James Wan will produce New Line's Mortal Kombat reboot

08.07.2015

After the monstrous success of FURIOUS 7 this year, director James Wan is very much in demand. He was scooped up to direct AQUAMAN for Warner Bros. as well as Sony's ROBOTECH, but both of those films will have to wait until he's finished with THE CONJURING 2: THE ENDFIELD EXPERIMENT.

As Wan is obviously not busy enough, The Tracking Board is reporting that the director will be producing the MORTAL KOMBAT reboot from New Line Cinema. The reboot has been in the works for several years with not much to show for it, but hopefully bringing James Wan on board will get things moving forward and enable them to "finish it." That was really stupid Kevin. The script for MORTAL KOMBAT, which is being described as "a departure from the mythology, with darker, brutally real martial arts," is underway from Oren Uziel (MORTAL KOMBAT: LEGACY) and Dave Callaham (THE EXPENDABLES).

The synopsis, according to TB:

[MORTAL KOMBAT] centers around a seemingly harmless guy who realizes his potential when he finds himself caught in the middle of a cross-dimensional battle between the warriors of Earth and the monsters of Outworld. Now, in order to stop the world from total destruction, he must win the martial arts tournament known as ‘Mortal Kombat’.

James Wan's next, THE CONJURING 2: THE ENDFIELD EXPERIMENT is set for a June 10, 2016 release.

Meh

Why change the mythology? It works on film, Paul Anderson proved this with the first and awesome MK film.

If Marvel has proven anything recently is treat your source material with respect and the fans will respond.

Seemingly harmless guy? Nobody in MK is seemingly harmless beside Cage, who is less "seemingly harmless" and more "action megastar".
Already concerned.

If it departs from the mythology then its not MK. They can keep both elements at play (pun intended). And this whole "seemingly harmless guy" angle sounds a like a lot like Johnny Cage or Liu Kang.

I've been a fan of Mortal Kombat for 20 years now. Sign me up. James Wan is perfect for this.

Something about the synopsis makes me think they don't want to focus on characters from the game series and want someone new. Unless they are thinking of Johnny Cage. They seriously need a good director for this that has compassion for this game series and not some first time D-Bag.

Was thinking that myself, but so far this site is the only one I've found that lists this new name, leading me to think the author just made a mistake.
