James Mangold confirms Wolverine 3 to begin filming in early 2016

03.05.2015

After the X-MEN film universe was almost killed by the poor reception for X-MEN: THE LAST STAND and the WOLVERINE origin movie, James Mangold and Hugh Jackman teamed up and redeemed the character with THE WOLVERINE. We already knew that 20th Century Fox had given the greenlight for a third film in the standalone franchise, but now we have the good news as to when it will be getting underway.

In a brief exchange on Twitter, Mangold was asked when production would begin on the sequel to THE WOLVERINE. Here was his response.

As we know from X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, the timeline for all of the mutant characters has been shaken up. What this means for the continuity after THE WOLVERINE is unknown, but it does open up the possibilities for crossovers we thought impossible. Plus, with Hugh Jackman saying he would be open to cameo in DEADPOOL next year, we may be on the verge of getting a heck of a lot of Logan on the big screen. If production is set to start early in 2016, we will likely be hearing casting announcements towards the end of this year. Get excited, people!

THE WOLVERINE 3, or whatever it will be called, hits theaters on March 3rd, 2017.

I'm interested to see what the plot of this movie is. Seeing as how The Wolverine focused on Logan after the events of X3 and having to kill Jean Grey, I wonder where they can take his character next? DOFP kind of erased the conflict for Wolverine in the last solo flick.

Perhaps it will be set after X-Men: Apocalypse and we'll be getting a version of Old Man Logan?

Jackman's had a good run and I admire his commitment to the role, but once he's done I'll be glad to see another actor portraying Logan - it would take that to breathe life back into the X-Men movies and properly move forward with these. I thought Days of Future Past was a good enough movie but I still don't think it was worth trying to link all these films together and reintroducing previous cast. Like it or not but actors have a limited shelf-life - I'm not sure clinging onto the cast of the original movies, which feel pretty dated now, is really going to benefit anyone. As much as I love Stewart and McKellan and respect their performances, I think they're shooting themselves in the foot trying to stick to the 1960s to present day and future singular timeline. In that sense Wolverine is the least problematic character with his gradual aging. If they insist on having Professor X as a young adult in the 1960s, he's going to be 70ish in the present day making his involvement in futuristic war stories increasingly difficult.
I'd expect a complete reboot sooner rather than later.

How about an X-Men TV show set in the late eighties with Beast, Quicksilver, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm, Nightcrawler and Havok*? They could also introduce Polaris and Dazzler. I don't see the point of introducing new actors for Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm and Nightcrawler and then doing a series of Deadpool and Cable movies.

*Some people say that they are also introducing Angel but seeing as how he was in X-Men 3 I'd say that's a long shot (pun intended).

I'll get plenty of down votes for this, but I'm bleh to this. frankly The Wolverine was crap. It completely took a shit on his ronin Japan storyline. It was nothing like it should have been, and I long for what Aronofsky would have done. They took one of Wolverines top solo nemesis, The Silver Samurai, and turned him into a combination of Iron Man and a Transformer. Really?Steaming pile of shit and the sad fact is for awhile when I was growing up wolverine was my favorite character. Jackman has

Jackman has played him better than I could have ever imagined within a pg13 setting (though he should have been R), but he has been stuck in some true turds of story's with him.

Well, frankly, I remember the Silver Samurai as a villain for Daredevil, the Black Widow, Spider-Man and Spider Woman. He was originally working for Mandrill and Black Spectre and then later got hired by Viper (also known as Madame Hydra) to go up against S.H.I.E.L.D. He was later retconned into being a mutant and the half-brother of Mariko Yashida. He wasn't originally introduced as a Wolverine villain or even a mutant, let alone a member of the Yashida clan so I don't know why you are

He was originally working for Mandrill and Black Spectre and then later got hired by Viper (also known as Madame Hydra) to go up against S.H.I.E.L.D. He was later retconned into being a mutant and the half-brother of Mariko Yashida. He wasn't originally introduced as a Wolverine villain or even a mutant, let alone a member of the Yashida clan so I don't know why you are making out as though the movie changed everything when the comics themselves would constantly play fast and loose with their own canon.

As for the movie "taking a shit" on the Japan storyline, well, the Japan storyline was all about Wolverine fighting ninjas and then at the end the big confrontation was against Mariko's father who had been forcing Mariko to marry someone she didn't want to marry. That basic premise was in the movie: Mariko's father had arranged for Mariko to get married to a man she didn't love and Wolverine did fight him near the end of the movie and ended up killing him. But there was more to the movie than that: there was the whole storyline about Mariko's grandfather that was added to the story for the movie.

The Viper and the Silver Samurai didn't even appear in the Limited Series but instead showed up in X-Men #'2 172-173. In the comics, Kenuichio Harada was the Silver Samurai and with Will Yun Lee credited as Kenuichio Harada and the Silver Samurai in the trailers, one might be forgiven for expecting Will Yun Lee to have been the Silver Samurai in the movie. Instead, Kenuichio Harada and the Silver Samurai turned out to be two different characters. This tied in to the original premise of Mariko's grandfather wanting Wolverine's healing power for himself so he could have eternal life. The unexpected ending worked. Frankly, not everyone wants the movies to be exactly like the comics: we want the movies to be different so we can be surprised once in a while.

Love it.
Hopefully it's as good as the first minus the terrible ending.

Off topic.

Did anyone else see that Harrison Ford is in serious condition after a plane crash?

Even though the ending was a bit silly, I still enjoyed The Wolverine better than Origins. I want as much Wolverine as possible & if Jackman wants to cameo, let him, he clearly loves playing him & so do us fans.

Since they mentioned Professor X may play a part in the film I think it should continue exactly where they left off in DotFP. Have Charles probe Wolerine's mind and show him what has happened since the battle in front of the White House. I want to see a full on Weapon X movie showing Wolverine going on missions for Stryker not that garbage they showed in Origins. Bring back Liev as Sabretooth and show them taking on Omega Red.

Except Wolverine will be in X-Men: Apocalypse. I expect them to follow that continuity. If Patrick Stewart appears as Professor Xavier then I suspect it won't be until the very end and it will indicate that decades have passed since the end of X-Men: Apocalypse.

I still predict (regardless of Jackman's recent comments) that this film will be his last - 'Death of Wolverine'
