James McAvoy is a "bad lieutenant" in this NSFW trailer and poster for Filth, based on the novel by Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh

Apr. 11, 2013by: Paul Shirey

James McAvoy has never had much trouble playing it over the top and it looks like he's settled into the level of intensity just fine for FILTH, an adaptation of TRAINSPOTTING author Irvine Welsh's novel. It boils down to a mix between Danny Boyle's TRAINSPOTTING and Abel Ferrara's BAD LIEUTENANT (and maybe a little bit of BAD LIEUTENANT: PORT OF CALL), which could make for a damn fun (and potentially scary) time at the movies.

FILTH co-stars Imogen Poots, Eddie Marsan, and Jamie Bell, as well as Jim Broadbent, who kept waiting to hear a "Nicholas Angel" reference just from hearing his voice in another "cop" film. I could easily see McAvoy's character teaming up for a HOT FUZZ sequel, which makes me that much more intrigued by this pic.

Get filthy:

Here's the synopsis:

A bipolar bigoted junkie cop, manipulates and hallucinates his way through the festive season in a bid to secure promotion and win back his wife and daughter.

FILTH is set for release in the UK in September, but has not secured a U.S. release yet. Stay tuned.

If this is even 50% as fucked up as the book, I'm there.

Woah

He's not even acting like a version of Bad Lieutenant. That is just a full on "What if Nicolas Cage was allowed to be a cop in general" impression.

Doesn't really look like my kind of film, but I like McAvoy, so I'll support this.

Looks like James McAvoy is on a roll here with Trance, Welcome to the Punch, and now this. Definitely getting a Bad Lieutenant vibe, if perhaps more tongue-in-cheek than the Abel Ferrara version. Gotta love that supporting cast, too. I'll watch pretty much anything with Jim Broadbent and Eddie Marsan in it.
