James Cameron's Avatar 2 delayed again; Won't open in 2017 as planned

01.22.2016

Avatar 2 James Cameron Sam Worthington Zoe Saldana Sigourney Weaver

Last month, James Cameron said he was targeting a Christmas 2017 release for his first of three planned AVATAR sequels, but now The Wrap has heard it won't be ready in time for next year's holiday season, and has been delayed once again. Fox declined to comment on the delay, although it has been confirmed by individuals with knowledge of the situation. An updated release date hasn't been announced yet.

While the studio never officially set the follow-up to hit theaters Christmas 2017, the delay may have something to do with STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII's new release date. However, Cameron is also a bit of a perfectionist, and it's obvious that he doesn't want to rush the sequels.

The plan is to shoot all three films at the same time, but there's still no official word on when filming is expected to kick off, and you know there's also going be a lengthy post-production process. With that being said, when do you think is the earliest AVATAR 2 will open?

Like everyone else is pretty much saying, drop these stupid sequels already. The first one was alright, but it doesn't warrant a sequel, let alone a trilogy of them.

i wish Cameron would just give the hell up on this crap. He's obsessed with these blue freaks. The first one was mediocre at best. He needs to direct and another Alien film or maybe a sequel to True Lies and/ or The Abyss. Let it go James.

Just pull the plug! Nobody cares about a sequel to Avatar. The first one was forgettable.

It still baffles me to this day how the first one did so well. Cameron is a great director to be sure, but its not really like he is so far ahead of some of his peers (such as Spielberg, Abrams, or Jackson) to warrant the amount of money the first one made. The first one was a solid one time watch, but thats it, and it completely lacked in originality. Yea, sequels? No offense, but no thanks. Someone should probably just pay him a butt ton of money to save the Terminator franchise.

I'll agree with Jackson and Spielberg as being Cameron's peers, but Abrams? No way. Abrams best movie is about on par with Cameron's worst. Abrams has never made a movie as good as Terminator 1 & 2, Aliens, The Abyss, or Titanic. I enjoyed Abrams' Star Wars, but it wasn't great. I'd rank it with True Lies or Avatar.

I'm guessing James Cameron is off to his deep sea trek again.

Avatar is still a thing? Feels like aeons ago when the first one came out. But then again there was almost 7yr gap between his Terminator movies so I guess one more year wouldnt hurt.

I'm all for the sequels, as many as he wants...

He has said flat out that he wants this to be his Star Wars. How can you possibly fault him for that? The first one was the most beautiful movie I've ever seen on screen at the time, even if it was basic ass plot. I'll never understand why people complain about announced movies. Make an Avatar a year from now till forever and I'll go see it, same with Star Wars, or pretty much any other cool comic book or fantasy type franchise. Keep them coming! If they're bad, SO WHAT! On to the next one.

I still don't see how there will be three sequels to Avatar. The story has been told. What else is there to tell? I was kind of hoping Cameron would move on from this.

Don't see the point to do sequels for Avatar. May be he wants to create a Star wars, Middle Earth kind of Universe and mythology

HA!

I totally called this on the article talking about pushing back the release date on Episode VIII. I won't lie in saying that I honestly think Avatar sequels are a dream at best and will probably not be made.

He's not getting any younger

It's a shame that Cameron will be wasting most of his remaining years with Avatar when there's so many other smaller projects he could tackle. By the time this releases, the general audience will probably have completely forgotten about these films.

I highly doubt that audiences will have forgotten about the number one movie of all time. Take your time, JC. We're waiting.

wow suzy777, you are a super fanboy. Avatar is not the number one movie of all time in any category...Anyway, yes Roy, it is a shame. Especially when you factor in that Avatar was merely a proof of concept film for his new motion capture technology. Because he was going to bring Evangelion to life but needed better tech to do it. It was the 2nd highest grossing film of all time, why wasn't that good enough for him?!

theBean, Avatar is still the #1 movie of all-time worldwide. And Titanic is still #2. TFA still has a ways to go.

And when has James Cameron ever wanted to do "smaller projects"? That's the antithesis of what he does.

oh worldwide, I was looking at domestic gross, which is Gone with the Wind #1 Avatar #2 and Critics Votes, which Avatar wasn't even on, heh.

*Throws head back* Cameron! you're wasting your time when you could be filming so much cooler stuff. Imagine a Star Wars film directed and co-written by Cameron.

Boy this is getting ridiculous. I like Cameron, always makes films worth seeing. On one hand, he is smart about filming the next three at the same time, that way we can see them closer together and will be more invested in story. But if the first one has shitty box office then he's screwed. I do have faith in him though because he does make entertaining films. Two more years though...jesus.

Good. Hopefully it never gets made. At this point, with trying to film three sequels at once, He won't even make a 2018 release date.

He should just give up. No way this will make as much bank as the first and a lot of people in high places are gonna be pissed.

Really wouldn't be surprised if this never sees the light of day. Where as Saldana is a good actress and now has one foot in the Marvel universe I can't say the same for Sam Worthington - he's just not big time enough and showed in T4 and clash of the Titans he doesn't have the ability to carry a movie himself

this is either going to turn out two ways...

1. what he is attempting will in fact work and the film will be even better than the first. I heard that he wants to make the underwater cities more of the center piece this time, which was influenced by his deep water dives, and that would be awe inspiring if done and animated right.

2. He creates one of the biggest bombs in history

Does anybody other than Cameron actually want Avatar sequels? I haven't heard anybody mention the first one in years.

well, the thing is, avatar was a terrible movie, it was done really well, but the movie itself was awful.
so, why make sequels you ask? well my dear watson, that's quite simple in fact, money be the answer to that, and a lot of it :P
if the first one banked all the money it did, there is no way the studio wasnt going to try and get more out of it ;)
