James Gunn confirms Ronan won't appear in Guardians of the Galaxy 2

After losing a dance battle, one tends to shy away from any more public appearances. That’s my strategy anyways, and maybe the same thinking behind James Gunn’s recent statement when it comes to GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2. In a Facebook Q&A, Gunn confirmed that Ronan the Accuser, played by Lee Pace, will not be returning for the Guardians sequel.

When asked a question about whether Ronan would ever show up again Gunn replied "Who knows, but not in 2, no."

It’s not that surprising considering *spoiler alert* that Ronan is destroyed by the Guardians at the end of the movie. That was a pretty solid way to go out, for now anyway. When asked whether he’d ever consider having Pace return to the franchise, Gunn replied, "Perhaps someday." So it sounds like he’s leaving the door open and holding a never say never policy. I suppose that’s what Infinity Stones are for.

I look forward to a new villain in the sequel, word of advice, practice your moonwalk. Pace recently appeared in The Hobbit trilogy as Thranduil and will be back for season 2 of the AMC series Halt and Catch Fire. His next starring role is in the including a starring role in the Lance Armstrong biopic ICON.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2 is scheduled for May 5, 2017.

From the sounds of it,

if they do bring back Ronan, they either will have to recast or throw a truckload of money at Lee Pace for him to reprise the role. It appears his star is on the rise.

What is it with Marvel? Why does all their villain's suck? Whiplash, Iron Monger, Extremis Guy Pierce, retard Mandarin, Malaketh, etc. Ronan was actually not half bad but did kill him off at the end.

I agree. To me, the best MCU villain thus far is the Winter Soldier, and he's probably going to make the transition to superhero at some point in this franchise!

The Abomination was used pretty efficiently.

I always assumed James Badge Dale would get the Lance Armstrong part. Nothing wrong with Pace though.

RONAN is a great character IN THE COMICS. BUT, like most MCU villains, he was rather weak in the movie as far as characterisation goes (And I think it's a bad move from the MCU to kill off his bad guys at the end of each film) !
So let's hope he'll come back.
Beside, the scene at the beginning of the film, when you see him emerging from a pit, was supposed to be at the end of the film, with him being kind of reborn. So, from the start, Gunn always wanted him around after GotG 1.

well, could be Ronan isn't dead...

the purple infinity stone in comics is supposed to control ' space' as in move objects or people through it, and any reality...so the planet that had its population wiped out where quill finds it..maybe they were just moved to a different reality...and maybe, Ronan was too.

If I have one criticism for GOTG, it'd be: Needs more Ronan, less Yondu.

While I'm sure he's more intriguing in the comics, Ronan felt like such a MacGuffin villain. I'm fine with a new main villain in GOTG 2.

Well Ronan is a great character, that unfortunately felt so throwaway in the film. I wish they developed him more because frankly I didn't feel invested in him much. He has a rich lore but they didn't feel like they spent much time on him. So if he comes back, here's to fleshing him out more.

Hope to see him back in a future film where all of the Infinity Stones come into play. He was too good of a villain to have been killed off in one film.
