James Gunn confirms a few things regarding Guardians of the Galaxy

04.18.2013

Since it was announced that James Gunn would be helming GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY rumors have flown back and forth regarding casting and everything in between. Half of what we heard was shot down by Gunn himself who took to Facebook and Twitter to let everyone know that what we were hearing regarding the film was untrue.

So what is true? Gunn recently spoke with HeyUguys.com about those rumors and this is what they got from their interview with the director:

- The project starts shooting at the end of June.

- Chris Pratt, Michael Rooker are signed on to the project. He wouldn’t confirm Zoe Saldana or Dave Bautista’s involvement outright, but from his answers, there’s no question that they’re on. He even explained why he cast Bautista.

- We’ll find out who’s playing Rocket Racoon in the next few weeks, but it’s not likely to be Jason Statham.

- In spite of the impression some of the concept art may have given, it’s going to be ‘very, very different from Star Wars’.

- Rocket Racoon is the ‘heart’ of the movie, and the design has moved on a bit from the concept art we saw a couple of months ago.

- Robert Downey Jr is not involved. Either as a major cast member, or as a cameo.

To check out the full interview, head here.

Going back to Rocket Racoon, I was amused by this status Gunn posted on Facebook last week:

Someone on Instagram just called me a FUCKING IDIOT if I don't make Rocket Raccoon look just like Starfox. Aww, Internet.

I laughed my ass off. Gunn is my kind of people.

Rocket Racoon is welcome to be the heart of the movie. His character might represent the humble Everyman while events occur on a galactic scale. Rocket Racoon might seem the small, silly crew member amongst the other Guardians of the Galaxy. Each audience member would be in the same situation as RR if they joined on this space odyssey. Howard the Duck plays the same role in many of his adventures with other Marvel beings. And, he provides the necessary earthy commentary upon tales to

Also, Rocket Racoon might be the funny crew member. He is already a caricature of pulp space adventurers such as Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon (he is an anthropomorphised Adam Strange; compare their settings and stories). He is already a cartoon that general audiences especially do not take too seriously. Humor serves sometimes as the heart of a story.

Ah yes, glad you mentioned Howard the Duck. It's a toss up which of these stupid anthropomorphic animal characters I want to see LESS on the big screen.

How are there so many people who even know about this super team?? I've NEVER heard of them before this whole marketing push for phase 2 started, and all I can think of is that they sound ridiculous and stupid. Meanwhile it seems like everyone else is like, "Woo! It's those guys who I totally know everything about somehow and have fond childhood memories of in a completely-non-fake way! I can't wait!"

Yeah I was wondering the exact same thing.

That being said, I'm just psyched for a Marvel movie starring Chris Pratt.

i know because i was a comic geek, but outside of that sphere, i have no idea how you know of GoG. they were kind of an answer to DC doing LEGION, being set in the far future so the writers could do what they wanted. the incarnation in this movie is the second or third GoG group or a reboot.

Same feeling here. Never heard of these guys, and see any way this ties in closely to the general feel of the "known" superheroes so far. And a fucking Raccoon. A RACCOON? Honestly?

A lot of people didn't think the Avengers could be done and Whedon did a great job with what he had to work with. Not saying Gunn can pull it off, but it is possible. I'll wait till I see it.

At least Whedon didn't have to shoehorn a f***ing Raccoon into his story.

Really bummed that Jason Momoa isn't Drax

And I don't think Gunn has anywhere near the chops that Whedon does. Slither is a fun movie, but it was mostly due to Nathan Fillion and Michael Rooker (and Elizabeth Banks).

James Gunn... no....

Jesus.. could they have chosen a worse fit for a movie like this? He's even WRITING it? Fuck that. He directed Slither and Super, so I would be willing to give him sort of a chance. Those movies weren't too bad. But he has written Scooby-Doo... total bullshit.

This is a terrible idea. Only thing I'm liking about this is that Rocket Raccoon is going to be "at the heart of" it. I love Rocket Raccoon! :D

But I am not a fan of James Gunn. I hope he pulls it off, but I am not being

Edit: Wow... -17? Really? Not even in my post where I was like, "I know I'll get downvoted to oblivion" did I receive this much hate. haha.

Very excite about this. At first I was skeptic, but I have faith in Gunn in giving us a really good film and delivering the goods.

And making Rocket Racoon the "heart" of the story is interesting. Really hope they cast someone great for the role if the Rocket Racoon is going to be the "heart" of the film.

Carrey was never confirmed. Just rumored. I don't know where the Statham rumors came from.

Bendis (the comic writer) came out a while back and said that he thought Statham's voice would be perfect for Rocket Raccoon, but he was quick to clarify that it was just his feeling on the topic and was not linked to the production in any way.
