Jason Momoa sidesteps Aquaman questions; says he wants to play an anti-hero

Jul. 2, 2014by:

Although it hasn't been confirmed, Jason Momoa will likely be playing Aquaman in BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, which means the actor has had to deal with interviews like this one. Over the weekend at the Evolution Expo, Momoa was asked how he would feel about playing a superhero, and the actor said he'd rather play an anti-hero.

I think it would be really, really fun to play a superhero. You know? I’ve always talked about, like, what’s your favorite. I mean I love Lobo so… but ah… You know. It would be awesome. I don’t know how they do it but… Yea, absolutely I think it would…I just don’t really see myself as a superhero. Yeah, no I mean, they’re kind of written a little different. I don’t know. I just… you know. I’m not wearing a lot of the…I don’t see myself in tights a lot. And ah…I’m more of a, I don’t know, an anti-hero if you will. In life. So, not the smiling, parading to saving the world kind of guy. Yeah, the Hulk would have been fun!

Aquaman has been portrayed as an anti-hero in many DC comics, and especially in the more recent ones. While Jason Momoa would make a great Lobo, I do think he might be trying to throw us off a bit with his comment on the character. Do you think Jason Momoa will be playing Aquaman in BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, and how do you feel about him being an anti-hero in Zack Snyder's new movie?

BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE is scheduled to hit theaters on May 6, 2016.

The go to character trope for people who don't know how to write is the angsty anti-hero. Ask any angsty 13 year old kid to create a superhero, and you'll end up exactly what Snyder did with Superman. Snyder is exactly that 13 year old kid who thinks everything is better with an abundance of angsty bullshit.

No,everything is better with realistic character progression based on life events and the psychology of the characters reacting to those life events. Not cartoony bullshit. That's what makes a great character. That's what comics are. Go watch The Incredibles or some shit if you want wholesome, untainted super heroes

@ PsychoMaestro, not everyone shares your gloomy worldview. And The Incredibles has plenty of psychology, mixed with a dose of satire, which maybe you didn't quite get. Some people like their super-heroes to be fun as well as complex.

"Snyder is exactly that 13 year old kid who thinks everything is better with an abundance of angsty bullshit."

Utter nonsense. He took a realistic, unsanitized approach to Superman. Sorry, but two demigods fighting in a crowded city would yield lots of damage. Avengers gets a free pass for doing the same thing, but in a lighter tone?

Avengers gets a free pass because the "heroes" in that movie behaved the part.

@PsychoMaestro

But Clark had no progression of his character, let alone anything resembling realism. But you don't get what constitutes good characters or what makes a good story. You think Angst = Deep Psychology? Give me a break. That kind of angst is for clueless teenagers and Twilight. Make no mistake about it, Man of Steel did follow Twilight rules. Compensate for lack of story & zero character development by upping fanfare and making that shit angsty as hell.

Winter Soldier got it right. It did exactly what Snyder said couldn't be done. Winter Soldier embraced the fact that Captain America is a boy scout good-two-shoes. And the film put him into a world that didn't want a boy scout. Snyder said that the boy scout persona is too boring, and you can't have that kind of character in today's times. Well the Russo brothers proved him wrong on every level. They didn't try to make Captain America into an angsty emotional wreck to appease what's trending. They embraced what kept that character an icon for generations.

It makes sense and would be awesome to see. Synder did a great job of making superman a hero and humanizing him at the sane time. Hopefully he can give aquaman the sane level of complexity as well.

Aquaman as an Eco terrorist?

That sounds badass. It would be nice to discover he's be the one blowing up offshore oil refineries this entire time.

Zack Snyder made Superman an anti-hero, so I have no doubt that he is going to make every character in the Justice League an anti-hero. Cause anti-heroes are so cool that everyone should be one!

I hate side-stepping. This might be sticking a little more than usual because I'm also not a fan of this choice.
