James Gunn says Marvel execs found the plot of Guardians 2 to be risky

02.09.2015

Everyone wants to know what to expect from GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2 despite the fact we are still two years away from seeing the film. But, with Marvel plotting out their projects years in advance, writer/director James Gunn already has his plans developing for the follow-up to the second highest grossing film of 2014.

On a recent appearance on Alison Rosen's podcast, Gunn was asked what GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2 will be based on to send fans on a furious reading binge of old Marvel Comics. Here is what Gunn had to say.

“It’s not really based on anything. The story for Guardians 2 is an original story that I came up with that I started working on actually while I was shooting Guardians 1, and it’ll answer some of the questions that were put forth in the first movie about Peter Quill’s father and who he is and what’s going on with that. We’ll get to know some of the characters a little bit more and then we’re going to meet a couple of new characters who will be very important to Guardians movies and probably important to the Marvel Universe as a whole.

The identity of Peter Quill's father was teased at the end of the first movie and seemed like a logical choice for the sequel's main plot. Gunn has shared theories and ideas as to the senior Quill's identity but it sounds like it is going to be a big surprise for everyone.

It’s different than what’s in the comic books. Peter Quill’s father is somebody different in the comics. So then when the movie came out, we got green-lit on the sequel right away. I went in and I sat down with those guys and I’m like, ‘Okay, here’s what I think the sequel should be.’ And they were like, ‘Oh, whoa. That’s risky, but okay.’ Now I’m going to turn over the story in a few short weeks and we’ll find out how well it works.”

Marvel has not taken too many risks in the MCU to date outside of the Mandarin twist from IRON MAN 3. While they haven't exactly played it safe, either, I am still intrigued as to what would have made them seem cautious. What we do know is we should trust in James Gunn to deliver something pretty impressive with GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2. Hopefully we learn what other Marvel connections he has in store soon.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2 hits theaters on May 5, 2017.

AT this point they should just let James Gunn do whatever he wants with GOTG, he obviously loves the story & takes it serious & wants to please the fans as well. I also really didn't mind the Mandarin twist, but I understood the reason it pissed off so many fanboys, mind you a bit overblown. In Marvel & Gunn I trust though to deliver a solid sequel to their most surprising movie in the MCU.

I like the sound of it. Gunn is a risk taker, and I think that is what is refreshing about him. Guardians was certainly a risk to begin with: a relatively unknown Marvel property to most people, an epic space yarn that was vastly different from most of what we had seen from Marvel. But I think it was thanks to Gunn that, despite it being so different from everything, it turned out to be such a great film. I am excited. GotG is one of my favorite MCU films and I'll be happy to see more.

Whilst Iron Man 3 was a financial success, I feel like Marvel were hurt by the negative reactions to the twist... hence then Marvel short...and pretty much any comment they've made since. I don't think they'll do anything as risky again. Whilst GoG movie was a risk, as is Ant-Man...Strange to follow etc etc - at least they're actual characters from their comics - characters thy have complete confidence in... but taking a Mandarin style risk again - something not from the comics? No, don't

No, don't think they'd do it, at least to that level, a risk that didn't actually contribute anything to the story, unlike the Shield twist in Winter Soldier that was an integral part to the movie and the TV series and why it was received very well.

I have a feeling he's either going to kill of one of the Guardians from the last movie or have one of them betray the others/become a villain of sorts. They are, after all, a team of criminals. That sounds pretty risky (in a good way) to me!

Bring on more GOTG.... But....

Gunn said prior to GOTG that a Thunderbolts movie would be his dream Marvel movie. Kevin told him if Guardians was a hit he could direct anything he wants... I wonder if that offer is still on the table?

I like some of the thunderbolts I've read. I Know they are sorta like suicide squad, and I never understood why dc is wanting that movie to be their 2nd ( or 3rd) in the dcu. Despite some rather lame villains, I'd much rather see Mickey Rourke, Red Skull, abomination, and Loki all join a thunderbolts squad - all established cinematic characters - than what DC is doing. Maybe even introduce red hulk. They have ghost rider and punisher back.

Riskier the better in my opinion. One of the reasons why the first Guardians of the Galaxy was so successful and different was because Gunn and co. took risks with the storytelling by not making it all about the Avengers and by having their two most popular as a talking tree and gun wielding Raccoon. So I really hope they take the same approach again.

And I also believe that Adam Warlock will be Quill's father.

Marvel knew very well that Rocket and Groot were gonna steal the show. they were saying that during filming before they even cast Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel. it's not like that came out of nowhere. they are rehashes of established character archetypes. i bet you when the concept of Groot was pitched, the name "Chewbacca" came up more than a few times.

But still. For Marvel to make a film about something so unknown to the General public and have it be so successful is risk taking all by itself.

One of those honest trailers did a good job. The not avengers starring leader guy with past nostalgic jokes (starlord/ Cap), wisecracking tech genius (rocket/Iron man), huge brute who says few words (GROOT/hulk), proud warrior who doesn't get earth jargon (drax/Thor), and hot assassin spy chick. Don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, but despite its quirky characters and sci fi setting, it was still pretty formulaic.

Guardians 2 will have Rocket creating a robot army. The Guardians will fight this army with the help of Adam Warlock, Moondragon and her twin brother.

I'm not a reader of the comics, so not sure if this is a good or bad thing, but obviously he made the first one work, so the "riskiness" of it might not be a big turn off for most

I'm not too worried about it being too risky for Marvel. I get the impression from his comments in the article that Quill's father will turn out to be a heavy hitter in the Marvel Universe. So utilizing him as Quill's father in GOTG will have significant impacts on the entire MCU and how they would want to utilize that character in the future. So pretty much, if it works well in GOTG2 then it will be a major game changer for the MCU in phase 3 - much like Winter Soldier was for phase 2.

I'm betting Adam Warlock is Peter's dad which is going to play an instrumental role going forward with the future Marvel films. I hope we also get to see Captain Marvel too!
