Jason Blum on why horror movies get no love from the Academy Awards

Last Updated on April 2, 2024

I’m just going to come right out and say that I think Jordan Peele’s GET OUT is a new masterpiece. I think the movie is damn-near perfect and is a perfect slice of timely horror for our day and age. I’m sure you agree, at least somewhat.

That said, do you expect Jordan Peele to get an Oscar nomination for Best Director this year?

How about Best Screenplay? What do you think are the odds are actors Daniel Kaluuya, Allison Williams, Catherine Keener, Bradley Whitford, Caleb Landry Jones, or the phenomenal Betty Gabriel get any acting nods between the lot of them?

And why not?

Because the Oscars look down on the horror genre. Plain and simple. Sure a few flicks sneak into the top categories here and there, like SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, THE EXORCIST, JAWSPSYCHO, ROSEMARY’S BABY, CARRIE, THE SIXTH SENSE and BLACK SWAN. But those are super rare.

Anyhow, all ranting aside, Jason Blum was recently asked by Screen Rant (natch) why he thinks the Academy doesn’t tend to reward horror films with even nominations for some of its top honors.

Jason Blum on Horror and the Oscars:

You know what, I don’t know because I was going to say because people tend to shy away from the violence, but the truth is there are super violent movies that are nominated for Academy Awards, they’re just rarely horror films or they haven’t been horror films in a long time. Maybe they think they’re gross or something. I don’t know, that’s a good question. I don’t know.

I’m going to wrap this up by asking you why do YOU think the Oscars turn a blind eye towards horror? Let us know what you think in the comments below or on Facebook, Twitter, and/or Instagram!
