James Cameron to write an Avatar prequel novel?

02.17.2010

I've come to expect that I'm gonna be known as that guy who didn't love AVATAR. The movie's on track to make James Cameron the next Scrooge McDuck, it was nominated for 9 Academy Awards and has turned 3D from a gimmick to a much more widely used gimmick. I have to accept that, as was the case with LORD OF THE RINGS, I just missed the boat on this one. That said, I can't imagine anything more laborious than reading an AVATAR novel.

To get things straight, I didn't hate AVATAR. I'd probably have given it a 6/10 if I was writing a review. I appreciated the visuals for what they were but the story was just lacking in almost every way. So why would I want to read 400 pages of more story? Dunno, but I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who do so James Cameron is stepping behind the typewriter to crank out a new book.

"Jim is going to write a novel himself," producer Jon Landau told MTV. He made clear this wasn't going to be a novelization (that, I'm pretty sure, already exists) but an original prequel story that "fills in a lot of things" and will give a "foundation to the world."

Landau explains, "It would be something that would lead up to telling the story of the movie, but it would go into much more depth about all the stories that we didn't have time to deal with — like the schoolhouse and Sigourney teaching at the schoolhouse; Jake on Earth and his backstory and how he came here; [the death of] Tommy, Jake's brother; and Colonel Quaritch, how he ended up there and all that..."

I'll tell you what...I wasn't a big fan of the story in the movie but never once did I say to myself, "Boy I wish I had more backstory on what was going on with Sigourney Weaver at that schoolhouse." To each his own though. I've never read a STAR WARS or STAR TREK novel either and those seem wildly popular. Landau adds he expects the novel to come out later this year.

Extra Tidbit: The thing that bugs me the most is that I'd really love to see Cameron's BATTLE ANGEL but that film looks like it's gonna hit the backburner to all this AVATAR stuff.

Cameron's already written it. Now, it's time to release it because it's safe b/c of all the success of AVATAR. There's no way he's just gonna sit down and start this. It's already done. Just needs a cover.

I agree with Sampson actually. I don't see what all the hoohaa is about Avatar. It's pretty, and it's a good story...but to me it's just not the greatest movie ever made. LOTR, however, is...so I didn't miss the boat on that one. In fact, it's the biggest boat I've ever been on! Anyway...this is the first of a long line of novels, teen fiction, and kiddie books that's bound to come out. Say hello to the new Star Wars.

This is great! Can't wait to read it. Also, what a fucken idiot you are. Cameron created a new cinematic world in Avatar, one I'd love to live in through a novel form. Reading the scriptment, you see there's so much material and information in there. He has the resources, the talent, and the money to do this. So James Cameron should go for it!

Anyone who read the scriptment from the 90's will know only about 40% of what was in that made it to the final movie. I don't see anything wrong with Cameron letting fans read a more detailed version of that, especially considering the sequel film will take place AFTER the first film, so the novel will basically be a complete backstory that leads to the first film. And Cameron himself is writting it, not handing it over to some hack for 'novelization'
Wow, you're right to hate on that, how

Wow, you're right to hate on that, how dare Cameron give fans more of what they want, what and assh*le!!!
Also, after Titanic and now especially after Avatar Cameron doesn't need to do a single thing for money. He never really did, but now even moreso he does things that interest him. You think he spent 12 years NOT making films and exploring the ocean because he was money hungry Lucas-esqe mogul? Hell no. He does projects that inspire him, if people want to see/read them fine, but money is not a major factor. How much do you think he'd pocket for this novel, a million? Who cares when he'll get a couple hundred mil for Avatar, let alone what he was previously worth.
Claiming he's doing this for the money has no logic. If anything it proves he has more respect for his fans than Lucas and others by handling the novel himself rather than off loading it to some hack for quick cash.

i love how many people are critizing James Cameron for him writing his interpretation to this classic story, like so many others have, and james managed to write an original THEME for this film seeing as how theirs more then one theme in this movie, and to Z_oasis, are you fucking stupid ? of coarse he can write who do you think wrote terminator, terminator 2, aliens, titanic??? get your facts straight. stop looking at the 3d and see the message of the film.

i've read a bunch of Star Wars novels but...

even Lucas decided to leave that writing to other people... maybe Cameron should take at least this page from Lucas's book.
Timothy Zahn, maybe.

Of all the stories

Why not write an Aliens book instead of Avatar. I don't care about that world and it's crappy characters. 3D will never make a movie worth watching in my eyes. What happens when this mess of a film comes out on DVD and there is no 3D???? What happens then? You actually have to pay attention to the shitty dialogue and bad acting, only to discover there is no story here. It's boring...

Why is Cameron trying to make reading cool too?

I'm very chill with Avatar. I'll probably grab this. But why is James Cameron trying to make me read. Is he going for Rowling's record now. I swear he is trying to make reading cool. Maybe the book will be in 3-D

Your job is to simply report the news. You are not allowed to have an opinion. Gameslave is really upset and I think we all owe him an apology.

So I'll be the adult here and say Gameslave, I'm sorry for anything I have said against Avatar that may have hurt your feelings. I know Mr. Cameron's having a tough year and can't take the criticism and you're just defending a helpless man.

Gameslave is not the only one annoyed when articles include the opinions - good or bad - of the author. It's unprofessional to start with, not to mention anytime you insert your own opinion into an article, you're automatically influencing the readers, one way or the other.

Yes, opinions are perfectly fine, HOWEVER, if you're a paid writer for a news site, you need to let the readers form their own opinions, rather than force yours down their throats. Make sense yet?

I think after all the news about Avatar, it's okay to have one writer disagree with the popular opinion. I don't think he's forcing his opinion down anyone's throat either. Everyone has made their opinions about Avatar already. I highly doubt someone really liked Avatar and then read what he wrote and said "You know, on second thought, that movie was awful. Thanks Mike Sampson for clearing the air!" This isn't the New York Times or a major newspaper, it's a film website and the fun part is

There's no need to get pissed off about it. I'm also sure if he wrote a negative response about District 9, Gamslave wouldn't come to it's rescue and argue keeping your opinions to yourself. You're making it one sided. If you're gonna argue opinionated writers on this site, you need to be there to argue every time one of them forms their own opinion. And how boring would it be if they did just simply report the news. They're writers, they wanna put some on their own stuff in there.
5:03PM on 02/17/2010
So, no - my comment didn't make sense to you. Oh well.

And for the record, I've made the same "keep your opinions out" argument way before, & on other websites and stories not pertaining to Avatar. I was talking about the practice in general, which you apparently missed. (Notice, I said nothing about Avatar)

No, you didn't get HIS comment, Malaguy. If you didn't fucking notice, this website is not serious fucking journalism. Most of the time, they get their stories from other places and add their own style and opinions to it. This is how it's always been. So for you to come in here and tell them to keep it strictly to the news makes you a fucking idiot.

The second point he's made is that you've never made this point on any of the other articles where the writer gives their opinion until this one.

I love it, it's perfectly cool and acceptable to bash other movies when they're not original regardless of whether they're good or not, but if it's James Cameron flick, then everyone has to be nice and praise it. Get over it. This movie sucked, the 3D was flat, the FX were on course for your standard blockbuster and it's an insult to the original story tellers to call this story original.

All that stolen ideas argument about the story of this film is getting old. Why just this one ? Every single movie look like another one. But it doesnt seem to keep you from loving them. Find something else if you really want to complain about this flick.
Now ...
Like I said before, I didnt love the movie, but I liked it.
Im not gonna read the book, even if I had been in love with the film I wouldnt have read it. Because there are more important books and better ones out there.

I think its the fact the movie was being hyped as the greatest thing of the decade.... Visually it may have been, but the backlash proves that you need more than fancy FX/3D to make a truely great movie

Avatar was a visual treat, but once you get past the 3D, it was just an overal alright movie with its flaws.
Now I only wish Cameron got back to the Gunnm project, aka Battle Angel Alita. A violent sci-fi saga where a cybernetic cutie beats the crap out of brain-eating cyborgs. And visually, this would be the exact opposite of Avatar: dark, industrial, decadent cyberpunk. That is something I'd love to see from Mr Cameron.

For the record..."just jealous" is an even worse argument than any coherent statement about not liking Avatar. I didn't love it. And I really don't think it has Star Wars or Trek potential as a multi-media franchise. It would just drag the whole thing down.

Agree with Movie Man2

I agree that all the Avatar haters are just jealous. "Of what?" you ask - Of Cameron's ability to create a spectacular movie experience & gross over $2 Billion in the process. I'd say their jealous of that.

And please, lets stop with the Dances with Wolves angle. We've all heard it before, & no one cares. It's a great movie. Get over the fact that you're just plain jealous & petty about it.

Give me a break...

DEFINITE BUY!!!

I'm putting tiss and the moviw on my Christmas list. I pretty much loved the movie. And I would like more backstory, as the film looked more like an excellent adaptation of a bestselling sci-fi novel.

And all the Avatar haters are just jealous.

I also didn't love Avatar. Yes it was pretty, but it was predictable and poorly written.

Amen. The story was just a recycled mess from other films. The visuals and some of the performances were what made the movie special. Stay behind the camera, Cameron.
