James McAvoy and Patrick Stewart probably won't share the screen in X-Men: Days of Future Past

Feb. 26, 2013by: Eric Walkuski

Bryan Singer is preparing an increasingly large ensemble for X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, which will basically be an X-MEN character orgy. Melding casts from the X-MEN trilogy with the younger crew from Matthew Vaughn's X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, the forthcoming adventure will attempt to be the ultimate example of superhero synergy. (No easy feat, of course.)

The time-travel element inherent in the story has begged the question: just how close will our beloved mutants get to their past/future selves? It's a staple of time-travel stories to have a character bump into himself (or herself) in a different era, but if it indeed happens in the latest X-MEN, don't expect that character to be Charles Xavier.

Speaking with Empire (via ComicBookMovie.com), "young" Professor X himself James McAvoy dissuaded the notion that he'll be sharing the screen with Patrick Stewart anytime soon.

It'll be cool, but I don't think we get any scenes together, sadly. I don't think there's any future self talking to past self."

Naturally, just because McAvoy doesn't "think" it will happen, doesn't make it so. He could be bluffing, for starters; the folks behind this movie aren't likely to spill too many beans regarding what's to be expected. There's also always the possibility that Singer and his team will add in a such a sequence. Scripts change all the time, after all.

As an aside, McAvoy was quite candid in the interview regarding his attitude toward starring in lower-profile films when he's not playing Professor X.

Having an X-Men in your back pocket, which hopefully will go for three movies, it makes you go, 'Right, it doesn't matter if I make 14 films that nobody sees...because in two years' time I'll make another X-Men'. Meanwhile, Fox are thinking, 'Why isn't this [frick]er out there building his profile so he can make us more money on the second X-Men?' But that's their fault for hiring me!"

Ah, I'm sure they're not blaming themselves, James; they were spot-on. You can help Mr. McAvoy collect his paycheck when X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST opens on July 18, 2014.

Extra Tidbit: Would you like to see McAvoy and Stewart converse in the new X-MEN? If so, what should they chat about? (Aside from their general handsomeness.)

Either way - I'm excited for this movie.

A question though regarding the old gang...I haevn't seen her name listed yet, but has Famke Janssen been cast in this yet? Wasn't a fan of how she went out and wouldn't mind the old Jean back.

"X-MEN character orgy'"?

No, you are thinking of XXX-Men: Days of Future Lust, coming out on video sometime this year to capitalize on the original.

It would be cool to see happen. But I don't think it will really add anything to the story at the end of the day. If it doesn't happen in the movie I doubt it will affect my enjoyment one way or the other. Frankly, I'd rather not see it happen and just see how the storyline in the past directly affects the characters in the present.

I love McAvoy & his at ease nature

That second highlight of interview was simply awesome! LOL Eagerly waiting for TRANCE with Dannny Boyle (trailer was fantastic).

As for the meet-up situations, all I want is a great piece of movie with as little time-travel related holes as possible. If the story and logic demands it, I'll be very happy, otherwise I'b be very fine too. Just not any stunt-sequence only for the sake of it!

I doubt there won't be a scene featuring the old Xavier and young Xavier. Having the two meet is too important for it not to happen. But I'm way more excited for older Magneto to meet young Magneto. Out of all of the characters that have to meet each other's younger selves, Xavier and Magneto need to have this happen.

And by the way, where is our James Marsden returning as Cyclops confirmation!!!!

I doubt we'll get a confirmation for James Marsden. I might be remembering wrong, but I believe he was not a fan of playing Cyclops in the first place. That being said, I would like to see him get recast for this film. I still say they should bring in the younger version of Cyclops and tweak the issues surrounding X3 so that he is alive in the current timeline, and recast the older version of Cyclops. I'm still a big fan of Jamie Bamber for the role.

If they have to re-cast for Cyclops then I would suggest Michael C. Hall. He would be fantastic.

If they have to recast Cyclops then I think Michael C. Hall would make for a great choice. He would own the role and bring a lot of depth to the role.
