James Cameron takes Avatar to the world of Cirque Du Soleil

May. 29, 2014by: Sean Wist

James Cameron is a director I'll always respect.  I mean, the guy knows how to make a film from a business standpoint.  I think that's admirable, to a degree.  As far as AVATAR is concerned, I enjoyed it for what it was.  And in a world where studios are trying to launch franchises left and right, no franchise feels more forced (from a story perspective) than Avatar.  The movie is the highest grossing of all time, so that's all the studios need to pump out three more sequels.  That's obviously all Disney needed to start construction on a Pandora section of Disney's Animal Kingdom, and it's all Cirque Du Soleil needs to team up with Cameron and create some sort of Avatar themed show.  There aren't many details now, except that the show will tour in late 2015, before the sequels hit theaters.

How much do you think that the actual theme park will NOT look like this?

I'm actually not one to bash AVATAR, but I'm awfully curious to see how its sequel will do.  The end of the first left many wondering where they could take it without repeating some of the story elements from the original.  If AVATAR 2 flops (unlikely), where would that leave its sequels?  On the other hand, the last time James Cameron did a sequel, we got TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY.  I don't know if you've seen that, but it's pretty cool.

Again, the Avatar-themed Cirque Du Soleil show will tour late 2015, with AVATAR 2 looking at a December 2016 release, AVATAR 3 in December 2017 and AVATAR 4 in 2018.

Extra Tidbit: Has anyone here seen a Cirque Du Soleil show?

Avatar didn't feel forced to me at all, and I'm excited for the sequels, I'll be there opening weekend for anything this guy puts out! Avatar was great, can't wait for more!!

This sounds like something MadTV would have come up with back in the day. I do love arena shows (the Walking with Dinosaurs one is spectacular) but you can't help but chuckle hearing of a Cirque adaptation of Avatar.

To quote Will Ferrell from Blades of Glory - "Hey, where did you learn that move? Cirque Du So Lame?" Hahaha.

Avatar isn't a bad movie at all, but after one viewing in the theater I thought "Well, that was fun" and really never had any desire to see it again. I was pretty surprised it got as big as it did, especially since it's a mish-mash of a dozen other sci-fi properties and has paper thin characterization. It will be interesting to see if Cameron can pull off a second wave of Avatar-mania with theme parks, etc. half a decade after we last had any new material.

Same here. I waited a whole year after the first bare-bone Blu Ray to get the actual Blu Ray that has the movie and special features. But after just one viewing, it's "Well, that was fun" for me as well and I haven't revisited the movie since.

Please, let's bash Avatar!

The problem with Avatar isn't necessarily the movie itself. It is what it is. I enjoyed it, it's a decent enough flick. The problem is that their isn't much behind the veil. No one is asking for sequels to this movie, let alone shows and theme parks. The world just wasn't rich enough to warrant it. But Cameron is so obsessed with having his own Star War/LOTR legacy that he's just shoving this down our throat. It's a shame, because the man is so super talented I actually would prefer to see him

I loved Avatar. Not Cameron's best, but it is a great experience, even on a 2D TV screen. This was Cameron's goal with the film, and he achieved it.

That said, I'm not excited for the sequels. I not excited because I feel the original film was enough. I don't see the Avatar universe going anywhere interesting. Hopefully I'm wrong, but Cameron should have went ahead with Battle Angel.

So With Zoe tied up with Avatar for the next year and a half or two

what does that mean for her role in Guardians 2 if they decide to pursue it?

If that happens Marvel won't blink twice about replacing her. It's what they're known for, sadly.

Nothing against Zoe, but I personally don't think those are big shoes to fill.
