James Gunn names his favorite films of 2014

01.08.2015

If you took a poll of favorite directors of 2014, James Gunn would likely top that list. Now, I didn't say Best Director as that will be determined at the various awards ceremonies over the coming months, but Gunn's candid interviews and propensity for sharing details about GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY on his social media accounts has made the filmmaker a friend to movie fans everywhere.

It should come as no surprise that when Gunn shared his list of favorite movies of 2014 that we would all be intrigued to see what he had to say. Gunn posted the following on his Facebook page with some brief disclaimers as to what did or did not make his list. Check it out and see if your tastes align with the guy who brought us the top grossing film of the year.

My Favorite Movies of 2014

Admittedly, due to my schedule, I've probably seen less films this year than any other year, outside of the one before it when I was actually shooting. And I, of course, am not including Guardians of the Galaxy on this list, as that probably wouldn't be fair. But here are my favorites of the ones I've seen. And, although this list isn't really in order, Whiplash is my very favorite of all of them; I strongly suggest you see it immediately.

Whiplash, dir. Damien Chazelle
The LEGO Movie, dir. Phil Lord & Christopher Miller
Edge of Tomorrow, dir. Doug Liman
The Drop, dir. Michaël R. Roskam
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, dir. Matt Reeves
Boyhood, dir. Richard Linklater
The Raid 2, dir. Gareth Evans
Heaven Knows What, dir. Josh Safdie & Benny Safdie
Captain America: The Winter Soldier, dir. Anthony Russo & Joe Russo
Begin Again, dir. John Carney
The Hive, dir. David Yarovesky
John Wick, dir. David Leitch & Chad Stahelski

NOTES
1. These are my favorites, not necessarily the best. They don't have to be yours.
2. It must be the year of the director team (???) as there are four pairs.
3. Yes, you're right, I DO like action movies.
4. I'll post my favorite songs and my favorite TV shows of the year soon.
5. Comment below. Kindness to one another is imperative.

James Gunn is a great follow on social media, so make sure you check him out. You may learn a little something about what is coming down the line or at least some great recommendations for things to watch, do, or listen to.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is now available on Blu-ray/DVD.

The LEGO Movie, The Raid 2, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Edge of Tomorrow, John Wick... If this were the "Guilty pleasures of the year" list I could maybe understand, but especially coming from a filmmaker, this "Favorite films of the year" list is really scaring me. Also I sure hope he forgot to mention "American" was a criteria to make it on his list, because there are many foreign films that were spectacular this year.

Just because they are mainstream movies and not low budget or indie doesn't mean they don't deserve spots on the top of the lists. They are all fantastic movies, especially Lego movie which I'm sure was a quite the process to make.. Not every top 10 movie needs to be a boyhood or Foxcatcher!

The Hive???

Dude, you can't put movies the general public won't see for months on your Best of Last Year list. Bad form, James.

You know, I've seen Whiplash on a lot of top 10 lists. Did it already get released, or is it waiting for an expanded release? I don't remember seeing it advertised and it's not currently playing near me.

This makes me wonder: has a movie director ever gone the full Kanye and put their own movie on a top 10 list?
