Jason Momoa cast as Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy?

Feb. 15, 2013by: Alex Maidy

Much like the announcement that Chris Pratt had landed the lead in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, news of Jason Momoa getting the supporting role of Drax the Destroyer came out of nowhere. That is not to say this is not a great choice, because if this ends up being true, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY just got a little more badass.

Latino Review reported exclusively that Momoa was offered the role after delivering a screen test that blew away the producers who made an offer and are in negotiations as we speak. Prior to this news, the cast being considered included Isaiah Mustafa, Dave Bautista, and Brian Patrick.

Here is a little background on Drax:

Arthur Douglas was a human whose family was attacked and killed by the supervillain Thanos. Needing a champion to combat Thanos, the being known as Kronos took Arthur's spirit and placed it in a powerful new body, and Drax the Destroyer was born. Drax's powers included enhanced strength and resilience, flight, and the ability to project energy blasts from his hands. The character often battled Thanos, and on occasion the superheroes Captain Marvel and Adam Warlock.

Momoa is best known for starring in STARGATE: ATLANTIS, GAME OF THRONES, and the title role in the reboot of CONAN. He is an imposing presence and will need minimal physical alteration to play Drax aside from some make-up. Momoa is just recognizable enough that he will mesh well in the team and has the chance to explode in popularity if GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is done correctly.

Anyone else excited for this movie more now? GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY opens August 1, 2014.

When I first saw Jason Momoa in Game Of Thrones I thought he was wearing an elaborate body suit. Give him his own movie and call it "The Mighty Pectorals"

I like it. That's two Game of Thrones actors this week to receive roles in Marvel movies this week.

Great Casting

Now if they could get H. Jon Benjamin from Archer to voice Rocket Raccoon we'd be set...

Spot on casting! He has great presence and will bring much depth to his character Drax.

Really excited to hear who they cast for Rocket Racoon. Hopefully not Carrey or Sandler.

I don't mind Carey as a actor, you gotta remember, even if they do get Carrey, he can still do the role justice, he doesn't always try to do funny, I'm positive he can do serious, alter his voice a bit, can be done.

True, but I don't think he fits into the mold along with Pratt and Momoa. So far Pratt and Momoa have been great out of the box type casting. That's what I want the whole cast to be...not so mainstream. If you know what I mean. I would love to have Timothy Olyphant, Josh Holloway, Sam Rockwell, H. Jon Benjamin or Willem Dafoe voice Rocket Raccoon. They would bring much more depth than Carrey and they can all do drama AND comedy.

The problem with Carrey is that his voice and mannerisms are so identifiably "Jim Carrey" that it can take you out of the movie completely. I agree with the non-mainstream casting idea. Out of the box is the way to go. He's a great actor in the right role, but as a casting choice for this movie, the idea of Carrey seems too lazy and predictable.

I'm digging it so far!

First, they get Chris Pratt and now Momoa. I am liking how the casting is going so far.

Honestly this movie could either be a huge hit, or Marvel's first giant flop. I don't see the general movie-going audience buying a completely CGI movie about a raccoon, tree, aliens, and the occasional human. It just seems cheesy and, quite honestly, weird (or even lame). If they do this right and ground the story with a human character we can relate to, and rely on practical effects rather than CGI, and also provide a good story, then I'll eat my words. For now, I'm dubious. I'll wait for the

To each his own, I suppose. I'm guessing you come from a comic book background where you're very familiar with the characters. I don't. Unfortunately, my perspective is the perspective of the majority of movie-goers, and I just don't see the mainstream audience getting excited about this movie like they did with Iron Man, or Captain America, or obviously Avengers. We'll see.

don't discredit the "general movie-going audience"GotG is basically a sci-fi fantasy set in the world of super-heroes, so it has plenty of it's components have proven to work. i imagine Groot (the tree) being akin to the tree people from Lord of the Rings. You were able to connect with those guys. Movies like Ted makes think people can get with Rocket Raccoon as well. When you watch Ted, you get into the character and forget that he's a teddy bear.

Man, two spot on casting decisions! It looks like Marvel/Disney know they have a lot riding on this so they're trying to get the best people involved. As an actual fan of this series all I can say is so far so good.

good

I know there are haters out there, but after Game of Thrones and his willingness to basically totally alter his physique permanently, I think he's got potential to do good stuff. Whether or not that potential gets realized is another thing, but this is a step in the right direction.
