James Cameron on Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity: "I think it's the best space film ever done"

09.04.2013

Some great reviews for GRAVITY recently came in from the Venice Film Festival, and now the one and only James Cameron has shared his thoughts on the film. While filming GRAVITY, Alfonso Cuaron contacted Cameron about making sure the 3D in his movie would be perfect, and about a month ago screened the film for Cameron. Here's what Cameron had to say about GRAVITY to Variety:

I was stunned, absolutely floored. I think it’s the best space photography ever done, I think it’s the best space film ever done, and it’s the movie I’ve been hungry to see for an awful long time.

Many might assume James Cameron is geeking out just because of how the film looks visually, but Cameron says he's more impressed with Sandra Bullock's performance in the film:

"She’s the one that had to take on this unbelievable challenge to perform it. (It was) probably no less demanding than a Cirque du Soleil performer, from what I can see.” And of the result, he says, “There’s an art to that, to creating moments that seem spontaneous but are very highly rehearsed and choreographed. Not too many people can do it. … I think it’s really important for people in Hollywood to understand what was accomplished here.”

Sandra Bullock's casting seems to be the one thing about GRAVITY that has rubbed some movie fans the wrong way, but I think she'll be outstanding. Like many of you, I've been waiting a long time for Alfonso Cuaron's next film and GRAVITY should be a triumphant return for the talented director.

GRAVITY floats into theaters on October 4th, 2013.

Extra Tidbit: Alfonso Cuaron has worked on a franchise before with Harry Potter, so how about him directing a comic book movie? What character would you like to see him tackle?

It's funny how someone compliments something (that already looks incredible) and gets shit on for said compliment. Apparently the person who made the top grossing movies ever can't be a little excited about an exciting looking film. Stop being so butthurt.

Cuaron is a genius but Cameron's praise seems more than a little hyperbolic. I very much hope he's right, but I don't really trust Cameron to judge such things. His own films have gotten worse, in my opinion, since True Lies. I appreciate the visual spectacle of his work in Titanic and Avatar but the stories are paint by number. He has become obsessed with the tech. His undersea documentary work is much more interesting.

Hopefully Cuaron can bring out something from Clooney. Him and Bullock are pretty bland. He's a good director.

I agree. He's a good director, and seems like a cool guy, but not a great actor. Nor is she a great actress. I guess we'll see.

she will be outstanding???

what, just like every movie she has been in kind of "outstanding? she will stand out for sure but it wont be for her acting, well actually it might be from her lack of it. Still holding out hope her annoying voice and lack of skill doesnt deter from what looks to be an awesome movie

Cathelotte is right. The film will be great, but will be another box office failure. Another "nail" in the original idea "coffin" for us film fans.

Another great movie that will bomb at the BO, because it's not a franchise...
I SO hope I'm wrong...
Unrelated note : I've seen SNOWPIERCER yesterday (the REAL, as in NOT butchered by the Weinstein)...YET ANOTHER great movie that is, probably, going to bomb...

Considering it probably won't even get a major release, I would be surprised if many people even know it exists. It's had next to no promotion in the US.

Not really sure what to think about it. There were about a dozen actresses who were offered the part before Bullock got it, so she was hardly the first choice, which is never a very good sign, but hey, you never know.

When I see Cameron heaping praise on something that uses his beloved 3D ,he was consulted with about and hes trying to push 3D on everybody, I tend to question if his ego plays a part in his review. Not saying the movie looks bad, I just wonder if Cameron may be a little biased

I hope she performs well.

If the reaction to her is negative, maybe it's like mine. My attitude is that she *can* act well - but she's also really annoying sometimes. I think there's a playful attitude of the effect "I hope Ms. Congeniality suffocates in space." Personally - I want her to knock it out of the park - because I can't see the movie being good without her being good *in* it.

High praise indeed. I've gotta admit, it's nice seeing filmmakers say kind things about other films. It's natural to focus on statements that bait controversy when there are a good number of people in the industry willing to give kudos to their peers.
