of his career where he wants to do work like Nightcrawler, Prisoners and Enemy. How about Joel Egerton or Eric Bana? Both Aussies but both muscular and intimidating when they need to be.

Gyllenhaal as Spiderman

I'd rather see him play a larger role in the superhero world, would love him to become marvels spiderman if that ever happens

10 Realistic Choices

Ayer wrote Training Day and, although it's a tenuous connection, I'd be genuinely excited if he brought on Ethan Hawke to fill the role. Hawke's done a lot to boost his commercial appeal and his genre appeal over the past few years with Sinister and The Purge, and this would help him get on the serious actor turned action star bandwagon a la Liam Neeson and Sean Penn. Although with American Sniper's massive opening (also a WB film) I really think Bradley Cooper is the obvious of obvious

Although with American Sniper's massive opening (also a WB film) I really think Bradley Cooper is the obvious of obvious choices, yet his schedule is so full I don't see it happening, that leaves the following as viable choices:

Richard Armitage - He just did the Hobbit films for the studio and this could help establish him as a genuine star.

Lee Pace - He had a less prominent, but still recognizable role in The Hobbit, and is also coming off the heals of GotG.

Colin Farrel - This seems like a pretty generic Colin Farrel role, and he'd provide a recognizable name for pretty cheap.

Joel Kinnaman - He just did "Run All Night" for the studio. He seems at that point where the studios could try to push him Josh Lucas style to be a leading man before he's really earned it.

Taylor Kitsch - The fans would probably hate this but, like Jai Courtney's casting, it just seems very studio mentality-ish.

Sam Worthington - Similar to the above, I could see them mistakenly expecting this to get the fans excited.

Charlie Hunnam - He's done Pacific Rim and Crimson Peake back to back for the studio and seems prime for leading man / comic book status.

Jon Bernthal - Ayer just worked with him on Fury and his star has steadily been on the rise.

Would love to see a Michael jai white, or someone with gravitas and machismo in the role.

I wonder if there's a glaring issue with the way the role is written or if its bad timing for both actors and they just need to find someone who can fit it in their schedule.

Or if they both just decided it's a dumb idea with too many bad actors to succeed.

Coming off of Prisoners, Nightcrawler, and Southpaw, I could see Gyllenhaal seeing this as a step back. Who knows though

I would def think that Gyl didn't even consider this. I was surprised Hardy signed on.

You guys do realize actors pass on roles all the time. It doesn't mean the script sucks or it's badly written. God you fucktards are stupid.

I actually love that choice. But sadly they won't choose him because he's not high profile enough for them more than likely.

Hey, thanks.

He can easily hold his own against anyone in the cast though.

I second that. Neal McDonough is underrated and would be a good fit for the role.

I'm guessing someone dependable like McDonough would be fairly ideal. The problem with both Hardy and Gyllenhaal is they are fantastic actors on a winning streak. Based on my admittedly slight knowledge of the Suicide Squad, it seems like Rick Flag might be the most ordinary person in the whole movie. Having a less-famous actor play the role might be the smarter move.

I love this idea. Amazing actor, though not a huge name like Hardy and Gyllenhaal. It might also be a problem that he plays a character in the MCU. Though that character is only during WW2 and the odds of him appearing again outside of Agent Carter is slim.
