James Cameron talks a little about Avatar 2, the 3D craze, and more

Feb. 19, 2010by: George Merchan
Yes, more James Cameron-related stuff. What can I say? Dude's hot.

MTV got a chance to sit down with director and talk about a whole bevy of subjects, including AVATAR 2, the Spidey reboot, a little bit about the Batman franchise, the Oscars, how Hollywood's f*cking up on the current 3D craze, and a few other things.

Below, I'm embedding the stuff on AVATAR 2 because it confirms that the same characters from the first film will be returning for the sequel, as well as the video regarding 3D since that is the hot topic of the moment.

To check out all the videos (nine total), head over to MTV.

Extra Tidbit: Cheers to Cameron for speaking up on the 3D thing.

I respect the hell out of James Cameron, the man is clearly dedicated to what he does for his own reasons. I love that he spoke up about 3D and the futility of merely converting a film into some sort of 3D veneer rather than do what he did. I have yet to speak to a single person who likes the idea of practically every other major movie being 3D so I seriously doubt it will last. Yes, he's everywhere right now but so what? The man has come up with the two biggest films in history, he fucking

I,for one, am pretty stoked about Avatar 2 and I have no doubt Cameron knows that it could very possibly take over as the biggest movie of all time and that would make three in a row. He get's my money, with a huge childish grin on my face.

I agree with Cameron on the 3D craze. I would be ok with a handful of movies getting a 3D release each year, but I don't want every blockbuster to be 3D from now on just b/c the studio wants to make some extra cash. Like Cameron said, you have to do it the right way. Harry Potter never needed 3D, I don't think it is necessary. And personally I think I liked the visuals of Avatar more because of IMAX than the 3D.

I have to admit...

I hated Avatar and I do hate 3D (to me it's a lame excuse to cash in more money without having the need to develop a real story and strong characters)... but still, I totally agree with the man in terms of saying that if that's the way you want to make a film, then do it right from the beginning.

You want to make it visually fun... then sure.. go ahead.. but do it from the get-go! Not try to "adapt" it later on when you see someone else's work become a success.

Still, I wish JC would go

Still, I wish JC would go grittier and darker alas Terminator and Aliens... Battle Angel Alita maybe Jim? I know you still got it in you!

For all the 3D haters out there, listen up...Cameron hears you and agrees! He does 3D the right way, and hates the idea of upconvesion. It's not a "money-gimmick" for him, it's a way to add to his artform. So please, stop whining about it.

Nice...

I hope the story really revolves around the characters... But I don't know, I think it's safe to say that we trust him. So bring on whatever you think will satisfy us JC!

Ps. I hate how people tend to forget that this is a MOVIE SITE and that JC is, in fact, a MOVIE DIRECTOR (and a successful one at that). People, if you read James Cameron in the title, SKIP IT! Don't read it just to talk shit about it!!!

KEEP EM' COMING!

Get over it. A post of an interesting interview with one of the world's most famous directors is definitely appropriate. Why on earth would you bother reading (let alone complain about) an article clearly labeled to be something your not interested in. Next time spare everyone us your negativity and check out something else.

Thanks for the interview George.. I think Cameron was right on the money with his 3D comments.
