Jamie Foxx officially joins The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and dishes a bit on Electro's origin

After rumored talks, crossed fingers, and less-than-obtuse comments from director Marc Webb on the matter, Jamie Foxx has seemingly officially joined production on the Sony sequel THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2.  Listed without fanfare in the press release touting how Dane DeHaan had been chosen to play Harry Osborn, Foxx's name came without any listed connection to any one character.  That being said, all signs currently point to the man taking on lead villain duties via the part of Electro, and Foxx recently dished a comment or two that revealed a bit about the current-channeling character's place in the whole Spidey scheme of things.  Nothing game-breaking, but fun to know nonetheless:

“Electro is a great character. I met with the director, Mark Webb, I met with Andrew Garfield, and we talked… I think Electro will be an exciting character to play because he’s a… genius electrician-type person, and he gets the short end of the stick from the whole world, and the next thing you know he turns it on.”

One thing I'm definitely looking forward to seeing, as I for one enjoyed the first movie in this rebooted franchise, is how Electro's origin is incorporated into the Peter Parker origin saga and his connection to the rest of the characters.  It'd of course be more powerful if he were driven by something beyond "I'm grumpy that everyone treats me like shit so I'm going to get back at them," but what that something is remains to be seen.  Nor have we had the chance to watch Foxx play the main villain of anything, so tha is also something worth looking forward to.

But are you digging Foxx's official casting in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2? And if you weren't a fan of the first movie, does it make you more or less likely to give the sequel a go?

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 stars Foxx alongside a returning cast of Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Sally Fields, Dane DeHaan, and Shailene Woodley.  The movie opens May 2nd, 2014.

I don't really care who plays Electro as long as they make him look more like the comics version and less like the MTV version.

Nick Fury?

OK, so I get that comics are pretty much able to do what they want when it comes to racially changing their characters, and I really don't have a problem with it. Afterall, I remember the HUGE uproar when they rebooted the character of Nick Fury and turned him from an old white guy to Sam Jackson. No biggie, and everyone seems to like it. My question/thing here is: wasn't Electro always a white guy? A scrawny, psycho, white guy? I remember when Damon Wayans was ALMOST cast as Robin years ago

Again, I don't necessarily have a problem with Jamie Foxx being redone in a white guys role. I just find it weird that no one else has pointed it out....

For my own cinematic enjoyment I'll try to stay optimistic on this casting, but I can't help but get a 'seemed like a good idea at the time' feeling, like casting Jim Carrey as the riddler in Batman Forever. Admittedly Fox isn't my favorite actor, but I can appreciate talent when I see it, and he has it. But untill I see any footage, I have a hard time time buying him as a genius scientist/electrical engineer. I just hope he's given some rich motives to hate Spider-man to work off of.

The first one had a lot of potential, but it just seemed to play it too safe and even though I thought it was well done, ended up being boring at times because it was playing out the same things we've seen before. I hope they grow some balls with the sequels and do something different, but Electro was never an interesting villain to me. Always seemed like the villain playing a tough henchmen to the bigger bad guy, but casting such a big name in the role makes me think there won't be anyone

So we'll see, maybe they can pull off a good take on him.

And in regards to the tidbit, I just hope they get to a 4th movie in the series without rebooting it again.

I really enjoyed the first film, ridiculous things like hitting the goal post and not one person saying anything about it bending and all. Jamie should do really well as with DeHaan and Woodley, now bring on some pictures of the full cast within the next few months

The Amazing Spiderman was absolutely terrible. Jamie Foxx is the only reason I would even give the sequel a chance.

Cool

I can dig. I think it's cool casting, makes me very curious to see how the character is portrayed and what he will look like. I like that Harry is in it and LOVE that casting as well. (So what if they're re-using characters, that's like complaining about Nolan using commissioner Gordon and Alfred since they were used previously. They're essential to the story, and curious how all of this ties into Gwen's fate. ) I doubt Foxx wears the mask.

This is good news for sure, as I was waiting for Electro to make an appearance. I still feel the reboot was a bad idea, it was parker in high school again, and now we have to go over green goblin and harry all over again. I wish they had continued with new people like the Batmans, or Bonds instead of going over all this again. At least they havent reused the villains yet, but think about it, when Green Goblin comes back we will have like 3 movies with him as the villain, this is like X-men and

I think electro will probably be a hired heavy that will be there to put peter parker to the test to see what he is truly capable of. At the same time, Peter Parker and Harry Osborn will look into the past decisions of Oscorp's former CEO Norman Osborn to determine just how much oscorp technology has filtered into criminal hands. Likely by the end spiderman will learn of the existence of the kingpin who personally arranged the murders of his mother and father. This will setup a third movie with

Likely by the end spiderman will learn of the existence of the kingpin who personally arranged the murders of his mother and father. This will setup a third movie with spider man fighting several bad guys in hopes of finally getting close enough to take his revenge on the kingpin for killing his parents. Well at least that's my theory on this thus far.

Would be nice, but Fox has the rights to Kingpin since they still have the Daredevil rights.

Kraven!

I like Fox. I think he's going to do well in this role, despite the terrible casting for everyone else (just my opinion). I still think Kraven's Last Hunt is a great story line and would have made an amazing movie, but I guess since Spider-man 3 had a villain posing as Spider-man, it might be too soon to try that again.

now that would be something to see! I was thinking the same thing, i didnt much care about amazing spiderman, as it really didnt add anything new to spiderman - besides a muddled mystery about his parents - that wasnt even solved in the first film. i think kraven's story would have really made an impact. that being said, i hope electro is good, as he is one of my faves.

The saving grace of this movie!

I hated the first one for its obsessive need to have Peter be a pansy and cry every 10 minutes. I was pissed when they casted the stupid temper tantrum kid from Chronicle too. But Jamie Foxx is such a huge deal I really hope he can keep this movie afloat. It will never live up to Spiderman 2 but Foxx as Electro will probably be a better villain than Lizard.

Surely you can't be serious!? You think Andrew Garfield cried every ten minutes? Did you watch the same film? I only remember a full on cry scene once, when his Uncle died. How many times did Tobey Maguire full on WEEP during the original trilogy? Simply from conversations with Mary Jane and Aunt May.. the tears would POUR like a waterfall. GIve me a break, out of all the negatives you could find, that surely is not one of them. And if it is for you, you must have seriously despised the

Cause I did, for that same exact reason.

But yes, Jamie Foxx is exciting. Agreed.

I'll admit the first movie had its share of problems. But i still liked it a lot. To me it ranks about the first Sam Raimi movie but not higher than Spiderman 2.

so this movie looks to be building a strong cast and could be even better than Webbs last turn. Maybe this time the studio will be more lenient with him and the property.

I'm glad to see Jamie Foxx in the movie. However, the rule of superhero sequels is also one or more villain. So, it's Electro and I guess there'd be a second villain - I opt for The Vulture.

Not so, the first Spiderman movies of both series have had one villain, "Batman", "Captain America", "Superman" and "Iron Man" each had one villain (plus minions). When a superhero movie starts to add up the number of villains, we start to see the structure of the film crumble ("Xmen 3", "Spiderman 3", "Daredevil", "Batman and Robin")

a good rule to go by would be 2 villains, one main and one side. Like how was done in "Batman Returns" "Dark Knight", "Green Lantern". Any more and the film
