James Gunn talks new characters, or lack thereof, in Guardians Vol. 2

Once a film is a success, particularly a Marvel film, there's a certain expectation that the inevitable sequel will amp up the number of characters to give you "more bang for your buck". However GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY director James Gunn seems to be resisting the urge to pack the upcoming sequel with new characters, preferring to give even more attention to the core group.

James Gunn fielded a few questions on his Twitter yesterday where he revealed his thoughts on how many new characters would be joining GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2.

That's not to say that there won't be any new characters joining the team in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2, Gunn was asked whether or not there would be any new female members turning up for VOL. 2 and he responded with a firm "maybe".

James Gunn has already denied that Carol Danvers’ Captain Marvel will be in the sequel as Gunn believes that it's important that Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) remains the sole "earthling" in the franchise, at least for now. As for Hulk, one of the other characters who has popped up on many of your GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 character wishlists, Gunn once again reiterated that we will definitely not see the giant green rage machine in the sequel.

James Gunn, who said that he is feeling way less pressure this time around, recently polished off the "risky" second draft of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2, and is currently in the process of getting the rights for the twelve chosen songs which will make up Awesome Mix Vol. 2. Rock on.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 opens on May 5 2017.

I really enjoyed gotg and I'm hoping this is in the minority of marvel sequels that are actually good. Marvel sequels tend to be pretty bad, the exception being winter solider.

How many more new characters would Guardians need anyway, other than who Star Lord's dad really & that's all.

Good for him........

The worst thing about AoU was them trying to set up a new Avengers team for most of the film. We finally got these guys after decades of wanting it, then after one film (and only 30 minutes of them even being a team) they are moving on to keep it fresh. Completely stupid idea, only topped by the B team we'll see in the next installment.

Well Adam Warlock HAS to be in it. He is the main hero (and villain- magus) in the infinity war. So they need to introduce him.

Nope. They'll rewrite it completely. There's no way to introduce and explain a character AND his alternate personality in one film that incorporates a dozens superheroes already. They'll simplify everything and have a completely different story than the comics. Just think about how different AoU was than the source material.

i know it wont be the comics - sounds more like they are doing the infinity gauntlet not infinity war (since war was Magus making evil versions of the heroes - they will never do crusade).

See they need to get the basic story though. AOU - is about everyone fighting ultron, so even though the movie really had nothing to do with the series, it has the same kind of premise. the infinity trilogy is about adam warlock fighting thanos, magus, goddess - if neither of these happen, then ill be a

Fine with me. One of the best aspects that worked so well for the first film was that the film didn't force too many Easter eggs into the storyline like previous Marvel films have done (ie Iron Man 2) and therefore allowed the story and characters to have more actual depth and for the story to flow smoother than other Marvel films. So I'm happy to read Gunn is approaching the film as "less is more" in terms of the characters that will be appearing in the sequel.

As far as the soundtrack

As far as the soundtrack goes, I would love for one of the songs to be 'Paradise by the Dashboard Light' by Meatloaf. Seems like a song that would fit perfectly into this type of comic book film.

And in terms of new characters, Adam Warlock is a must. I know they have to reveal and spend time on who Quill's father is, but introducing Warlock and his inevitable role in Infinity Wars is essential.
