Jason Momoa is pumped for Justice League, talks Batman v Superman backlash

Jason Momoa Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Aquaman Justice League

While Warner Bros. was probably hoping that the reception towards BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE could have been a little more universally positive, there's still plenty more to come in their DC Universe for us to look forward to. One such film, and most likely the biggest, is the first installment of JUSTICE LEAGUE which will bring together all of the heroes teased in BATMAN V SUPERMAN, including Jason Momoa's Aquaman. The actor recently spoke with Entertainment Tonight and said that while he's aware of the backlash BATMAN V SUPERMAN has received, he's still very excited to begin working on JUSTICE LEAGUE.

Some people liked it, some people didn't, it is what it is. I don't get it, but I don't really listen to what anyone says...You can't win 'em all. And I had a ball. I loved it. There's a lot of support from fans. There's a big beautiful world. There's a lot -- a lot -- of stuff. I feel really privileged to know that there's a lot of big, beautiful stuff that's going to happen. I'm excited too, for people to see the final product. And now it's our turn -- it's Justice League time! I've been waiting for four years that I've known about it that I've had to keep my mouth shut. I'm super pumped to shoot it!

Obviously Jason Momoa couldn't say much about the film, but he did say that he was looking forward to the super-heroic fisticuffs as "I like fighting. So, I'm looking forward to being a superhero and just fighting, there's some good battles." Once Jason Momoa completes work on JUSTICE LEAGUE - PART ONE, he'll soon be returning to the DC Universe with the AQUAMAN solo-film to be directed by James Wan (FURIOUS 7). "It's just something that hasn't been explored before," said Momoa of the AQUAMAN film. "For me, it's like Iron Man. When Iron Man came out, it was like, 'Wow!' We haven't explored that character before and Robert Downey took it to a whole nother level. He's genius and it was amazing. I loved it." It was confirmed not that long ago that Amber Heard would be playing Mera in the film and Jason Momoa said that he's "super stoked" to work with her. Shocker.

JUSTICE LEAGUE - PART ONE will be released on November 17, 2017 and AQUAMAN will hit theaters on July 27, 2018.

Reading the comments makes one thing clear, the people who apparently love BvS are stuck in this DC vs Marvel mindset. These are not movies to you guys, it's a sporting event. Which is a shame, cause it's the true fans who value quality that lose in the end.

This new DC Universe needs to be scrapped, and it'll happen, but not soon enough. The more people that support this bastardization, the longer this awful circus will continue. DC is being drug through the mud by WB & Snyder, and I

Nonsense. Those who hate BVS give the same old tired reasons. It's too damn dark. I hate Snyder, waah. Etc. I loved BVS, MOS, I don't care, I love the dark tone, the visual style... here's a shocker... I love Marvel as well... in fact, the sporting event attitude seems to come from the Marvel fanboys. And that's okay, for myself, as an all around comic fan who loved BVS, you can have your opinion, I'll have mine.

It will be interesting to see...

if the Marvel strategy - in reverse - can work. Doing the "stand alones" after the ensemble. It could work. But I guess it will depend on the success of the Justice League.
Most people seem to have been okay with WW's performance in BvS, so I suppose the stand alone Wonder Woman will be the first test. Again, I'm going to keep an open mind. Marvel is now trying the reverse too, in a way, by releasing Black Panther after Civil War.
Really, there's probably no foolproof formula, is there?

BVS was great!

I like Mamoa for this casting, but I'm not wild about the character design. He looks like the same character he's played in just about every movie he's been in.

They should have done something a bit closer to the traditional costume like they did with Superman and Batman. And I think I would have preferred short hair, perhaps lightly bleached in the same way that surfer hair gets bleached from the salt water.

I'm done with DC movies. Didn't like Man of Steel, BvS was even worse, I can't see anyone giving this a third chance. I feel sorry for Momoa, he keeps getting stuck with these hack filmmakers.

@No Good Names Left, well yea! Marvel does have a winning track record. Not saying every movie they've put out has been great. But they've all been successful. And they haven't experiences audience drop-offs like BvS. And pretty much every movie they've put out has warranted a sequel as well as received favourable reviews. So yea, definitely a winning track record.

Rushing It

Let's be honest, DC and Warner Bros. are rushing into this situation and it is going to do nothing but continue to hurt their films. Marvel gave them the blueprint by slowly building up to "The Avengers" with solo films that left fans salivating for a "team up film". Instead of doing the same (which would have worked) we are getting a rush job with "Justice League" coming after only 3 solo films, this is going to hurt the flow of the story for non-comic book fans who will have no idea about

Instead of doing the same (which would have worked) we are getting a rush job with "Justice League" coming after only 3 solo films, this is going to hurt the flow of the story for non-comic book fans who will have no idea about many of the back stories unless JL is 4 hours long. I'm also pretty sure WB wishes they could replace Zack Snyder after the poor word of mouth on MOS and BvS with both fans and critics. I thought both were OK but we're so serious and "dark" (the Nolan Effect) that any scene that wasn't an action set piece was fairly boring. I'm rooting for this to workout because I love these characters but I do not understand why WB and DC felt the need to rush this universe so quickly and it is going to hurt the box office and enjoyment for a film in Justice League that could be one of the most anticipated comic book films of all time.

i strongly disagree. DC isn't "rushing it".

it is possible to jump right into the team with a single movie. just look at GotG. hell, just look at any movie with an ensemble cast. you don't have to know everyone's backstory in detail the first time around. you just need good characters. then people will salivate for the the solo films as sequels/prequels to learn the backstory (e.g. all the new Ep. VII characters).

the Justice League movie basically just needs to be The Breakfast Club

the Justice League movie basically just needs to be The Breakfast Club (with Superheroes) where every member sticks to their archetype. people will get it and accept it.

the problem with BvS was that Superman was out of character - you basically had two dark, angsty Batmans. what Marvel (and Deadpool) did right was that everyone sticks to their archetype and plays off each other.

it's too late for DC to follow the Marvel strategy. Marvel can't even follow the "marvel strategy" anymore. that worked back in 2008 - 2012, but it's a different world now. today you need AT LEAST 2 heroes in a movie unless you're doing a unique genre-shift (like a GotG or Dr. Strange - two different sub-universes of the MCU) Marvel hasn't done a single hero in a movie since Thor 2 (and even that had Loki as a hero).

i say DC's overall release strategy is fine, they're just messing up the execution.

what if DC did follow the Marvel formula...here is how the schedule would go:
2014 - Man of Steel
2016 - Batman solo movie
2017 - Wonder Woman solo Movie
2018 - Man of Steel 2
2019 - Aquaman
2020 - Cyborg
2021 - Flash
2022 - Green Lantern Corp
2023 - Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
2024 - justice League pt. 1
End of Phase 1
2025 - Wonder woman 2
2026 - Batman 2
2027 - Aquaman 2
2028 - Flash 2
2029 - Green Arrow
2030 - Justice League pt. 2
End of Phase 2

There you go....we could wait another 8 years for Justice League pt. 1 and 14 years for JL pt. 2. Along the way, people started hating the movies because they said they are copying Marvel, and by the time Justice League 1 came out....the fan base died of old age.

Marvel may have DC on Quantity, but DC has been doing it since 1979 on Superman. They just started to finally put their characters in an extended universe.

If you look at James Bond, the films started in 1962. They were great films that built up a following. He was thrust in a new adventure in each film. In 2006, they started to do James bond Pre-quels and giving an origin story. We are in a trend in film that seems Hollywood needs to give an origin to everything to build franchises. (e.g. Leatherface, Hannibal Lechter, Darth Vader, Michael Myers, Dumb and Dumber, the Exorcist, Peter Pan, Snow white and 7 dwarfs, etc.)

As a comic book DC reader, i loved being thrust in the DC universe. Batman is a serious character. He is dark and a vigilante. if he starts doing too many jokes, you start getting Val Kilmer and George Clooney wearing the outfit. Then it becomes a joke. Superman 2 was a great film. I heard that Richard Donner was replaced by Richard Lester to direct because the producers wanted more jokes and funny parts in the film. So all the slap stick was thrown in there. I loved Superman 2, but it could have been better without the extra added comedy. As a fan of both characters, I just wanted to see Superman kick ass against another alien threat who is a challenge, see Batman throw down in an action scene compared to the comics from a distance and not have so many close up scenes where it is too busy. It was cool to see him use his martial arts, bat detonators, cables, bat knives, etc. That and to finally see the triad of super heroes all on one screen. Since 1979, we have had 6 Superman films and 7 Batman films. I think it is about time we start to see a team up come into play. Though it may not have been a perfect film, I don't think any film is.

@Rubox, I couldn't agree more with your post. Going the Marvel route would have been too damn long, and audience will eventually get burnt out on superhero films. That's inevitable, so WB is right in pushing forward with Justice League fast. Backstory is not necessary for 2 of the most recognizable superheroes in the world. Marvel films aren't perfect. Far from it.

@rubox

Not all of the Avengers have franchises attached to them and nobody thinks WB should follow Marvel step-by-step to properly "follow their formula". They could just have made a solo film for each of the big 3, release the Justice League film in 2018 and everyone would have been happy.

The aspect of the MCU that's been the most often criticized is when they spent too much time in a film setting up another film and that's exactly what BvS is guilty of.

Marvel at least has the excuse of being the first to try a connected universe and having no blueprint to follow. WB cannot say that.

I've always really liked him....

He's been good in everything he's done (a little too one-note, but it's what the characters called for). He also seems like a genuinely cool guy who doesn't try too hard. I'm glad he's getting a chance to be in something huge and I hope he just kills it. I could see his movies being so good that you want to keep going back for sequels (plus the JL stuff), so I hope it works out.

Good to see the enthusiasm. Too many stars act like they're doing us a favor by playing the role.

who exactly acts like they're doing us a favor by playing the role? if there's one thing i noticed about superhero roles is that actors are always enthusiastic offscreen to play them.

EDIT: excluding Jennifer Lawrence. i could see that, but who actually likes her for Mystique anyways? all of the major players in the Marvel and DC camps seem to love what they're doing.

Bring on the downvotes but I'm so sick of hearing everyone at the DC camp say "There's a lot coming.... just wait." Really? They all said that after the 2nd BvS trailer gave everything away. Then that proved to be false. Sorry but you only get credit for what you've proven, not what's going to happen "eventually." I'm not anti DC but I'm annoyed by how often they bank on this "just wait til next time... you'll see" mentality. Let your slate of films speak for itself.

Really excited to see what Wan brings to the world of Aquaman and the dent and impact it leaves on the rest of the DCU. Can't wait to see what type of atmospheric setting his ocean environment is going to look like and the action scenes in the ocean and out of it. I mean, it would be cool if the underwater scenes had a horror element or atmosphere to them since he's known for his well crafted horror scenes and scares.
