James Cameron anoints Shawn Levy to direct Fantastic Voyage

02.07.2011

James Cameron the director might be brainstorming about Pandora's various moons right now for the AVATAR sequels, but James Cameron producer is busy throwing his weight around behind various projects.

His most recent effort was SANCTUM, which featured underwater cameras so naturally he must be involved, and now he's found a director for his next EP project, FANTASTIC VOYAGE.

Darren Aronofksy, Timur Bekmambetov and Jonathan Moscow all met with Cameron about the project, and previously Paul Greengrass and Louis Leterrier had been attached. So who did Cameron go with?

Shawn Levy of NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM and CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN fame. Say wha?

The film is said to be mostly CGI, and Levy has experience with that after recently helming REAL STEEL with Hugh Jackman, and the film is supposed to be a family affair, which makes sense with his other projects. What, you thought a movie about a ship traveling through a human body would be a R-rated sex/gore fest?

What do you think about Levy as the choice here?

Extra Tidbit: Remember OSMOSIS JONES? That movie ruled.

Considering what he did with the mostly inoffensive "Night at the Museum," and that "Real Steel" looks surprisingly intriguing for its premise. I won't kill myself if this turns out to be a turd. Nor will I see it unless I feel properly motivated. But it could be worse.

The fact that it's not Leterrier is a plus. But Levy's style is blander than tofu. So far I'm glad about who it's not, and have no interest in who it's am.

Shawn Levy makes interesting, entertaining movies. Not the best choice for something like this, but I could see why Cameron chose him for a movie like this.

Yeah, there a re better choices, and worse. At least it will look nice, the rest depends on the script I suppose.

Dodged A Bullet

People can hate on Shawn Levy all they want, but the man delivers slick, professional CGI-heavy entertainment for the whole family time and time again.

Louis Leterrier SUCKS. He takes what could be really awesome genre action films and renders them bland as shit.

How does this guy keep getting work? Oh yeah, people keep paying to see his shit. Paul Greengrass could have been awesome, I would even have taken Leterrier....
