James McTeigue will direct the Bloodsport reboot, filming to begin in 2014

Jul. 24, 2013by:

I feel a lot like Frank Dux during the final fight in BLOODSPORT: someone has thrown sand in my eyes at the confirmation that the Van Damme-less BLOODSPORT reboot is moving forward with filming slated to begin in early 2014.

The original BLOODSPORT is a Cannon Films classic based on the "true" life story of Frank Dux who entered the underground Kumite competition in Hong Kong. Featuring Bolo Yeung, Donald Gibb, and a young Forest Whitaker, it is one of those classic 1980s guy movies. While there have already been three piss-poor sequels, they all kept the kumite plot device and felt like sequels. The reboot from TAKEN screenwriter Robert Mark Kamen was planning to completely jettison that aspect and make it the story of an American who goes to Brazil to recover from the violence he has experienced in Afghanistan who gets involved in a martial arts contest."

Phillip Noyce was linked to the film before but has since left. V FOR VENDETTA director James McTeigue is now helming the film for Relativity Media who are planning on shooting in Australia and Brazil beginning early in 2014, according to Variety. The new plotline seems to keep in line with the old one: The new film, which has not been cast, will explore the life of 21st century mercenaries as they collide with the underground world of Brazilian Vale Tudo fighting.

While V FOR VENDETTA was decent, McTeigue has turned in the lackluster NINJA ASSASSIN and THE RAVEN, which basically means this BLOODSPORT reboot is probably going to suck. From the description, the only similarity is the title. In fact, this BLOODSPORT sounds more like the movie FIGHTING with Channing Tatum which is not a good thing.

With shooting locations and dates already set it looks like there is no stopping this from happening. In that case, all I ask is that the filmmakers at least get Van Damme to cameo. I never thought saying including JCVD would improve a movie, but there you go.

I don''t understand why they are rebooting it and then changing the storyline by setting it in Brazil.

That said I'm surprised Hollywood don't make fighting tournament type movies anymore. You know, films like Kickboxer, Bloodsport, AWOL and more recently Never Back Down. they would be a welcome change to the CGI crapfests that we get these days.

Bloodsport is one of my all time favorites. However, the original Bloodsport was very loosely based on Frank Dux's stint in the Kumite. Dux did in fact fight in the east coast of the Americas. The kumite Dux fought in was in the Bahamas and not Hong Kong. He did not run away from the military to fight in the Kumite but was sent there undercover to expose the criminal organizations who ran it. Personally, I think Warrior (with Tom Hardy) was a perfect successor to Bloodsport for the modern day.

Understanding Hollywood reboots becomes a useless exercise when you realize that the Karate Kid reboot was set in China and was about Kung Fu, not Karate. It was a decent movie in its own right, but it shared nothing with the original.

A classic that should not be touched. If it takes the Evil Dead (2013) approach, (same premise, more of a sequel/stand alone, etc) then MAYBE, this film can bring something worth sitting through.

If I recall right...Bloodsport was my first Van Damme movie... Kumite... Kumite... Kumite...great movie. The reboot can go F itself if that's the plot they're going with...I mean ..."the story of an American who goes to Brazil to recover from the violence he has experienced in Afghanistan who gets involved in a martial arts contest" that's f-ing violent as f*ck...f-ing clever ...urg.

So every fucking movie ever made is getting remade? This shit started at the turn of the century, and it just has not fucking stopped. You'd figure movie goers would stop supporting remakes, but no, they are happy seeing complete ripoffs under the guise of "reboot".

Movies like Bloodsport only worked in a decade filled with cheesiness. They'll never be able to reboot Bloodsport in this earnest age of filmmaking. The first movie was bad, but it had camp that brought people back to it (plus TBS aired it once a week during my childhood). I sure this will be just another forgettable fight movie trying to lure in guys with a nostalgia for a good "bad" movie.

This hardly sounds like a re-boot? They could stapled on "Bloodfist", "Best of the Best", hell even "The Next Karate Kid" to that plot. Even The Karate Kid re-boot was about kung-fu (?!) just goes to show how no one really cares if t makes sense, just that audiences recognise the franchise.

As noted, McTeigue is style over substance...and in that regard this is probably a good fit for him.

McTeigue has a moderate to bad case of "style over substance-itis". The Raven was one giant, shlocky missed opportunity to tell a really cool story with the premise of Edgar Allan Poe solving murders based on his stories.

Original movie idea

Chong Li's grandson needs a mentor and turns to Frank Dux(JCVD), who is out of bloodsporting completely and not eager to return. Dux was once Chong Li's great opponent.

Pretty damn sure no other movie is doing this.

"...based on the true life story of Frank Dux..." Actually, he made all that shit up. Frank Dux is a fraud, but the resultant movie from his long winded lies is a classic regardless.

Cool

I actually really Ninja Assassin so I'm cool with this, and I thought The Raven was entertaining.

I don't know... will there be hilarious flashbacks featuring a poorly dubbed young Frank Dux? Will people call him Frank Ducks? Will he remind them that it's pronounced dukes? Will they reply, "As in put up your dukes. Got it."? If not, I want no part of this.
