James Wan officially signed to direct both WB's Aquaman and Sony's Robotech

06.03.2015

Riding high on his box office smash FURIOUS 7, director James Wan has locked in to not just one but two major studio pictures. Reports confirm that Wan will helm DC's AQUAMAN starring Jason Momoa as well as Sony's anime adaptation ROBOTECH. Both films will begin filming after Wan finishes helming THE CONJURING 2: THE ENDFIELD EXPERIMENT this Fall. With that film slated for release next summer, Wan is going to have his hands very full.

Wan will be overseeing the script process for AQUAMAN. Writer Kurt Johnstad is currently drafting the screenplay. While the movie is not even set for release until July 27, 2018, the fact that Warner Bros is slowing development to await involvement from Wan should put at ease anyone's concerns that the studio is rushing to get their movies in theaters.

As for the ROBOTECH news, this confirms rumors we have been hearing for a while now. While the film is set up at Sony and Wan now has two films gearing up with WB so we may not see ROBOTECH until after 2018. I would anticipate Wan's involvement with two major tentpole projects, both requiring heavy special effects and post-production, means both studios are prepared to wait these out.

It is quite amazing to see Wan's popularity grow. Just a few years ago, he was the guy behind INSIDIOUS and the critic-proof SAW franchise. Now, here he is directing some of the biggest projects imaginable. Stay tuned for more details as these projects develop.

Mamoa could make a fine Aquaman, but...

I really just don't care for the character design with this one.

If this picture were released without any accompanying details tying it to the DC universe, I'm betting folks wouldn't be able to tell if this was from Conan, from Game of Thrones, or any number of other fantasy genre films or TV shows that Mamoa may have been in.

It looks exactly like every other character he's ever played.

As a dyed in the wool DC fan I have hated the grim/dark tone that the DCCU is apparently aiming for(Seriously, why does Suicide Squad look way more fun than MOS, which was meant to be a "Superman" film). That being said, I really like where their heads are at in terms of the rest of the League, particularly Aquaman. I'll admit it, I thought Mamoa was way too huge to play a swimmer, but once he said that the reason he took the part was so his kids could finally see him smile and laugh in

And while I'm not a F&F fan I know from... pretty much the world that they're fun movies. I'm not expecting Guardians of the Galaxy-levels of humor but I'm also not expecting to leave this movie feeling cold and awful.

Huge win and steal for DC in terms of directors. Can't wait to see him bring Aquaman to life.

Dude...James Cameron must be PISSED!

Variety also just confirmed Mandy Moore as Aquagirl, James Woods as the movie's antagonist, Abaddon, a corrupt businessman. Ray Liotta and Sharon Stone co-starring as Aquaman's birth parents. Scripted by Kurt Johnstad w/ a polish by Andrew Kevin Walker & the musical score composed by Steve Jablonsky.

Unfortunately (much like "Hulk", "Superman" & "Spider-Man" before him)....it will most likely be followed by a 2019 reboot starring Jake Gyllenhaal in the title role. Directed by Michael Bay

Funny (however, tongue - in - cheek) that this announcement falls so close to the release of Vincent Chase & Co.'s big screen debut.

Seriously though, I'm pretty psyched for this come 2018. (Justice League team-up 1st or not) I was always in the majority of fanboys believing Aquaman to be the silliest of superheroes. That is *UNTIL* I played Injustice: Gods Among Us.

Yeah, yeah...I know. Video game critic or not...that was the very first time I witnessed just what some creative minds could accomplish w/ AM if given the right ideas.

So I say bring it on DC/WB. I don't know about everyone else around here but I'm in NO way suffering from Superhero fatigue. The more the awesome-er!

Sigh

Wan is a hack. If anything, it is sad to see how he's getting bigger projects instead of going the way of SyFy or direct-to-video affairs, where he belongs.

Wan is a hack? The dude is responsible for the only two horror movies worth seeing in the past 5 years.

@Masterdebator have you seen The Babadook? We Are What We Are? It Follows? A Field In England? All are much more critically acclaimed (and in my opinion far superior) to anything Wan has done. I was pleasantly surprised by The Conjuring, which is the only thing that gives me hope with these two projects, but for the most part I think Valdeths is right, he makes generic genre flicks that aren't as crappy as some of the competition, but still really aren't that good.
