James Cameron confirms he will begin developing Battle Angel in 2017, after completing Avatar 3

Jul. 5, 2013by:

James Cameron had previously said the he only envisioned working on AVATAR for the foreseeable future. With the confirmation that AVATAR 2 and AVATAR 3 would be coming, we all but assumed that Cameron's long in development BATTLE ANGEL would fall by the wayside. That does not appear to be the case and we actually have a date to look forward to.

At the TagDF forum in Mexico City, Cameron said he plans to begin developing BATTLE ANGEL in 2017 while he is in post-production on AVATAR 3. This will be an opportunity for the filmmaker to shift his focus from developing new movie technology and to focus on character and story. This is something of a surprise because not only does it cement that he feels he will be done with the two AVATAR sequels within 4 years.

BATTLE ANGEL will be based on the BATTLE ANGEL ALITA manga that tells the story of Alita, a cyborg who has lost all memories and is found in a garbage heap by a cybernetics doctor who rebuilds and takes care of her. She discovers that there is one thing she remembers, the legendary cyborg martial art Panzer Kunst, which leads to her becoming a Hunter Warrior or bounty hunter. The story traces Alita's attempts to rediscover her past and the characters whose lives she impacts on her journey.

From his comments, it sounds as if Cameron has developed enough technology to make BATTLE ANGEL a reality. I am looking forward to what the director will be bringing to the AVATAR sequels. I enjoyed the first film and it remains the sole 3D experience I have found worthwhile at the movies. There have been many critics of the current 3D boom which many consider lackluster and trace back to AVATAR. Cameron addressed the use of post-conversion 3D in movies at the same forum:

One thing is shooting in 3D and another is to convert to 3D...If you spend $150 million on visual effects, the film is already going to [look] spectacular [and] perfect.

Well, at least he admits there is a time and a place for 3D. I just gained new respect for him!

I really don't need two more Avatar films, I'm good with one.

I've heard this before. James Cameron is one of my favorite directors but he's been saying that he was going to make Battle Angel Alita for years and was supposed to do it 10 years ago. I don't buy 2017 as the start date and by the time he gets around to getting it off the ground he may be too old. [link]

"If you spend $150 million on visual effects, the film is already going to [look] spectacular [and] perfect.
If by "spectacular" and "perfect" you mean "cartoonish" and "quickly dated." It saddens me that Cameron will probably never make another movie that isn't on a motion capture stage. Avatar will look terrible pretty quickly. The opening scene of T2 with all the miniatures and actual sets still holds up 20+ years later.

Honestly, how un-rewatchable is Avatar compared to Cameron's other movies? Unobtainium... bollocks. Get on with something new already!

If there was ever a movie that needed Cameron to make it, it is Battle Angel Alita. Epic sci-fi that's a blend of The Terminator & Mad Max.
Too bad we have to wait through 2 more Avatar movies before Cameron gets back to doing dark adult oriented sci-fi again.

James Cameron, the thinking man's Michael Bay.

I don't know what everyone is bitching about, Avatar was great. And I don't know of any other major blockboster director who writes his own screenplays. Hell, I just recently found out that he's the sole writer of both Titanic and Avatar (i.e. nr. 1 and 2 top grossing films of all time).

World war 2 is actual history that can be drawn from. But it'd take more than my little piggies and yours combined to count the number of bad WW2 movies.
It may be easy to write a script, whether based on an actual event or not. However, writing one and filming it in such a way that it eventually garners billions of bucks and tons of awards requires a wee bit of skill.

Pretty easy to write screenplays to two movies where the story has already been done for you. Titanic you've got actual history to draw from and avatar you have about a dozen, or more, movies with the same damn story line

Used to like his sci-fi action thriller films before he started forcing lame romantic love stories into his films to make them more universal boxoffice friendly.like to see Alita as a pure sci-fi action thriller like Aliens,T2

I wish he would do Battle Angel first before making any more Avatar. Hollywood really needs new franchises instead of sequels right now.
Also, Emma Watson as Alita. Mostly because I think she's still kind of an underrated young actress and partly because I see her face in COOL EXTERNAL LINKS and thought she'd look cute with short, black hair wielding a machine gun arm :p
One of the obvious choices for Alita of course is Ellen Page, but I'd rather not.

I wouldn't mind seeing Emma Watson as Alita, but I think it would be best if Cameron cast an Asian or Eurasian actress, just to keep the world satiated.
Also, you know who REALLY looks identical to Alita? AnnaSophia Robb. Just give her Alita's black hairdo, and she is the absolute spitting image of Alita - and she's not even Asian.

I have conflicting emotions about this. On one hand, I don't have faith in James Cameron anymore. On the other hand, I still want a Battle Angel movie. And on my 3rd hand (yes, I have 3 hands), I think Neill Blomkamp has already filled the Battle Angel hole with Elysium.
I hope Cameron doesn't fuck it up, but if he does, I really don't care either way. I can easily not see the movie if the cast, trailers, and plot look like shit.

This guy comes around once a year to say he will take a few more years to develop Battle Angel and finish the Avatar trilogy no one really wants. I wish he would just shut up and make this movie, hopefully Avatar bombs.

This is exactly the problem wit Hollywood today. Avatar does well and instead of leaving it on a high note, he wants more $$$ I mean sequels to finish of his series. Avatar was okay at best, that's it. The scenery was fantastic. the characters not so much. It seems his ego is getting too big. At least Michael Bay knows he has a large ego. Sometimes it feels like these directors lost the foundation of what made movie magic. It's not the best hi-tech animation or 3d, you need more than that. Lost

Cameron is a good filmmaker. Terminator, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Aliens, The Abyss, True Lies, Titanic....he's got a remarkable track record. Yeah, he comes across as pretty egotistical, but I think when compared to someone like Michael Bay, he's earned the right to be a little cocky. Avatar was a superlative technical achievement even if it wasn't the most original story ever told. The thing is, when he came out to say "I'm only doing Avatar movies from now on", it reminded me of George

I hope he does do different things now and again.

awesome

I want the Avatar trilogy. Everybdoy bitches about it not being original, while only about 1% of what comes out of Hollywood is original. It was still a highly entertaining movie. I am looking forward to the sequels. And Battle Angel!

Does anyone even care anymore?

He switches dates on his projects more often than he changes underpants. On top of that we have to wait years for his flicks to come out and then they're not all that anyhow. I miss Cameron from the 80s!

Cameron is my favorite director, so I'm down with whatever he wants to direct over the next 5 years.
