James Gunn talks Guardians of the Galaxy 2; Quill's lineage and Thanos

Aug. 12, 2014by: Sean Wist

If you haven't had a chance to check out GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY in theaters, well, what are you waiting for?!? Also, there are some minor spoilers ahead in regards to the film, so tread carefully if you're that sort of person. Anywho, at the end of GUARDIANS it was established that Peter Quill's father is not of Earth, and that Yondu knows more than he's let on. This is something that will definitely be addressed in the future, and for those of you fluent with the GUARDIANS comics, you can take what you know about Quill's father and throw it out the window. James Gunn recently stated that they're going to go a different route, as far as that reveal goes.

James Gunn in regards to Peter Quill's father:

There have been a lot of documents passed around about who Peter Quills father is between a select two or three of us. Thats been part of the plan since the beginning, thats something I had to work out before we shot the screenplay. We wanted to make sure Yondus place in everything made sense and it does, so its all very specific stuff. Its definitely not the character who it is in the comics, Ill say that much.

Regarding the appearance of Thanos in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2:

He will show up if he helps our story and he will not show up at all if not. Thanos is not the most important thing in Guardians 2, thats for damn sure. Theres the Guardians themselves and other threats the Guardians are going to be facing that are not Thanos. I think Thanos has been lonely for a long time. He can handle it. Hes used to his loneliness. Hes got some other kids out there. Hes got to look after them. Nebulas probably the sweetest of them, which tells you what his kids are like...

While it looks like Thanos will have a major role to play in a third Avengers film, I'm okay with him not showing up in GUARDIANS 2. I somehow doubt he won't, but from a cinematic standpoint, I want Marvel to bring in Thanos when they have time to really dig into his character and show us why he is such a threat to the universe.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2 is currently set for a July 28, 2016 release.

A fellow schmoe suggested casting Kevin Bacon as J'son. Unlikely as it is, I love this idea.

When I realized they weren't opening with the awesome intro to the new comics where his dad crashes and hooks up with his mom, and that character wasn't being brought up, I wondered if they were going to say Thanos was his dad. Did anyone else get that feeling? Any theories?

I would love the opening of GotG2 to have the same look and feel as the first one, with Meredith and Grandpa and everyone in a flashback, then follow the book and show J'son crash on Earth and fall in love with her, exactly as it was done in the new series. It would be cool if maybe the other side of Awesome Mix Volume 2 tells Peter this story, furthering his need to find his father.

Daddy Thanos?

quote 1: Peter Quill's father will definitely not be who it is in the comics
quote 2: Thanos has a lot of kids out there.

maybe it's a stretch, and doesn't really make sense, but did he just give us the answer?

I suspect that Thanos' next major appearance will be in a more Earth-based movie, since they'll want to tie him a little more concretely to the Avengers so that team-up makes more sense.

It's obviously going to be J'son.
His middle name is Jason, and his mother said he looks just like him!

Not only that, but do you really think the pet name Star-Lord was invented by his mother?

No, it's his actual title to coincide with being the Prince of Spartax.

I hope so. The comic route really is best. I'd hate to see them change his lineage.

OBVIOUSLY J'SON

i was tipped off when the director said "It's definitely not the character who it is in the comics, I'll say that much."

because James Gunn will directly lie about facts like this.

Should be fun speculating about this for the next couple of months.

Very much looking forward to the sequel.

Starhawk?

I read someone tossing out Starhawk as a potential father, seeing as he has powers to manipulate light, has light based wings and a halo'y thing also (Your father was an angel composed entirely of light...) it seems pretty spot on. I'll happily wait and see though, cause this movie exceeded my expectations so bring on GOTG2!

Okay, so who would feel the need to hire Yondu to protect/raise his child in such a manner? Apart from them creating a whole new character, which established comic book character would make the most sense or have the most potential?

He didn't hire Yondu to protect OR raise his kid, he hired him to smuggle Quill back to him. Yondu instead decided not to, I guess in part because, as Yondu claims, "The guy was an asshole"

So no J'son of Spartax? That's interesting and a little bittersweet. Let the guessing game begin. The fan suggestions that Adam Warlock is his father seem much less strange.
