Jared Leto dances around the rumor he will play the Joker in Suicide Squad

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Just a few weeks ago, the intriguing rumor that Jared Leto was being sought to play Joker in David Ayer‘s SUICIDE SQUAD began making the rounds online. Some loved it, others hated it, but no one could deny it would make for an interesting choice. Still, nothing has been confirmed for the DC Comics film. Names like Margot Robbie, Will Smith, Tom Hardy, and more still hover around the casting circles, but Leto’s name is still the biggest one.

In a recent interview with MTV, Leto was asked about the Joker casting rumor and the Oscar winner related it back to a popular 1999 film he co-starred in to make his point.

“You know there’s a film called Fight Club, my friends, and you know what the first rule is, don’t you? Nuff said.”

While neither a confirmation nor a denial, it has usually indicated there is some truth to the rumor when the actor doesn’t shut it down off the bat. Leto went on to say he is weighing his options and reading several scripts, including SUICIDE SQUAD, and toying with the idea of going back to work with his band 30 Seconds To Mars.

“There was this little event called the Oscars that basically changed my life. I’m not really in a hurry to jump into another film unless it’s something I can’t say no to. I want to make sure it’s special.”

Jared Leto was long linked to DOCTOR STRANGE which has gone on to be offered to Joaquin Phoenix and, most recently, Benedict Cumberbatch. The role of Joker is an iconic one and would not only require someone who can follow in the footsteps of the late Heath Ledger but someone who can make it their own. Jared Leto could be that guy.

SUICIDE SQUAD hits theaters August 5, 2016.
