Jamie Foxx says no to green and yellow for his Electro costume in The Amazing Spider-Man sequel

Dec. 17, 2012by: Paul Shirey

Love it or hate it, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 is coming our way, this time with a host of new characters, from Shailene Woodley as Mary Jane Watson, Dane DeHaan as Harry Osborn, and Oscar winner Jamie Foxx as the classic villain Electro. Foxx has been exceptionally enthusiastic about the role and being a part of Spider-Man's, ahem, web, although his casting does come as a bit of a surprise.  I don't think it's so much about race as it is about character.  Foxx has got a very strong screen presence and feels much better suited to a bigger and better villain role instead of the squirrely second-tier Electro.

In keeping with director Marc Webb's approach, which is a bit of a modernization/update, rather than a straight adaptation, Foxx commented to Blackfilm about Electro's costume, saying:

"It won’t be green and yellow. It will be a different color. They (the producers) want something for the future. They want to have it more grounded and not as comic bookie, so it won’t be green and yellow. They want to try new things, like a liquid rubber and things like that, and there are all these bolts and stuff in my arms when they are hanging me upside down and trying to figure out what happen. How did he become this way? So, it will be some new stuff.

In the script, this villain is the first time it’s be written really, really well. Andrew Garfield and Marc Webb both commented on how great the script is, so it should be an exciting time"

It's hard to get upset over Foxx not having the blooming-flower-of-electricity mask in traditional colors for the character since it is rather ridiculous, but at the same time it always bothers me when they don't even try.  Remember those screentests for the original Green Goblin mask in the first Spider-Man?  Yeah, I would've taken that over the Power Rangers suit any day of the week.

I saw THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN in theaters and it just didn't do it for me.  I know that many loved it and that's just fine, but for me it was just too damn redundant and uninspired.  I'm willing to give the sequel a shot, though, as I thought that Andrew Garfield was great and Emma Stone was just lovely.  I think that Foxx as Electro is kind of a waste of a villain and a great actor, but that's just me (or is it?).  Shailene Woodley and Dane DeHaan are inspired casting for their respective roles as well, so that gives me some hope that the sequel will be better than the yawn-inducing first entry.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 is swinging to theaters on May 2, 2014.

Extra Tidbit: What villain would you rather have seen Foxx play? Personally, I'd rather have him play Kraven the Hunter or Scorpion. Or Rhino. Or Tombstone. Or...okay, pretty much anyone other than Electro.

I just hope he's actually "villainous". I'm starting to get tired of misunderstood villains in comic book movies (especially in the Spider-Man films) who are redeemed at the end of the movie because they were really never evil at all. They were just possessed or the victim of a bad experiment or something. Let's see a badass Electro who is really evil and revels in it.

I enjoyed Spiderman

I really liked the Amazing Spider-Man. Yes, there was some rehashing, which was necessary but even the stuff that they "repeated" didn't feel like it was being repeated because hey did it in their own way. I understand that some don't like it and I am fine with that all that being said, I am super excited for the sequel. Now it can really be it's own thing and hopefully won't be in the shadow of the original trilogy. If they are going with Electro then I am glad that they are changing up

So the Electro in the film won't look like anything like the Electro in the comic books? Yep, sounds about right. It's like those old Hulk TV movies all over again. "Look, it's Daredevil! Only he doesn't look like Daredevil! Awesome!"

Tron?

Not sure why, but I think Electro will have a very Tron-esque costume in this film. Imagine an amped-up Tron suit with the signature "electric linings" and a helmet to boot. If done right, it could look pretty badass.

Well I was excited for this sequel, but I should have known they'd find a way to fuck it up. "Let's make a Spider-Man movie, but let's change EVERYTHING! Fans love that!" Go suck a rock, Mr. Foxx. Better work on your grammar too.

Not something as a fan and consumer i want to hear.

Given what he is paid, and the crap he has been in, he should have no opinion.

This doesn't make any sense to me. I think Foxx is a really good actor, but he has a persona and a screen presence that in no way jibes with this character as presented in the Marvel universe. You could have him play an electricity-powered villain named Electro, but I don't think it will be the one we have all known and hoped to see on screen for years.

Maybe he will get a chance to "kill all of the white people" in the movie as he said he so enjoyed about Django.

Who cares...

I thought the first movie was awful, it was full of plot holes and Spider-Man was not likeable as a teen or the spider, then there was all of the answered questions from the trailer about his origin and his parents. I think this a another terrible idea for a horrible movie franchise. I will admit I am a fan of the first Tobey films (the first two, that is.) so I Will just ignore this till sony does the honorable thing and let the rights go back to marvel.

Jamie Foxx... whatever. I'm sure he'll be good in Django Unchained though. What I would really love for a Spider-Man villain is Kraven The Hunter, and I want him to be played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Boo-yah.

I'm willing to give this a chance. However, if I don't like what I see, all I'll be able to think about the entire film is how much better the villain would have looked if Raimi directed, like how I felt about the Lizard.

As far as the costume goes...

As long as it doesn't have the stupid star-shaped face mask thing, I'm good with it. In fact, I don't think he should have any kind of fancy costume at all.

Very misleading title for this article. You guys made it sound like it was Jamie Foxx's decision. Did you guys even read Foxx's comments that you pasted in your own article? And apparently a lot of schmoes down below didn't read it as well. As for the costume, I could care less, like the first comment stated I just want to see a true villain.

The Chameleon

Was always my favorite Spider-Man gimmick villain. Nicely subdued looking suit, power fits his profession perfectly. Why he was never used is a mystery to me.

Costumes will always be altered in comic films, began with the X-Men and will continue on for all other films, as long as Jamie brings his A game to the role then I'm ok with it not being a bright yellow and green.

I dont mind costume tweaks for movies. I hope Electro is more of a set up for a bigger threat to Spidey. Everyone knows that at some point Spidey will just throw him in water and he will be done. I would like to see Kraven the Hunter or even the Sinister Six. Morbieus would be pretty cool also, J Michael Stracinzky did some great stuff with that character and Spidey a few years back.

I actually liked Spiderman 3

What didn't work in Spiderman 3 was the resolution of the Peter / Harry problem. Harry's butler told Harry that his father "dies by his own hand". Well, gee, why didn't his butler tell him that back in Spiderman 2? Or better yet, Peter says "I didn't kill your father" and Harry believes him and goes away to think about it and that's it until the end when Harry decides to help Peter. The whole bit about Peter becoming evil because he was being controlled by the symbiote and almost killing

The whole bit about Peter becoming evil because he was being controlled by the symbiote and almost killing Harry... that was too much. They should have cut out most of that storyline and focused on Sandman and Venom. Oh and Harry didn't have to die at the end either.

So its not Electro.

Why cant they just do a darker green suit, with yellow electiricty flowing around it and around his head. I think most fans would be ok with that. Changing him totally makes him NOT electro. Its like some guy who is similar. Even spiderman - they changed his suit - some love it, some hate it, but when you see him, you can tell its spiderman. if they made spidey green and purple, he wouldnt be spiderman. Same goes with electro. I was excited, but now i done.

ok...

Not so sure Foxx is the right guy for this movie...Anyway, I heard that Webb is going to give Spiderman bigger eyes, like Mcfarlane eyes! I'm not excited about this; that part of him is for the comic books and not movie adaptation material. Romita Spiderman eyes are always the best to me, they scream Spiderman. I thought the new eyes could remove a bit of that yellow gold look and turn to black in the middle or even silver or white but please oh please don't give him the big eyes...Don't get me

Does anyone else agree with me? Oh and there were a few corny slow moments in The Amazing that messed with the flow of the movie but overall I wanted much much more Spiderman..and I loved the movie and the suit much better than the other, the colors really popped...but I am hoping that the next one will be better than the first. One thing I really like about the movie was how he felt much smaller than the other film when compared to the buildings, I felt scared when he peaked over the edge at points, New York felt more like well New York; It looked like a huge city but it also felt like we only got to see a very small part of it. The movie did feel a little more drama orientated or indie filmish than I would have liked, really it felt like 2 movies were mashed together to try to form one movie. I just really love Spiderman and again am Hoping that the next one will really do what the first one couldn't.

oh and....

oh and btw, does anyone else feel like this movie is smaller than it should be...for some reason I keep getting the feeling that not a lot of marketing and or hype leading up to the movies opening was there. It just felt like " oh another subpar spiderman movie" . I don't think its just me either. Maybe they should market the movie better or something and make it seem like the next BIG THING! IDK peace

ummm...

I don't understand why Hollywood has to "re-vamp" or change things. Spider mans costume is a bit corny, but it works, because spider man is a bit corny. I can understand wanting to make the suit a bit better or cooler or like J-man said in a comment earlier. But this makes me already not interested in seeing a movie that I kind of wasn't interested in seeing the first place. Btw, Electro is my all time favorite villain, hopefully it turns out good. *fingers crossed*

Spidershit

The first one was a teenage wast of time. More jokes than action. And now this .. Another bat choice in the franchise.
