James Gunn completes Guardians 2 draft; Chris Pratt reveals his sequel hopes

I don't know how many of you were expecting GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY to be as big (or as fun) as it ended up being but I'm not ashamed to admit that I was not one of them. Beyond a few details, I was completely unfamiliar with the characters and the world Marvel would present us with; but they knew what they had, and it paid off. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2 is still several years off and there remains quite a lot of work to be done, but I'm already excited.

Director James Gunn recently completed his first draft of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2 and shared a very brief glimpse at the fruits of his labour:

The eagle-eyed among you may notice that Gunn reveals that GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2 will NOT be the official title, which begs the question...what could it be? Star-Lord himself (who?) spoke with IGN recently where he admitted that he hasn't been briefed on what the future may bring the Guardians, but he did touch on what he'd like to see in the sequel:

I think like the universe itself it’s best to expand outward. I don’t personally – and it’s not up to me, I’ll do whatever they want me to do – I don’t want to see the Guardians defend Cleveland, Ohio. We’re cosmic man. I want to be in space.

I agree with Chris Pratt, after the wonderful space-based shenanigans that the first film gave us I'd be hesitant to see the Guardians kicking back with Tony Stark and the like on Earth. What I would like to see in the inevitable team-up is the Earth-based heroes traveling into space themselves and running into Peter Quill. We've already seen outsider's adjusting to Earth, lets switch it up and blow Tony Stark's mind by showing him a giant head floating in space.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2 should begin filming early next year for a May 5, 2017 release.

It took me completely by surprise.....

I was really cynical about the first film, and was delightfully surprised. It was close to the perfect balance of humor and action. My only concern about the 2nd installment is Gunn's immediate comments about wanting to change up the team. That smacks of sequels where they add a kid {cough . . . Mummy . . . cough} for no reason other than to give the audience something new to look at and the characters something new to do (instead of writing a good story). We've already got the Avengers

We've already got the Avengers breaking up after just two movies (giving us a painfully inferior group for the next film) and he wants to change the lineup instead of just writing a good movie to explore the originals further?

I hope he changes his mind. We can see plenty of new characters, but I hope the team stays the same for at least one more film.

They are cosmic! It would be amazing to have Stark as the fish out of water in their domains. Or Cap America or some other Avenger. The look on the faces of Thor's companions when they met the Collector was hilarious. All I would ask for is for Gunn to get a bit more help with some of the special effects. Like his space battle sequences are pretty muddled compared to something like 5th Element.

Of course Guardians of the Galaxy needs to be in space and defending many planets. They might visit Earth, who knows?

Outside of the Avengers films, I think overall, Winter Soldier is the best solo Marvel film while Guardians of the Galaxy is my personal favorite out of the bunch.

The first one was just very satisfying on so many levels and had numerous payoff moments that put a huge grin on your face by the end of it. Plus, the kick ass soundtrack contributing and being its own somewhat character in the movie was a nice touch as well. And it's the only comic book film to make me tear up (ie the scene

And it's the only comic book film to make me tear up (ie the scene where Gamora yells "Grab my hand!", and Peter see's his mother, when the whole team defeats Ronan by holding one another's hands, and when Peter reads the letter from his mother).

Just really excited what and where else the storyline goes after this....possibilities are endless.
